Magoon returns to sdsu

BYU has one guy, the Jazz owner, that is their main donor.

Auburn cares more about football, but has many big time donors.

UK has enough money to get who Coach Pope wants, but he is REALLY hung up on PERFECT FIT. That means he is going to find out if the kid he is paying will be a program guy. That's why when they found out Magoon wasn't TOTALLY bought in to playing here, they weren't going to give him more money. Plus, if he's going to test his NBA Draft prospects, who's to say he won't change his mind after he has committed to UK????

Coach Pope is going to be MORE selective this time, even if it means getting a player that isn't as talented.
how do you know what Pope is doing or who he is going after?
How do you know Magoon wasn't TOTALLY bought in?

Not disputing a word of this because I think you nailed it….but why in the heck are we wasting time with the IU guy? He is a team cancer, it’s why Duke cut ties and he hasn’t EVER demonstrated at any point in the last two years that he will fit inside a team concept well? I’m befuddled

But having that ONE guy make all the difference. He can bankroll the entire team if he wants (which it sounds like be basically is). BYU, in some respects, is now ahead of Kentucky.

I can't comment on the perfect fit part. You might be right, I just personally dont have enough data here. But I'm not sure Kentucky should really be "more" selective, when 350 other schools can now pay players. I think we have to take some risks.

In the end, I try and remember that we really just need 4-5 guys, tops.. and not 10-12 guys like we had. But I've said this all year long, that I really don't think UK is poised that well for the incoming NIL era. I'm very concerned with what I've been seeing.

Lewis and Johnson are ranked higher than Moreno and Moreno played pretty darn well. How are you saying this when it should be what anti UK horse sh*t got in lesser ranked guards than our guys? Uconn's 3 guys getting in over Johnson and Lewis was a massive joke

Yes, Lewis and JJ had great cases and/or should've been there.

Still disappointing only having 1 guy in the game.

For whatever reason. The game in itself is a great marketing tool and barometer for the program.

Oh, I agree totally.

That one has baffled me from the time we found out he was visiting. Unless he has had a COMPLETE attitude adjustment and change in work ethic, he is NOT a player that would do anything here.

Keep believing Duke “cut ties” if you want. Certain posters on here have way too much credibility and many of you just believe what they say.

Now you can have an opinion on the player all you want but that isn’t part of it.

Wasn't he basically recruited over? That was my takeaway.. Duke did it's usual "take anyone higher rated no matter what" and Mgbako saw the writing on the wall, in that his playing time was going to take a hit.

Serious question. Was everyone excited about Magoon? Never even heard of him until yest. Watched film of him yest and was like " He is skinny. He will get handled badly in the SEC." He has talent. But we need Bruiser types underneath for the SEC. He got cold feet. Best of luck to the dude.
Magoon isn't a passing center, which, along with his weight, were the only detractors. He's an athletic freak, a shot blocker, and a three point shooter.

Losing out on him isn't preferable, but it's not the end of the world. Would've been good depth at center.

Yeah he didn’t want to compete with what they had coming in. Which isn’t something you like to see. But the narrative Duke told him to leave is just ignorant.

The Duke piece has very very little to do with my evaluation of him as a player and as a person. It remains a HARD PASS due to the lack of effort he repeatedly put on tape at IU, and that his team repeatedly played better when he wasn’t on the court.

I actually have zero problem if a player leaves after the team went out and found a slightly higher rated piece. That's the program being shiesty in it's dealings, can't really blame the player for backing out.

Now, his time at IU and also transferring there, might be a different story.

That one guy is dwarfed by the money in Lexington

Those things are fine but using Duke didn’t want him and knew all this would happen when there was an argument he could be #1 in is class is silly.

Well the consensus by many was that if BG and Moreno were both here next year, PLUS Magoon, it would probably have to involve one of those 3 getting solid minutes at the 4 spot.

If we land those other 2 (Yaxel and Alvaro), there are suddenly no minutes to be had at the 4 spot, thus Magoon would need to compete with a returning BG and a McDonalds All-American for minutes at the 5 spot.

Idk, grasping here but I feel like there must be something here beyond SDSU just ponying up.
It's the relationship with the staff already plus ponying up in my mind. You said returning BG and a McDonald's all American, remember BG is also a McDonald's all American

The tape don't lie but you could say the same about Jaxson Robinson before he was coached by Pope.
Going by JR's tape at Arkansas and aTm he would have been a hard pass also.

Boosters aren't idiots, they have that money for a reason. There's no reason why they'd harbor some weird fanatical grudge that you have, and hold out giving money even after Cal is gone. That's silly, and it was just a way for you to try and pin this all on Cal.
If you think for a second Cal didn’t try to suck this program dry you’re a f*ckin idiot lol..

Lmfao, in what meaningful way? What did he possibly do that has any tangible effect on the program right NOW?

He can't hurt you anymore.. you don't need to make up false narratives.

Bro…. You’re the last one to throw shade on here lol ..
I don't know when you guys are going to figure out I'm trying to be popular here. Someone told me the other day on here they appreciate my posts. That's one person. That makes it worth it to me. You guys are wasting your time attacking me. I'm not posting for my benefit. I know it's hard to see that in other people when you're only posting for yours. What I posted was objectively hilarious. Sorry that you can't see that. And I mean that. It's unfortunate.

I'm not sure how you can even compare recruiting at BYU. Even with big NIL money, you're asking teenage males to adhere to a moral code that 95% of us wouldn't follow at that age. Some can without issue, but it's an added hurdle to landing players. I'm certain BYU is happy with their coach now as he can convince some good players to go there.

I'm sure Pope, while certainly a man who has his own moral code, feels a bit liberated to recruit at UK and let players experience the college environment most people envision, the same one his teammates experienced in the 90's, except with Lambo money.

Actually it’s not a real waste time. It only takes a few seconds to let you know that you’re awful.

I mean, doesn't that make it even worse? That young males (many African-American) are choosing that school and those restrictions?

That said, something tells me BYU is turning a blind eye to what it's athletes are doing. They're able to circumvent these rules I'm sure.

Who in the hell would try to be popular on a basketball forum? It’s all opinions, that’s all lol.

Hurt me? I give 0 f*cks what ANYBODY does unless it involves my family lol. For you to think he wasn’t sucking the program dry WAY before NIL, you’re delusional.. That’s my option at least🤷 Honestly…. I liked your posts , but damn… can’t imagine how you don’t see that. Guess we’ll agree to disagree 😐

My take. He really liked our coaching staff. Probably loved what the staff told him about how the offense suited him. Loved the attention he got from the staff. Really loved the $$ UK offered. However, probably was not given a promise of a starting position. Then, when the SDSU staff brought him a similar offer and a promise of a starting position and minutes, he took what to him probably looks like the better deal. If you are already living in California, you don’t really understand how much more expensive it is to live there than in most other states. The handlers don’t always want to have the product move outside of the sphere of their influence. So, they push for as much money as they absolutely can until finally taking the preferred offer. I hear San Diego is a nice place to live if you can afford it.

My point is, this no longer has anything to do about Cal, and trying to pin this on him is just missing the point entirely. I'll ask again, how exactly was he "sucking the program dry"? What sort of irreversible damage did he do, or what hole did he put us in that we're climbing out of?

Im not big on anyone who played for SDSU this season so Im relieved. Better players out there.
Probably so. But are we recruiting them? Not really, considering the names that have come out of the guys we are after. Are we landing them? Definitely not.

It maybe different now but just a decade or so ago they suspended one of their best players for the tournament in one of their best years in decades because he’d broken one of the moral codes. I think he was found to have had sex. Oh the humanity.

Oh I forgot about that.. that was the Jimmer Fredette year too, I believe it was their 2nd best player or something.

Maybe it does still apply.

I don't know what it says, all I can say is I'm confident Mark Pope expected his players to follow both the letter and the spirit of the code of conduct at BYU.
