Always fun to see how some of the coaches that were mentioned for the job have panned out. Sonny Dykes and Stoops both taking a very similar path (both 10-18 overall with 4 conference wins) to building their respective programs up. Both looking to be great hires by their respective schools.

Interesting how really good coached adapt to the situations. Despite his reputation, they have 167 rushing attempts and 152 passing attempts through 4 games. He'd have done well here I think but we have the right man.

Lord only knows who was really on Mitch's list. But most of the names I remember hearing speculation on are doing ok. Mike McIntyre, Sonny Dykes, Gary Anderson, Butch Jones, Mark Hudspeth. I think we got the best choice for UK. And obviously, that thirsty scumbag who we never wanted talk to would be the worst of the bunch.

I'm happiest with Stoops because he recruits so well. no guarantee those guys could put together the OHIO to KY connection like Stoops has... no guarantee they would recruit as good in general.

Sykes has worked his way up. Have to respect that and wish him luck.

Dykes was my top pick, but he basically passed on the job as did Jones once Tennessee came calling.

We were down to Dirk Koetter, and McIntyre before Stoops basically called and sold himself to the program.

As much as I wanted Dykes I don't think they could have recruited like Stoops and his staff have.

Mitch spent more than a "hello" with Hudspeth on the field after the game. I did not realize at the time that he was a candidate.

I expected his name to come up soon, though I didn't think it would be this soon. I figured we'd start having a few posters start, "Who's gonna be the HC after Stoops leaves for greener pastures?" threads.

Boy, oh, boy.......I can't wait for those to start. [roll eyes with extreme sarcasm]

Good for Dykes. I thought he would be a bust. I thought they would put up Playstation numbers on offense and have a Mike Major defense.

My two favorites for the job back then were Dykes and Hudspeth. Of course we hadn't heard of Stoops at that time. We did pretty well with the choice we did make but it's nice to know the alternatives were pretty good as well.

But he sure can coach!! Or can he??

I dont think its an overstatement to say that we wouldve been in BIG trouble had Stoops not contacted Mitch.

IMO all of Mitch's candidates this last round were very solid ... and proving it. Dykes the most successful to date, but Stoops isn't far behind him.

MacIntyre at Colorado probably in last at the moment, but even he's at 3-1 right now. That Colorado job is a bear ... maybe tougher than the Kentucky job.

You have to give Sykes credit for bringing Tony Franklin with him as offensive coordinator. Franklin has an amazing record every where he has been. Cal's quarterback Golf has developed into a potential NFL high draft pick under Franklin.

Which one is Sykes?

some people will stop at nothing to drag Barnhart into the mud. He made mistakes like all AD's have but he's made great hires except for 2. Brooks was a great hire as well, perfect coach for what we were going through at the time.

You people Crack me up. What's funny about this is not only does it show how far you will go to take credit from Mitch. But also that you have probably never worked a day in your life. I don't know how you could ever get hired. You act like showing interest in getting a job is this great secret only Mark Stoops knew about. Everybody called and sold themselves. It's not luck, it's a requirement.

Curious to see how Colorado fares against an Oregon team not living up to expectations.

Well, except that Auburn thing. Got fired at Kentucky, too, IIRC.

I'd forgotten that Dykes and Stoops were on the same staff for several years, as OC and DC.....

Thats BS. Coaches DO NOT call to inquire about a job like Kentucky unless they are coaches on the fringe.

We have to beg coaches to come here, its the way its always been (hopefully Stoops will change that) so Stoops calling us was a huge deal.

Its been widely reported that Stoops WAS NOT on his list and that HE contacted UK. So in essence Mitch shouldn't be given the credit for the Stoops hire.

That being said Mitch is awful. This is the same guy who the day before he fired Joker said that anyone who had anything against joker obviously had a "agenda". He of course fired him the next day (again imo he was forced to do this, otherwise why the complete 360 in 24 hrs?)

The same guy who had to be forced to hire Calipari AFTER he had hired the nightmare known as BCG.

This is the same guy who passed on SEAN PAYTON as our HC.

Mitch is a joke.

Thank God we have Mark Stoops.

SEC says it all... There is a difference in coaching in this league... JMO....

Jared, you were there when MB had to hire Cal and when Stoops called?
Sports radio isn't a source.

I don't even think we can put the Joker hire on him. Of course he had the final say so but he was taking Brooks word for it. Brooks made the recommendation and Barney trusted Brooks. I think the Joker hire is a push really.

It wasn't even his idea to hire Brooks. Brooks had to mention it to him after Barney had struck out on a bunch of other candidates.

Anyone who says Mitch is a joke probably holds lengthy opinions not worth reading.

I think the way it went down was Barneys first few candidates passed. He was talking to Brooks during the process and getting advice from him. Brooks told him to hang in there and try a few more phone calls but if nothing came up he would come out of retirement and coach UK. Brooks showed tremendous loyalty to Barney by doing that IMO. He must be an ok guy to work for. I know Brooks made some off hand comments on his way out the door. Stuff like we need to get with the 21st century and things. But I think it was more to let Barney know what it was gonna take to lure more attractive candidates here in the future. Seemed to work too as Barney had a couple to pick from this last go round.

1. Rich Brooks suggested himself as UK head coach after consulting with Mitch B. on other possible candidates. Mitch B. took his advice and hired him. Final decision: Mitch B. Grade: Pass

2. Brooks advised naming Joker head coach in-waiting to prepare for his eventual retirement and Phillips taking over. Mitch B. took his advice and did so. Final decision: Mitch B. Grade: Fail

3. Mark Stoops was not a candidate for the UK head coaching job until he called and spoke to Mitch B. Mitch B. interviewed and hired him. Final decision: Mitch B. Grade: Incomplete, heading towards pass.

*I presumed these are well-known circumstances regarding the last 3 UK head coaching searches and hires.
