Major rule change coming - no clock stoppage on 1st downs

I can live with that I guess. They only stopped it for a few seconds anyway til they reset the chains which didnt take long. Really just took the one guy to set the new line of scrimmage marker then the chain guys could catch up later.
Now they just need to install a madatory 5 second wait before snapping the ball on each play after ball is set to give time for defense to at least lineup. The only exception would be in the final two minutes of each half when teams may need a hurry up snap to beat the game clock.
This would eliminate turnign the game into a cheap gimmick of who could get set before the other type thing instead of football. But it would still allow teams to play fast because 5 seconds is very fast after setting the ball. The defense would still have to hustle to get lined up and may not have time to sub, but at least it wouldnt be clown show.
Its a small adjustment that IMO would be enough to reduce the gimmickry. Referee just stands over the ball after placing it for 5 then its on. If defenses cant at least get somewhat lined up in that time then good for the hurry up offenses. But to not give them time to line up at all is just sillyness and not real competition.

I prefer the college rule of stopping the clock to move the chains. Makes end of game situations more fun. Hate to see this go.
It's all about TV time and viewership. The long sports are all making or considering shortening the time it takes from start to finish. Baseball is actively doing it and Nascar is somewhat in that process. The NFL is great at ending the games in right around 3 hours. Honestly though, just cutting halftime would put the college game closer to that number. If you get two spread offenses out there that throw a lot then college games become close to four hours. I really don't have four hours to waste on a Saturday. Stoops pound the ground strategy usually does make our games faster than most..
Well at least they will still have first down clock stoppages in the final two minutes of each half. So it’s not quite the old rule, but close.

They need to watch some of the XFL and USFL replay's they have to get this right... That is all they need and if you can't get it right then fire the one's making the call...

Agree. Who likes tuning in to watch UK & find the the previous game is still on with 5 minutes to go? The small amount of reduced plays will also protect rosters from tiredness injuries by the same amount.
Isn’t it really all those pesky commercial TO’s that drag a game out? I really think any saved time just creates space for more advertising money… I’m just too cynical I guess😂
This. If they were serious about truly reducing length of games, the countless tv timeouts would be the first thing they'd cut
That and shorten halftime. Hell you can make a restroom run and make you a quick bite to eat and the NFL halftime is over. In college it feels like the halftime lasts forever.
I guess it's because the bands get time. I'm not a band person either but I do think it would be unfair to those band kids to lose their time. Especially in favor of keeping tv timeouts every five seconds

This right here. Nothing worse than being at the game and seeing the TV timeout clock with like 3 minutes on it. Commercial breaks shouldn't be any longer than a regular timeout.
All replay reviews need to go to picture-in-picture commercials, to remove later tv timeout breaks. Or do picture-in-picture commercials on all extra points (since they are 99% successful).

I personally don’t mind the longer halftime, mostly because I go to all of the home games. Gives me time to make a piss run and stand around and talk about the game with our friends who we don’t sit with. But that’s purely selfish
Then the money wouldn't be there for whatever programs in the schools that money funds. Administrators aren't that stupid.
Reduced clock stoppages results in fewer games/shorter games. Could also reduce quarters to 14 minutes to have fewer plays. All of these favors the teams with less depth. I'm all for evening up the competitive balance between teams.

Since it's the obvious fact to everyone, they aren't really dancing around it imo. They're doing what they can under the circumstances. I'd bet the the TV sponsors want the games done sooner for the same minutes of commercials.
Disagree. It artificially changed the game for no reason. Having the chain sets has no impact for players on field and was a quasi TO for trial team.
