I haven't found the original version of this game ever online...I haven't really seen it since that day. That was such a fun time for football. The Brooks era really was the beginning of the modern era...and I really think it gave us hope to demand better from the University for football. We saw the heights we could reach.
Louisville had won 7 of 8. They were coming off an Orange Bowl win with Brian Brohm and all his weapons back.
Probation really killed our program. We could take losing to Louisville...but they were flat dominating us at the time while we had become a joke losing to teams like Ohio. Brooks really worked his butt off to get us back and many don't realize what he was up against...a much tougher SEC schedule with Florida/Urban, Tennessee/Fat-Phil, UGA/Richt, Spurrier/USCjr., and even Vandy was no slouch with Bobby Johnson. Not to mention facing freaking the national champion LSU Tigers that year too. Then add in Louisville was a top 10 team...all while we had scholarship restrictions, recruiting in the basement of the SEC, and flat out awful facilities...
This game meant something.
-Woodson, Burton, Tamme, Williams, Duncan, Johnson, and Jeffries were 7 of our starting 11 on offense all from Kentucky
-Pryor, Peters, Warford, and Mcclinton on defense from Kentucky.
-Tim Mastay, Tydlacka, Alphonso Smith, Micah Johnson, David Jones, & Dickie Lyons all playing major minutes from Kentucky.
These were kids from our state...beating the best Louisville recruit ever in Brian Brohm...the Royal Family of Louisville Football. We weren't the most talented...but we had the most fight. This team really was like the Unforgettables....except they didn't have the attention or resources of Kentucky Basketball.
Enjoy this game as I will!
