Mark pope is figuring out how to get the most out of Brandon Garrison

Yep, I posted earlier in another thread that Garrison has been much better than I expected. I even mentioned to my son that he was a weak spot as the back-up center. But I've changed my tune on him. He's still learning, of course, but he plays with energy and is a smart offensive player. He's around the ball, he's cutting to the basket, he's making plays for others. And he has a good looking shot, just needs confidence. He's got range out to the 3, which he nearly showed against Duke (just had a toe on the line).

Garrison will be fun to watch grow this year for sure. It will be interesting to also see Chandler get his legs and abilities back full strength and his development. The 2 of those guys might be the difference in the outcome of several games this year. The older guys we know what we get with them for the most part. They can still evolve their game but not be tons. Garrison and Chandler could be huge.

I keep thinking Chandler is going to go in for a monster reverse dunk. :)

Garrison is special.

When we took him, everyone made it sound like was a massive project with elite potential but who barely knew how to tie his shoes.

He still has much room to improve, but hes so much better than we were all told.

I firmly believe if he was being coached by John Calipari, he would dribble off his foot every other possession, be a turnover machine and would be unplayable. We got so used to saying that with even five star recruits but pope is indeed figuring out how to use him.

I felt like he was the weakest link in our 10 man rotation prior to the Duke game. Made me nervous - always expecting him to over dribble, make a bad pass, take an ill-advised shot.

He didn’t exactly do a 180 vs. Duke. Still made some silly mistakes. But he probably did a 135 at least. I don’t think we win that game without his second half hustle.

I would have to call Chandler the weakest link among the top 10 at this point, but I don’t even feel bad about that. Still believe that’s mostly rust, and will largely sort itself out by conference play.

End of the day, this team has a ton of potential when Garrison, Almonor, Chandler are 8-10. Then 11-12 could come in and not even really hurt you on offense.

Garrison is a monster talent. His athleticism for his size is elite. I have a feeling he is going to be a huge, game changing, asset by the end of the season.

He also has that "readiness" during live ball action. The speed with which the game can come at you at the elite D1 level is hard to describe and during the Duke game he kept finding himself in the right spots (thanks to proper coaching and his natural God given abilities). Guys Cals recruited in the last few years like Montgomery, Ugonna etc would fumble them passes out of bounds or get bodied and lose it on the way up. That free throw form and 2-on-the-line-3-pointer tell me it's only a matter of time.

Really need him and Otega back next year as the veterans of the team to anchor us with their already sky high potential.

As soon as he starts shooting the 3 with confidence this team becomes a totally different animal. He can and will develop that shot.
Brandon Garrison or any other big man, especially one with the ability to play away from the basket & shoot the 3 would be crazy not to want to play for Mark Pope. That's the reason that I believe that Big Z made such a terrible mistake when he left here. Big Z would have been the talk of college basketball if he was still here.
