Long time reader, infrequent poster here. I live in Louisville and have been a Cat fan since watching my very first basketball game on March 27, 1978. I've lived in Louisville on and off since 1974 so I feel like I have a pretty good foundation of knowledge of the Louisville fans and their general psyche and a very healthy dislike of them in general!
For my entire life I've heard from Card fans that UK cheats, regardless of the current coach or administration. That chatter ramped up significantly when Cal became our coach and, without reason to investigate further, I'll admit I had a similar view of Coach Cal. When it was rumored he was to be our next head coach I was worried, having heard all the rumors and knowing about the problems at UMASS and Memphis that I assumed he had a hand in. So I looked into things further.
I won't go into specifics because the facts are what they are if you choose to open your mind and investigate. Suffice to say, I felt much better once I looked deeper at both situations. So my theory is this, I'd be interested in hearing everyone's opinion.
I believe that a vast majority of UofL fans continue to believe that Coach Cal cheats and there is no way UK could keep getting the high quality recruits they get without some form of enticement or illegal benefits given to them. Given that fact, I truly believe that they justify any and all actions taken to sign and keep players based on this belief. 'If you can't beat them, join them' type thing.
On one of the threads someone has asked what the average IQ is of UofL fans. I actually don't think that comes into play. I have friends that are UofL fans, friends that own businesses and are very smart and savvy individuals. It truly amazes me the logic, or lack thereof, that these people display. I've told these people that if this was Coach Cal, I'd want his head on a platter for putting UK in such a position. They are having NONE of it!
They claim, to a person, that UK would look the other way and would back Coach just like they are backing Pitino. I feel the exact opposite. If Coach Cal was caught cheating it would embarrass the hell out of me as a Cat fan, especially if it was by hiring hookers (him or his staff)! It would validate all the trash talk they and many other rival fans have had about UK for all these years!
As many others have said, it's incredibly ironic that UK has been vilified for so long (cheating, racism, etc) when in actuality it's the accusers that have been ten times worse and have gotten away with it most of the time!! UCLA with Gilbert, UNC, Duke and now UofL all have done worse in modern times than UK has done. And most of the 'evidence' against UK is suspect at best. I know we have had some transgressions in the past but it appears they mostly pale in comparison to what these 'saints' of college basketball have done!
