Kolbi Albert gone

Albert is not a big loss, because he would not have been on our two deep chart next season and he knew that. He has potential, because he can run. But he was in a system at Kentucky that requires safeties to stick their noses up on the box and occasionally blitz the quarterback. I watched Albert when he got into games. IMO, he is too small to be a starting SEC safety. When Albert was in high school, some schools wanted him as a playmaker for their passing game. I still think that might be his future.
This. I thought because of his speed they might move him to corner, but….

If Albert had the flexibility, length, and small space skills to play on the corner, I think he would have been moved out there by Brad White. We have a bunch of young corners and none are faster in a straight line than Albert. But all are longer than Albert. I always wondered why Albert wasn't tried as a slot receiver, but now I assume he did not want that.

Any player that our coaching staff brings in and leaves is a big loss IMO. They got them to Kentucky for a reason.

That's true. But they are brought in to compete for jobs. I don't want players to leave. But if a player leaves because he has not been able to crack the playing rotation, the departure opens a scholarship for another player to come in and compete. The nature of competition.

Albert was a pleasing sign because he had a nice number for a rating and flipped from Auburn. What is not to like? But Stoops is bringing back a bunch of safeties including Tisdale. Albert knew he was not in line to play much. Instead of going to spring practice and trying to improve his position, he chose Starkville. That frees up a scholarship. If that makes him a big loss, then it is what it is. But with the success Stoops is having with the transfer portal, these things have to be looked at in that perspective.

Geiger, Dodson, and Tisdale will be back. The November starters Lovett and Childress will be back. Anglin and Bryant were signed as safeties. We do not know yet for sure that Dunn will not end up as a safety, only that he will start out as a corner. Afari could be a safety or corner. Either way, we are deep at safety.

Interesting fact. All-NFL safety Derwin James is Anglin's cousin.

We've got so many guys at safety and they all played so well this season. Sorry to see anyone go but that's football.
