Might as well start the season off right, with a little preview.
UK gets Miami (OH) for the first game. Speaking of first games... this is the first time UK will open with a home game since 1983. Game time is Tuesday at 4:00pm. The Redhawks will come into KPP with a 3-0 record as they swept Jacksonville on the road. Despite this record, make no mistake... this is not a very good baseball team we will be facing tomorrow. As evidence... they hit just .218 over the weekend and still won all three games. They struck out a whopping 36 times. So, pitching and defense carried them this past weekend. In fact, they had 18 walks over the three games while giving up just 5. That made a significant difference for them. Also, they had 0 errors while Jacksonville had 5.
It is hard to guess who will pitch for Miami, but 8 pitchers threw for them this weekend, so we have to imagine it is not one of them that will start. My best guess is going to be Blackmore and that is merely because the sophomore righty had a start a year ago. I have to imagine that those who started for them this weekend are probably better than their midweek guy, so UK should be able to hit. However, the defense should travel, especially on the artificial turf at KPP.
The middle of the lineup for the Redhawks seems to be where the danger lies with Zapp and Vogelsang. Those two hit .333 and .357 this weekend with Zapp hitting a pair of triples and Vogelsang a double. So, have to watch out for those guys as they can hit and they racked up 7 RBIs. So, there is a bit of danger there. Redhawks continue to play with their lineup, so we will see what that does for them.
For UK:
I think things will look a bit different for them as some continue to test positive and have injury troubles. In particular, I think you might see Schultz back in the infield this week and you might see Plastiak at third. So, I think that Shelby will be in the outfield along with Hill and Rhodes.
On the mound it remains a question, but some seem to believe that the weekend guys will be Stupp, Hazelwood, and Lee. That would lead me to think that Hagenow will go tomorrow. I think that is not out of the realm of possibility, although Strickland is another that could go. I imagine that everyone will have a pitch count.
