Lanning out of the running for AL job

Maybe it's just me, but Kiffin just has the look that pisses people off and I kinda like him. I think he will jump all over it if offered. But if they run candidates by Saban will he get the thumbs up? I saw him give Kiffin some dog cussing on the sideline and eventually fire him.
Agree about Kiffin. For some reason, he has a perception in the media of a very likable villian. When I watch him on interviews, he just comes across as a grumpy jerk. However, he is a very solid football guy with high upside.

If Lanning receives and offer well see if he still says no. It is easy to say publicly not interested but different if your phone rings.
Apparently already happened. Bama people talked to his people and Oregon put up more money and Lanning is staying. I'm sure it was done like the old... "if we were to offer X amount of money for 5 years, would you be interested in our job?"....

Name now seems to be Deboer... We'll see if he wants into that frying pan. LOL.

DeBoer is legit. The question is, is he a SEC coach? He has zero connection to Southern football.
Bryan Harsin had a great resume when he went to Auburn. Not as good as DeBeor, but, not even Auburn is the pressure cooker that Alabama is, after Saban.

Crazy things can happen in college football coaching. Vince Dooley coached GA for years but was an Auburn grad. In the same era Pat Dye, a GA grad, coached Auburn for years, Never know.
Yeah, but those guys didn't leave their alma mater to go coach at a rival school that was similar in terms of success. I'm trying to think of a situation like that and I can't.

Kornheiser on PTI just brought up Urban Meyer. He said he’d figure out the portal in 15 minutes and if Bama hired him he’d win a natty in 2-3 years. Bama needs to hire quickly to keep the incoming recruits from going elsewhere.

Why would Kirby leave UGA? He's an UGA Alum, and has for the most part dethroned Bama with his B2B National Championships. There's nothing Smart can't or isn't accomplishing at UGA than he could at Bama. They recruit at virtually the same level. All in all UGA is Bama's equal at this point. It would be a lateral move at this point.
I know. I don't think he would. But you still have to make that call.

Texas has to be one of, if not the best job in College Football now that they're in the SEC. Elite state and now elite conference that's only going to help recruiting with more exposure from the big southeast States.

Also just heard the reason for his retirement is his wifes health.

You had to figure Phil Knight was going to make an offer Lanning couldn't refuse.

Sark is interesting. Alabama and maybe a top end playoff ready NFL team are about the only two gigs you leave Texas for. Now that Texas is in the SEC, maybe just the latter. I imagine the brass and boosters are drafting up a whopper of an offer as we speak.

Wouldn't surprise me if all the top tier "young up and comer" names say no. I think in this era of an ever-changing CFB landscape marquee name coaches may stay put. Washington, Oregon, Texas...all the big top end P5 programs can pay.

In eras past those types of guys would bounce without hesitation for access to better recruiting, more money, and better shot at play offs. Now they don't have to thanks to portal, NIL, and expanded playoffs.

If they say no, I think you call Urban Meyer. Then, a dark horse and former Washington coach Chris Pederson. That dude was a hell of a coach and has an unreal record. Not sure why he retired honestly.

Greg Byrne has given himself a short time frame for a decision, necessary so they can re-recruit their players and signings before they bolt. Lanning has been reported in Tuscalosa this week, so he was their first interview. Either Bama did not offer him the job (the Rick Barnes scenario), or else Lanning used it to finagle a raise out of Oregon. He is off the board. Sark will not leave Texas. They won't interview Deion because Deion is unproven as a P5 coach. That leaves DeBoer, Kiffin, Norvell, and Vrabel. I do not expect them to offer Norvell. DeBoer would be a good choice but they would have to pair him with a strong recruiting coordinator with southern connections because DeBoer is not known in the south. Kiffin seems like a logical way for them to go now, but he may have burned bridges when he left Tuscaloosa. But Byrne will make a good hire for them.

Sark probably next call. You gotta call Kirby too. Don't think he'd leave Georgia but you at least have to make that call
Kirby Smart isn't leaving UGA for all the tea in China. Sark better stay at Texas. He doesn't need the pressure of following Saban. His personal history makes that seem pretty clear.

Kiffin should be the guy but, who knows what the dynamics between he and the booster class around Bama are?
Norvell wouldn't be a bad hire IMO. Has a lot of connections in the South and has revived a FSU program that was languishing in obscurity.
Dabo needs to get his head out of his butt and join the rest of college football in 2024.
Kirby Smart doesn't need Bama at this point.
Meyer would be a surprise pick. But, he has some sketchy ego baggage that might not fit well in Tuscaloosa.
Super darkhorse would be convincing Pederson to come out of retirement.
NONE of these names can approach the success that Saban brought to Bama. He built a dynasty that will likely never be equaled.

It's gonna be a tough fill. Texas is a peer program to Alabama. Kirby has Georgia rolling. Kiffin is a possibility but I'm not sure how well he parted ways with Bama administration before. Neon Deion maybe? He has the personality for a big job.

I think they might look to the NFL. Vrabel is now available as is Carroll. Not really sure who the hot coordinators are right now.
Neon is not in consideration for water boy. I would not consider Texas a peer program to Alabama, Texas has 1 NC in last 20 years and only 2 or 3 Conference Championships. Texas has been the Indiana of football for a long time.

Wealthiest school in the nation. They have more gold holdings in their endowment than most schools have in their entire endowment. Lots of oil money from way back.

Texas has way more money than Alabama, but, it they want to be considered a peer then Texas needs about 20 years of success and 4 -6 Natty's.

Dabo played for Bama, so that may be somewhat of an appeal to him, and when he discovers he doesn't have to work too hard at dealing with NIL stuff because there are plenty of resources at Bama to cover that, he may change his tune. Even the portal, Bama usually isn't in a position to be needing to raid the portal every year, they fill a need or two here and there. People raid Bama for the portal, not the other way around.

That being said, Kiffen would crawl on his knees to Tuscaloosa for that job.
Bama gets more 1-2 guys a year. Gibbs, Burton , Steen and rhe TE we’re all starting players in 2022

They tried to but Drake Maye at Qb last year.

Bama does more then fill a hole here or there

I would bet Kiffin’s agent called someone at Bama or connected with the program within hours, if not mins; after Saban’s announcement.

Some Bama folks are hearing the hire will be announced tomorrow, whoever it is

Yep, that's how it works, it allows the school to say the hire was the first offered, never-ending he was the 8th to be asked if he was interested.

Lots of folks at Bama concerned about the portal, Bama players now have 29 days left to enter with Saban stepping down and they can go to SEC schools and be eligible this fall. So they want to get someone there to hold things together.

Current rumor mill is that it’s been narrowed down to Kalen DeBoer (Washington) or Mike Norvell (Florida State). Nothing official though, and we’ve seen how quickly these things can change.

Bama people were saying some coach's agent was at Bama today talking. They were trying to figure out who the coach was by looking up the agent. Turned out the guy represents like 6 of the 10 names mentioned. LOL.

Bryan Harsin didn’t have as good a record as either of the two coaches who preceded him at Boise State. It was just a really odd hire by Auburn.

1 of these 2 will be hired within hrs. Betting leaning to DeBoer.

It's just not true that Texas has more money than any college in the country. The endowment at Texas is the sum of all the schools under the umbrellas of University of Texas, not just the one in Austin. Stanford's is bigger that UT @ Austin and quite a few of the Ivy league schools are. Texas has lots of money, but not the largest endowment,

Likely, because Byrne is in a hurry. The longer this goes on, the more Bama players go into the portal. The NCAA has a special transfer rule when the coach leaves.

Yes, but had either of them started their coaching careers at their Alma Maters, you think either of them would have left for the the other? Would have been lateral moves for either of them. You think Kirby wants to basically be disowned by his Alma Mater by moving laterally to one of their rivals and chief competition for the SEC throne?

Vince Dooley started his career St AU and was an assistant there for 7 years. Well college career, coached a couple years of HS.

Is Kiffin the John Calipari of College Football?

Bama set a 72 Hour deadline, but I have to think much of this was in the works before Saban announced. I'm sure the Admin wasn't really blindsided by his announcement.

Not sure if their AD knew it was happening this week. but he should have been prepared to make an instant job offer to his preferred candidates ever since Saban turned 70.

People in Bama land are worried if they don't get a coach soon that half their roster could hit the portal.

Not talking about the past. This thread is about the current Alabama job, and right now they are peers. There is no way Sark will leave what he has going on at Texas for an unknown Bama job. Texas is also stupid rich.
