Mark Pope "Coming In Hot" on UGA Transfer (Travis Graf)

Some of these names are concerning to me. We're definitely not winning bidding wars with the likes of sju, byu, duke, etc. Then you have teams like Florida and bama who employ the same moneyball type approach and are doing it better.

Roster building is just going to be tough sledding at UK unless the nil situation gets fixed.
Further explanation?
I understand that message boards are for " entertainment purposes only" but a month from now we'll have factual information to break down.
I still say when all the portal classes are complete ours will rank among the best.

How do you know we didn’t outbid anyone for Williams ? You don’t.

We're not outbidding the big nil players. Idk any simpler way to put it. We literally do not have access to the same amount of money.

Our nil is solid but there are several that are much better. I didn't realize this would be a point of contention.

Imo its going to be tough for the reasons i mentioned before. We're not the only moneyball team and we're not able to outbid the big dawgs.

The system and brand will help but we're not even the only big program that features playmaking bigs. Bama and Florida do too, and there will be more as people implement more zoom concepts in their offense.

Can you provide a list of how much NIL money each team has at their disposal?

Or is it your contention that certain teams are drawing from a pool that will always be just a little more than ours, no matter what?

I don't think we lost Dent due to NIL.
I think he was an LA kid who wanted to play at home for UCLA.
If you just go by money in the athletic program then Ohio St and Georgia should clean up but I don't see either becoming basketball powers.
Pope is going to get a higher % cut of revenue sharing and our NIL is more basketball centric than thee big football powers.
This should balance things where UK basketball is able to compete and UK is going to win out when the NIL offers is a wash because kids would still rather play here.

When the billionaire benefactor for sju tells pitino that costs are covered for whatever he needs, thats your proof.

When byu signs the top recruit in the nation because of endless Mormon money, thats your proof.

Whenever osu, psu, and notre dame spent tens of millions on football while hiring coordinators away from one another for 3 mil/year, thats your proof.

When chicken king writes the checks, when sac state has a strong nil fund, on and on.

Again we're not scraping by, but we have one major donor thats covering football and basketball. Thats nil, coaching salaries, etc. We just don't have the money to buy whomever we want. Its really that simple.

Did people really not realize this? Sport specific revenue sharing will be the only thing in basketball that will help us close that gap. In football it wont even help that much because we have a smaller stadium. Thats IF Mitch even goes to sport specific revenue sharing rather than it going into a pool shared by all.

I guess I simultaneously believe that we don’t have the money to buy everyone we want (I suspect that no one will), but that we are also in a good position to build strong rosters and compete for championships.

Until I see the entire All-American team flock to BYU, or St. John’s, or Arkansas, I’ll continue to believe thst there is more nuance at play.

We built a strong enough roster in 6 weeks last Spring to make a run at a Title, had we stayed healthy. If roster construction were to take a step back this offseason I would have to reevaluate. As of now, I’m comfortable with our position and direction.

Kam Williams was being recruited by a lot of top programs to include the Tyson sponsored Arkansas. Yet Kentucky got him. 🤔

I completely agree. It isnt like we're incapable of getting a good roster. It helps that we aren't looking for the typical high money player but we will need better athletes to climb the sec mountain again. Its a much tougher assignment than most here understand. Kentucky across the chest only means so much.

Recruited and outbid are two totally different things.

Also we're going to need a better caliber player to be elite.

It’s only a point of contention because people I trust say we’re in the top 10 of all basketball programs nil wise .

So when we get them they didn't want them, but when we don't then we were outbid. Got it.

Everyone please stop listening to these message board insiders that think they know about the NIL budget.

I never said i was an insider. It doesn't take an insider to see what other programs are spending and see we're not in that league.

Quinn ewers had a 10 million nil offer from the big 10 and he isnt even that great. Just imagine what arch manning got. They were both on the same team and only one could play at a time.

We're not scraping by but we're not at the top with some of these other schools.

Outbid? Surely not. I was told by many we're swinging an nil d1ck as big as anyone.

Just because you have the money, doesn’t mean you want to overspend.

I’m hungry and I could use a burger. I’ve got 50 bucks, but that doesn’t mean I’m dropping 50 bucks for a Big Mac.

Can’t blame these kids for getting their money, but I don’t blame Pope if he isn’t writing them a blank check.

Bottom line. Just because you have the money, doesn’t mean you overspend on someone.

But all the top guys are asking for big money. You have to eventually or sweet 16 is your limit.

Watching Houston, you see the type of players we need. Not just one. Maybe Houston's coach can tell Pope what he looks for and how he gets seven of the most athletic and talented ball players in the country to come play for him. Those guys look like pro's playing against a juco team in TN. LJ Cryer said what I said about playing TN. He said that TN tries to be the aggressor on defense and they have to not let that happen so that they are the aggressor. Our guys against TN played on our heels on offense instead of driving by defenders and causing fouls from them playing us so tight. What Pope said after the game, that our guys didn't meet the challenge and play downhill. We was content not at least matching their physicality.

We need a bunch of athletes like Houston that is quick, fast, can jump and is also talented shooting and mentally tough. Can Pope recruit those types? Seems a lot of the top portal guys so far want no part of us. If Demary is that type of player Pope can't stop on him but get at least three others similar like a Wilkerson and Oweh for example.

@GermantownDawg what do you think about Demary? I know he’s rated fairly high but I know nothing about him.
He’s a good kid himself. Shot the ball a lot better toward the end of the year. We really needed him as a lead guard this year and I think that’s why he stayed for his sophomore year. Him and his parents shopped us in the portal last year before returning. Value is obviously higher this year, so I expect him to be gone this time. His dad posts on our board, nice enough, slightly helicopter-ish. We don’t believe Will Wade will pursue even though Silas is from Raleigh, due to his dad.

He’s probably a better off ball guard. Very good defender. If you can get him to buy into an off-guard role, he’ll be a nice fit. Better in a 5 out, Pitino style offense. Wouldn’t be great in a zoom scheme like at UConn. Not sure what Pope’s offensive philosophy is. Would probably be a better off the bench option for what y’all are hoping Pope accomplishes in the future.

If his dad is helicopterish and post on your board…I can only imagine the incoming trainwreck on this board if he starts posting here and Silas has a bad game or 2

Going from being in on the elite PGs in the portal to this in 24 hours is kind of concerning.
All you “fans” CONCERNED over what are Head Coach is going after should stay quiet. He has forgotten more basketball than whatever knowledges you think you have. Oh and he is the head coach so pretty sure he knows exactly who and what we need. Jesus its going to be a long portal season

Exactly same damn thing I said.

I agree but there is a huge problem: reason and sanity long ago left the nil market. Everyone is getting overpaid.

Cbb got off easy till this year. For whatever reason, it took till now for the arrival of the cfb approach of everyone going in the portal every year.

You see what QBs are making so you can bet thats what the top cbb guys will be making. Prices only go up from here.

So overspending is the only option anyone has. Until this gets fixed, this is just how its going to be.

You sound so miserable all the time, my guy. Fans are gonna be concerned about portal season —- it’s something we look forward to. Not everyone has to have the same conclusions. It’s gonna be a fun summer with many ups and downs. Relax and enjoy the process if you want.

I don't honestly care how Pope does it be it through the Portal or recruiting but we need to get wayyyyy more talent than we had on this current squad.
Exactly if we want to to the next step they have to to take the next step and get WAY MORE TALENT than we currently had this year. Even the top of the SEC showed that I mean you want to compete for National Championships you have to have better talent!

Bingo better players demand more money. Better results than the sweet 16 demands better players. In order to get those better players you need to spend that $ ! He said he knows the assignment well he knows it’s to hang banners and we don’t hang sweet 16 banners!

But when we spend a boat load of money on a guy and they don’t pan out, you guys will complain about us overspending in the Portal. LOL!
