Let's check in on the coach who turned us down

Some of these teams are idiots with the teams that they play in the first game!!

What the hell are you doing?

Schedule better or regret it later.

Quite honestly Kentucky shouldn't be playing Duke in like the third or fourth game in that stupid championship classic. This should be the last damn year we do this.
It was a calipari thing and I ain't down with it

Hindsight is 20/20 but now that we see what Mark Pope brings to the table this was easily the right decision if our two legit candidates were CMP and Drew.
Drew is booooooring. He got lucky. He will never recreate that past success. Thank god he rejected Mitch. Pope has a system. He recruits for the system. He will adjust the system if data merits he should. He loves Kentucky. He would die for Kentucky.

It’s early for whomever we play too. I think it was bad for UK in past years because of how young the cats always were. Now and in future years I would wager UK will often have the advantage due to experience.

I've felt great about the Pope hire from the outset. Nothing but positive momentum since he began here.

We are Kentucky!

Kentucky basketball is eternal because the former players and fans, and all those proud supporters over the many years, CARE so much about Kentucky basketball, it can only be a success.

When you care about something so very much, as we do, I say THAT is the gold standard. Not just in college basketball, but in ANY SPORT. The GOLD STANDARD is wearing the name on the FRONT of the jersey with pride, representing with class and swag everywhere Kentucky fans go!

It's why AL McGuire said Kentucky had it before you were here, while you were here and they'll have it after you're gone.... he totally got it. It's as true now as it ever was.

Go Big Blue !

This isn’t football, an early loss isn’t going derail anyone’s season. I love the Champions Classic, always good match ups. I didn’t like it as the first game, but perfectly fine with it being the third one. Do you really want to just play teams like Wright State all November?

Yep, Pope has accomplished just as much as any seasoned coach would have at this point.

- Assembled team, check
- Team practices and comes together, check
- Modern basketball, check
- Game 1 blowout of mid major, check (YOU ARE HERE)
- Win games against ranked teams
- Win SEC
- Win SECT
- High seed in NCAAT
- Final Four

I want to see how we stack up against the better teams early, see what we have to work on and see what works right. If we beat Duke it’s a feather in our cap, but if we lose, it’s not going to make or break our season. Plus we are going to be underdogs going into the game anyway.

I'll admit it; I wanted Drew but I got over the loss somewhere during Pope's initial press conference and a month ago I wouldn't have traded Pope for a half dozen Drews. Now I probably wouldn't trade Pope for any other coach. For me the honeymoon is definitely not over.

I mean, it's a little early for that. Drew is a fine coach and would have done well here. He's a top 5 coach in his profession. I still love the excitement that BBN is feeling.
Did I make any declaration in my post about how Pope is going to turn out here in the long run? So why would you allude to me saying that? You like to twist everyone's posts and be the contrarian all of the time. I would have said the same thing about Drew whether Donovan, Hurley, Pearl, Oats etc was the HC of UK. My post has nothing to do with Pope and all about I would have envisioned a Scott Drew Era here. 'Well' is not good enough for the Kentucky job. He routinely takes these losses in big games, 1 title and more 10-loss seasons on the resume just like the previous coach here in his later years. I don't even see him having the same fire and energy needed for the demands of the job that Pitino, Cal and now Pope has when first arriving. So yes, I will claim bullet dodged. Whether you agree with it or not is irrelevant.

I never, ever wanted Drew. He was the one I did t want. I just don’t like that guy. I don’t even know why really, just seems so so boring and opposite of what we need here. So glad he said no. That was a blessing man, it would not have worked.

Drew is a good coach and can build a championship team. His teams tend to get better during their conference schedule. I am happy we have Mark Pope but, dogging Drew over one turd of a game, and an opening game against a title contender at that, is a bit silly.

Yeah, I think a lot of people don't realize Gonzaga has most of last years roster returning. They are really good and I can't wait to see how we stack up.

In 2010, I would be more open to listening to defenses of Scott Drew losing 10 games while he built up Baylor from the disaster inherited from Dave Bliss. However, once you reach a certain level of success like he did winning the 2021 NCAA Tournament, you are expected to maintain that success. Doesn't mean there won't be down seasons, but consecutive 11-loss seasons the last two years for Drew would not ignite the fan base who would be expecting 2021 results from his teams. That record is nearly on par with CCC here for his last 2 seasons. 2 Big 12 Regular Season Championships since taking over in 2003, no Big 12 Tournaments Titles. He isn't as great some people make him out to be. Even if Pope for some reason bombs here, doesn't mean Scott Drew would have been any more successful. At least we're going to be watching a fun style of basketball here again and one of our own lead BBN!

I’m sorry, did I mention pope? I did not. What are you talking about?

I think Drew is a good coach. I said as much. I alluded to nothing. I just disagreed with you. You’ll be fine

You know damn well who you were alluding to and what I am talking about. "I mean, it's a little early for that." If not Pope, the actual head coach of UK. Who else would you be referring to? Otherwise, your post makes zero sense. As usual, you take people's post out of context to make it look like you are somehow smarter than everyone else.

Ok I can spell it out to you. I was alluding to Drew. It’s too early in the season and overall to claim that UK dodged a bullet by missing out on
drew. If Drew’s team plays better and improves beyond game 1 and perhaps makes another final 4 would you still think we dodged a bullet?

What did you think I was alluding to?

Again, you take the post completely out of context and only you are making this about one game. I am looking from his entire career for a coach no better than the one that just left. As someone else stated, he has consecutive 11-loss seasons and only won 2 Big 12 Conference titles for someone who has held the job for 21 years. You can play hypothetical scenarios all day long, doesn't change a damn thing. If you said it is too early to tell how the Pope Era is going to for who you were alluding to with that comment, it would have made more sense for someone trying to make that point even though I disagree with it since I don't find Drew to be a good fit for the University of Kentucky. I'm not even a big Bruce Pearl fan, but someone with his energy, Mark Pope or a young Pitino/Cal who had that energy early on. Drew is perfect for Baylor. Doesn't have the demands of the UK job and still win enough to appease that program.

I thought it was pretty obvious what I was saying. You said we dodged a bullet and I disagreed. Simple as that. I’m excited for pope too.

We disagree on Drew. It’s ok.

I believe Kentucky isn't for Scott Drew, and IMO that's why he turned down the opportunity. Lower bar of excellence where he's at.
