Malachi Moreno in 11th Region final game tonight

Thanks for that link. I enjoyed watching Moreno in particular again.

My thoughts on Moreno: Good body and length. Good hands. Good coordination. Good passer on cuts. Smart player. Doesn’t force things. Plays under control. Good rebounder in his area. Blocks out and will get low and wide when necessary. Ball handling looks ok in limited dribbling. Don’t love his FT form – too flat and results in too many bouncing off the back of the rim. Didn’t see the perimeter shot, but the FT form doesn’t suggest to me that it’s a good shot for him at this point? Would like to see a hotter motor, but he doesn’t take plays off or act like the “star.”

Do you think he will contribute next year?

My guess would be 10-12 minutes. But I certainly see the big upside. The way he moves and his actions remind me of Tim Duncan - and before somebody chastises me, I said the way he moves and his actions not his game at this point. I think Pope's probably right that Moreno is the best true center prospect. He may develop, he may not; but I would bet on him being a very good player as an upperclassman.

I could see him being next year’s Collin Chandler. A guy who struggles a little against the speed and strength of the college game early in the year to making a big difference off the bench, maybe starting, by the end of the year.

He’s raw and bg is raw we need a center
He’s pretty raw. Needs to get a lot stronger, needs to work on his shot more than 3 feet out, needs to work on his hands, needs to work on motor. I like the kid, but he can’t be anything but 8-10 minutes a game if that. Next season. This just my opinion from watching him play a handful of games. He’s too weak, little slow, can’t shoot. Passing is ok, but no where near what it needs to be for a Pope offense. Seems more like a 50-75 rank player to me. Not trying to hate on the kid, I just haven’t seen it. If I’m wrong I’ll gladly eat crow.

I guess that I'm quite a bit higher on Moreno that you. Compared to even the typical top ranked high school Centers, I don't think he's raw at all (although maybe that's true in regard to upperclassmen) and I also think his body and strength is good for his age and position. In general, I think he's pretty skilled for a high school Center. But I do agree he probably isn't ready for a lot of minutes next season, although that's what I think in regard to most freshmen and Bigs in particular. As you indicated, Moreno needs time and development. And also like you said, that's just my non-expert opinion based on a handful of games (I'm going to try to watch him again in the state tournament).
