Keys to the W on Tuesday……

Somewhat concerned when but Butler and Oweh in at the same time and they sag off them, if they are missing outside shots. Changes how we like to play and clogs up the game.
I look for Duke to totally ignore Williams and Garrison above the free-throw line.
That’s what I would do …

I’m going with Butler and Oweh making it difficult for Duke to initiate offense. First pass denial on Flagg as well. Timely help/dig downs coming from different spots when he does catch it. Make him uncomfortable and make him make decisions. He’s going to get his but make him work. He seems already to be susceptible to cramping up in the second half.

This is exactly how we win. Have our guards harass their guards so it eats up shot clock and makes it tough for them to get the ball to flagg.

I've seen multiple people say that Carr needs to get going or show something. He's averaging 11 ppg/3rpg/2apg. He's scored as many points as Robinson. Not to mention he's stretching defenses and opening up lanes and running the floor well in transition.

He's doing fine.
He gets a lot of balls slapped away from him...needs to have stronger hands

I trust we will get good defense from Butler and Oweh. I think Kriisa and Carr will show up for a big game.
To me it’s:
1) can we not lose the offensive glass by too much (by no more than 5)
2) can more than 1 guy make 3’s

He is doing fine offensively. A little worried about the defensive side but we will see.

Get Knueppel in foul trouble by attacking him off the bounce with some combination of Oweh, Robinson, or even Chandler. He seems to be their weak link defender and if he’s on the bench their scoring ability, especially from deep, should be diminished.

So everyone has to play good, not bad
That’s what I’m getting from thread
Also, hitting shots

Seriously..there’s no guarantee that we can win this game; too many factors.
But what I am sure of is this team will fight. They will play their game and they’ll be well coached. I don’t think it will be a blow out loss if it IS a loss. I truly believe we will be competitive

I think its as easy as defending without fouling. We haven't experienced foul trouble yet, and I hate to play into the trope, but my fear is Oweh, Butler and Williams getting in foul trouble early and clipping our wings that have allowed us to fly high so early on. If we can defend hard but smart and avoid foul troubles, and hit a solid clip from deep, we are tough to beat.

I dont know how we defend flag as he's a match up nightmare for us. Someone we'd typically put a Thiero type player on, but we have none of those. I almost feel like putting Oweh on him and harassing him to put his ball handling to the test and forcing him to be a jump shooter. Or we let Carr just do his best and shut down the other 4 on the court and just accept Flagg will get his.
Oweh is the only answer we have to guarding flagg. I’m sure the coaching staff knows that. Oweh needs to forget about his offense in this game and use all of his energy to keep Flagg from dominating. Still doesent guarantee success is he shuts him down, but anyone else guarding Flagg and he will have a field day

FYI

Andrew Carr had 18 points in a win against Duke last season. 8-14 from the field. He was 1-4 from 3 and 1 rebound.

He had 12 (6-9 shooting) in a loss a few weeks before that at Duke. No 3s and 5 rebounds.

So he’s proven he can score on Duke’s defense.

I didn’t dig very deep, but he’s probably the only guy on the team with history of playing against Duke. He is probably heavily involved in the game planning for Tuesday night.

Play smart, hard and together and they get the W. If not, I hope they give their all and I’ll be pleased.

Butler really needs to look like a veteran floor general. He was Wheeler-level rough against Bucknell and Pope had enough of it when he yanked him out.

Oweh or Robinson needs to show some attitude and become a star.

More Williams, less Garrison.

Brea keep hitting - no disappearing act a la Kellen Grady or Antonio Reeves on the big stage.
Hmmm. In 2022, Reeves didn't disappear, he just had a bad shooting night and went 1-15. While he shot us out of the game, he was probably our most consistent shooter all year with Tyty and Grady hurt the last third of the season. He had a lot of great games including 37 pts at Arkansas and averaged around 15 ppg if my memory serves. We had to have Reeves shooting in the St Peter's game because other than Oscar, no one was giving us much.

Many of his misses were in and out and that can happen to any shooter on occasion. Last year he averaged nearly 20 ppg and played pretty well against Oakland. My point is there is a difference between disappearing, as in not wanting the ball or doing very little in the way of contribution, and not having a great shooting night but contributing in other ways such as boards, blocks, assists, steals and rebounds. Against Oakland, Reeves didn't torch them with his shooting, but neither was he stone cold as I recall the game. He hustled his ass off and played unselfishly. We lost that game in large measure because we didn't play good team defense, most notably we failed to run Oakland's best 3-p shooter off the 3-p line or really even challenge his shots. Reeves played like an All-American last year and he didn't receive the credit he deserved. This week he scored 34 points for New Orleans coming off the bench. He showed just how good he really is and that he's very capable of putting up good numbers in the NBA too. He gave us everything he had for 2 years, so let's not denigrate him.

Another game (team) that Carr knows all too well. Hope he shows out like Duke game.

We need to have crisp clean passing, fewer TOs than the last couple of games. We need rebounding and play our game. Not sure 1 guy over any other has to be the guy for this game. All too well known by now that we can have 1 of about 7 guys be the leading scorer any night. Hope Garrison is available. Just keep the ball moving to the open / good shot. Oweh, Butler and Williams keep being the pest on defense. Garrison, Kerr, Chandler, Brea and Almonor keep being the spark off the bench. Any of those guys can score. I doubt we see a ton of Chandler. Probably more Garrison, Brea, Kerr and Almonor with the starters Tuesday. Gonna be a late game. GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!

What bothered me about the Oakland game was their 6.7 PF having his way with all 3 of our 7 footers. Everyone talked about the 10 3pointers, but their "big man" looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger against 3 pee wee Hermans

Call Boise state coach get film and do what they did to kill Clemson. We have better players than Boise state 😃
