Magoon returns to sdsu

Nope. Cal sucked that dry 👍 boosters tired of spending the money. NIL has officially killed UK ..
Our boosters got tired of spending money but not SDSU, Tennessee, Alabama, UNC, Louisville, Duke, Arkansas, etc.?

Make it make sense. Calipari isn't here anymore. So why would the boosters be "tired" of contributing to a system that is no longer run by Cal?

Mark him off the list and on to the next one (several)
Even with NIL, a coach must be an elite recruiter because about every team now has money. In past years when a school could not legally pay a kid, only schools that took basketball seriously had a system to pay under te table. I actually think with most schools with legal payment a coach must really be elite in recruiting. Let's hope Pope is a recruiting superstar.

Maybe he didn't really want to leave SDSU but felt like he needed to in order to make more NIL money. He looked around, got offers from bigger schools, but SDSU upped their own offer to a point that he was happy with the money and gets to stay at the school he's already happy at. That's not hard to understand.

That's bullshit. Time to stop blaming Cal for all of your life's problems. And further, maybe realize he was the reason we didn't see this happen sooner, like back in the early 2010's.

UK and the state of KY just isn't set up in a position to throw the utmost money at players. Heck I wouldn't even be shocked if a place like SDSU doesn't have a greater abundance of resources to tap into than UK does. Cali money, and on top of that a place that is unequivocally more enticing for the majority of 18-year olds? A state that already has more basketball talent than Kentucky does?

We are going to have to drastically change the way we do things.. and I said it yesterday, it might need to be a new AD who is willing to go the extra mile to overpay to get these players to Lexington KY.

It's also important to understand that we are going to need several players that are going to require top $. Even if we have the highest NIL budget, we can't give every target $2M. Magoon may have been our 5th highest priority, but he was probably SDSU #1 priority.

So mighty UK, with its "elite" NIL, couldn't keep up from a financial perspective with SDSU?
If someone likes where they are, that counts for a ton. It’s probably one of the big reasons we are very likely to keep Otega Oweh. I’m sure schools are throwing money at him trying to get him to leave.

I don't think anyone on this board knows how much NIL UK has. I for one will be glad when this NIL has settled down. Pope is going to get the players that fit his system.

That's the problem, it's not settling down. The only thing that MIGHT happen is programs will eventually get burned by giving a player $2mil and he ends up being very mediocre, causing them to maybe rethink how much they want to spend on the team NIL and an individual NIL.. So I *could* see these bloated salaries come down a bit.. But that's about the only thing that's going to change.

Our boosters withheld money from Cals last few teams. We had more money for Pope last year. I'm not buying the narrative from the other poster.

One thing we might want to also start doing.. go for more regional players. I see UofL just got someone from Xavier, and not to say it's the same situation, but it's probably a lot easier to get someone from a mid-west/mid-atlantic school than it is to pluck someone from California in today's NIL climate.

lol yall are a bunch of whiney babies we only need 4 to 5 players. Still there is people who haven’t entered the portal. Freak out in may or June if we don’t get good players .

Well, he was completely wrong with the scoop he gave us yesterday. So why should we believe he’s got the true story today?

His supposed “insanely interesting story” sounds a lot like someone concocting a tale to try to explain away yesterday’s blunder.
Sounds a lot like he made a prediction hoping he would be correct and could say, "See I know stuff" and when it didn't happen it became the typical, "something changed last minute" nonsense.

I understand he will get players to fit his system. But he got players at BYU that fit his system and never won an NCAA game.

When are some of yall gonna admit Pope screwed up on his assistant hires by not keeping Antigua? It’s clear to me that one of Hart or Brooks shouldn’t be here. Supposedly they were amazing recruiters but they havent lived up to it.

We heard during the year how there were a bunch of top players around the country that loved Popes offense and would be lining up in the portal and it’s just not happened. Just like it didn’t happen last year.

I can already tell what will happen. We will end up with another low ranking portal class like last year. The season will go about like this one, maybe without the injury bug and then when we get bounced in the tournament people will say he got them to overachieve and that they played above their talent. It’ll be the same ones that would pound their chest and say we’re a top team as we beat Duke, Gonzaga, UF and UT but then used the “he only had a month to get players” excuse when we’d lose to OSU, Ark, Vandy, UGA or Texas. Can’t have it both way.

Uh… I just said that UK’s boosters were tired of spending money in another thread, which probably true. Lmao! Life problems? This is a hobby , not a way of life.. You going through a minstrel cycle or somebody piss inn Your Cheerios?

And Auburn Alabama is is any better??????

Lexington is a metropolis compared to that place OR Tuscaloosa.

They're doing SOMETHING to draw in players. That's the issue here.. some schools are in a similar situation as Kentucky, but they are circumventing it, while UK still seems to be doing this whole "We will lure them in with our tradition" bit.

Also, we have no idea who the boosters are and what they are giving. BYU is blowing us out of the water with their NIL and booster money. Maybe Auburn is also ahead of us.

Apparently it is for some people or it doesn't fit their agenda.

Boosters aren't idiots, they have that money for a reason. There's no reason why they'd harbor some weird fanatical grudge that you have, and hold out giving money even after Cal is gone. That's silly, and it was just a way for you to try and pin this all on Cal.

For me, it can't be said enough: this is an entirely new landscape of college basketball, and nothing we did in the past really matters. In a way, every team is starting the race over. For whatever distance ahead schools like UK and IU were, it means nothing now. No amount of legacy or fandom or titles. We HAVE to get around that.

Figure out NIL, draw in money (somehow) from BBN, lean into the fact that this state cares more about it's college basketball team than most states, and change leadership (AD, NIL departments) as needed to fit this new landscape. Do those things.

BYU has one guy, the Jazz owner, that is their main donor.

Auburn cares more about football, but has many big time donors.

UK has enough money to get who Coach Pope wants, but he is REALLY hung up on PERFECT FIT. That means he is going to find out if the kid he is paying will be a program guy. That's why when they found out Magoon wasn't TOTALLY bought in to playing here, they weren't going to give him more money. Plus, if he's going to test his NBA Draft prospects, who's to say he won't change his mind after he has committed to UK????

Coach Pope is going to be MORE selective this time, even if it means getting a player that isn't as talented.
