This is really funny they are doing this. How many do you think the team has show up for this?

I’m a pretty easy going, light hearted person. I do not know what’s funny about them doing this??? 😂

Every team in America has walk on spots, including every single team under Cal. Difference is, Pope is giving kids the chance to make the team instead of Cal hand picking his friends kids to be on the team as walk ons.

I think the kids should be picked by what they can do off the court that would be beneficial to the program:
-Do they come from a family that could be potentially great donors to the program?
-Do they have influential family in the basketball community?
-Could they be a piece that could help get an elite recruit?

I don't care where they are from or if they can dribble.

Would have been much easier to say you want Rich kid walk-ons.

Guessing a lot the story says you have to email your credentials and then guessing the staff picks a select few to actually show up for the tryout.
Yep..."The Wildcats are asking interested players to submit their height, weight, position and contact information for their high school basketball coach. The tryout is open to all academically eligible, full-time Kentucky students. According to the announcement, the team will narrow its list of potential walk-ons and invite preferred candidates to the tryout Aug. 30."

Looks like Pope had some big rosters at BYU the past couple of years:

23/24 - 16 (4 walk-ons)
22/23 - 17 (5 walk-ons)

As much as I disliked Bobby Knight, “Knight School”, the Texas Tech walk-on tryout reality show from 2006 was great TV. Anyone else remember that?
I found that show fascinating. Put aside the obvious issues with him, it was interesting to learn some coaching insights.

This. The way it should be. Props to CMP.

Wish we had a JV team.

That was one of the first things that started to irritate me about Cal even when things were rolling and he wasn’t openly down talking the fanbase yet.

Completely insignificant from a results standpoint. But a huge indication he didn’t truly understand what this program meant to the people who grow up here. If you’re filling the walk on spots with 2-3stars that are willing to develop and grow then absolutely go recruit the best guys you can find that are willing to walk on. But if you’re picking your Pennsylvania family friends kids thats 5’9, 140lbs soaking wet, averaging 4pts a game on HS…. That’s a spot that should have been given to any instate kid who would have literally cut a finger or more off o wear that jersey….and you also would have been able to find some decent overlooked talent in the state like a Jared Polson, Landon Slone, Elijah Justice, Jon Hood, so on and so forth…NAIA/D3/D2 type scholarship kids that would have walked on and maybe developed into a continuity role player piece by their Jr/Sr/super senior year like a Josh Harrelson, Dom Hawkins
