I've always been curious about what Big Blue does post Calipari. Do y'all try and go after someone who uses the same one and done model? Or go the more "traditional" route where your better players, er more impactful players are your upperclassmen? Obviously, both can and have worked in the past. Would y'all be disappointed if the next coach doesn't reel in the McD's AAs at the rate Cal has? It would damn near be impossible, but that doesn't mean the next guy couldn't be as successful. Just wanted to gauge yalls thoughts on that.

We win either way, so we just go with UK... Period!

So I take it you'll be good not having a roster full of McDonald All-Americans? I mean, UK will always have some no matter who's in charge, but to this level..

It doesn't matter as long as the list continues. We will go for the best available no matter what philosophy he has.

We will most likely always pull some all Americans. I'm worried about nothing when Cal is gone. I'll sleep like a baby because nothing will stop this program.

"I'm just the next guy to sit in that seat" - john Calipari.

I've been alright with all stars, or not all stars, whatever... Kentucky takes their best five and beats your best five... Period! This has always happened... Go check you records on UK and if I'm lying, come here and tell me....

I'm not trying to pick a fight. I'm simply trying to understand Kentucky fans' preference as to the makeup of their teams. Nothing more.

I think the landscape of the game changes so much that it'll be a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. We may even see that while Cal is still here.

Without speaking for everyone, I think most fans will be fine with any approach or philosophy that produces results, while several of our fans won't be happy with any philosophy or any results.

Cal does not recruit OAD players. He recruits the best high school players in the country! I hope this philosophy never changes at UK. What makes Cal unique is the way he handles those players. He encourages players to leave if they are ready for the NBA. We eventually will have to hire a coach that has a more "traditional" team. There is only one Cal!

Neither am I... I'm telling you that it doesn't matter who any UK coach places on the court... Five, 5* kids, or a mature team.. If we got a team of three 3* and two 4* kids, we will win...

Like I said, if you will do some checking you will find out why It doesn't matter... I enjoyed following players that out worked your players... I enjoy following teams that have massive potential, and I like them both... I guess, if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, I guess, personally, I like to follow players who've been here longer and I have watched year in and out play... That is just a personal preference, as I'm sure, other cat fans like the all star plays from these high flyers...

If we place a team of 50 year old players against a team of your 50 year old players, we would win... Don't you get it... UK basketball will always be a winner... We have tradition that is hard to explain to an outsider.....

Again, go to the history books... Read about the impossible come from behind wins... The times UK has won it against all odds... ETC... I am not saying these things sarcastically...

I'm sure we will continue to win and compete for championships. We've had 5 different coaches win a title here and they all did it a different way. I'm sure the 6th coach to win a title here will do it different than the others. There will never be another Cal though, just like there's never been another Rupp or Pitino. The Pitino at UL is a shell of the Pitino that was at UK.

The preference for me is to go after top talent, which is not really a 'model' as all coaches do it. When Roy was asked about Cal's recruiting, he basically said he goes after the same players but doesn't get as many. Whether the next coach is as successful as Cal is TBD.

We have won 8 in 110 years surely we can keep that pace up. There will never be another one like Calipari, if you were trying to build the perfect coach for anywhere especially UK he is as close as you could get to accomplishing that. A person like Cal comes along once in a lifetime think Jordan, in my mind the only two chinks in Calipers armour is the relationship with NCAA which has cost him 2-3 championships here and he needs to include more 3-4 year players that can bridge the gap, but thats easy to say and difficult to do. I figure we will go into a swoon when he leaves much like I expect from Duke when K retires, hopefully we get lucky and get a very good coach to replace him. UK certainly would be a very attractive destination and I fully expect Calipari to have a big say in his replacement.

First. I don't think anyone really sticks out.

Second. Hopefully someone can continue what he's doing here.

I'd slow your roll there a little. We weren't UK the vast majority of the time under tubby and certainly not under Billy G.

Settle down, soldier. We have had our down years just like every other blue blood. Don't think we were setting the world on fire during Tubby's last two years followed by the BCG years. (84-52 winning at a 62% clip). That being said, we have many more great years than terrible years, but we aren't invincible like you might like to think.

I'm not looking to pick a fight either but it kinda sounds like you are sick of UK's annual success.

I would be good with that. We don't need the 10th to 12th man on the team being a Micky D All American. We are proving that does not translate into championships.

You can win just as many NCAA titles having one or two OAD a year rather than 5 or more. But we get to brag about all of the NBA players we have. Some people like that more than titles.

I think UK gravitates toward a younger coach who can transition them into the next decade or longer.

I'd guess Sean Miller and Billy Donovan would be on their list. Brad Stevens is probably on everyone's list, but hard to see him leaving the Celtics in the next decade.

This is also at least 3 years away, so we have to expect that there will be a few other up-and-coming names that pop up.

I wonder if someone like Chris Collins or Chris Mack might be considered as well.

The model of the two or three year player means you're going to stockpile a lot of players who have experience but may not ever be more than role players. The Tubby scheme.

I like the talent versus experience and hope some of them stick around for year two or three.

Please no more "Tubby Schemes". We had enough of The Tubby Smith Model for a lifetime. Never again.

I actually thought it was funny. Why are you on this board? Don't you have your own board to post in?
Ahhhh, again you confuse me for thedude1, the Duke fan.

I've been on this board - the KENTUCKY board, and ONLY this board (with stints on the HOB), since 2006. I'm born and raised in Kentucky and have never once visited or posted on any other team's board. Get it straight.

Don't think he was advocating the tubby model. I think it was more or less recruit some talented guys who are the basis of the team and support them with incoming talent.
What champions were composed entirely of freshmen?

I don't think the one-and-done is as much of a "model" per say and it's not exclusive to Cal. I hope that whoever comes after Cal tries to recruit the absolute best players he can get, and if after a year those players are good enough to go pro then they go. If they aren't, they don't. "One-and-done" is simply recruiting the top players in the country. A lot of programs try it but only a handful are able to land the recruits.

I guess what I'm saying is that if our next coach tells the #1 recruit in the country that he can't come to UK because that coach doesn't have a "one-and-done" model, I doubt he lasts long here.

The current UK model is one of having a TON of fun every single year. That model has made so many non-uk fans that I know mad that I can see the steam coming out of their ears. I hope Cal goes til he's 70.

Love Cal and I hope he stays here for another 10 years.
But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want him to change his model just a little bit. I wish we could retain our players longer. I get it, if you're a guaranteed first rounder, you have to go, but the culture right now at UK is one and done and if you're at UK for a second year it's a crime.
Winning with Freshmen is damn near impossible, but Cal has us in the mix every year through extremely hard work.
But he's a much better coach than most realize, if he retained players for more than one year, he would crush it. I mean really good players, not the Derek Willis' or Hawkins type players, top notch players.

Give me a 2 year rule and UK would reel off an obscene amount of titles under Cal.

As far as the next coach, I feel he needs to get his fair share of elite players, he should, this is UK. But I hope the next coach is a passionate X's and O's coach that has an eye for talent and has proven himself on the big stage. That last one is key, don't want a dude that has nothing on the resume, give me a Brad Stephens, I think that guy is the perfect fit for this job and he's young.
By the time Cal hangs it up, BS might be ready to take that spot.
At this time, I don't see any other worthy candidates. Sorry, but Sean Miller needs to not be mentioned here, he's done less with more too often. He's snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory too often when it really counts.

We will still get Mcd's players . Maybe only 1-3 a year but we will still get them. IF we hire another great coach . No one will be Cal IMO as I think he is one of the 3 elite college coaches of the last 20 years but that doesn't mean the guy can't be great.
