Kentucky Basketball - Civil War, March Edition

I'm gonna be honest... nothing short of a championship changes how I feel about Cal at this point. I'll definitely be happy if we make a FF. We have the raw talent and skill for these players to get hot, play well, and take us there. I'll celebrate those players. But then everyone leaves, we rebuild with a bunch of new Freshmen. And I have so little faith in Calipari, and just wonder how many more pitiful regular seasons we have to go through, how many years we fall behind in all time wins, how many years losing our big games, how many years as an also-ran in the SEC.

I take exception to this...

There’s a greater emphasis on toxic whataboutisms than true in-season basketball discourse, everyone more focused on being on the right side of history than what’s actually happening on the hardwood.

I don't know about twitter, because I ditched it 2 years ago, but I see lots of discussion on this board about lineups, defenses and game strategy. Plenty of "hardwood" discussion.

I don’t know why KSR keeps up with this narrative it’s a beloved team. I think fans enjoyed the earlier pace of this team, the high scoring games, even Bradshaw’s return, and Big Z’s debut but overall this team will probably get forgotten pretty quickly short of a title or FF run.

People don’t seem to like Wagner. Edwards has been a bust, so has Bradshaw. Big Z is in Cal purgatory. Sheppard is loved. I think people enjoy Reeves and Rob but this team doesn’t hold a candle to the John Wall team, Brandon Knight team, the ‘15 team or even the ‘14 team.

This team reminds me more like the ‘16 team when it comes to fandom. They have some fan pieces (Ullis & Murray) but overall it’s an okay team when it comes to love from the fan base

Pilgrim is a know nothing attention seeker.
That was exactly my reaction to Pilgrim's piece. Hell ... there's been no middle ground in the fan base for 3 to 5 years, depending on how you define "middle ground." One poster said, "It will take a National Championship for me to regain faith in Calipari." Even if this great group of young kids who are wearing the U.K. uniform this season were to be able to overcome Calipari's utter ineptitude and win a National Championship for U.K., they will have done so in spite of Calipari ! ! ! No credit would be due to Calipari ... none !
Calipari has been a cancer on the U.K. program since 2015. Pilgrim has nothing other than describe the obvious magnitude to which the cancer has metastasized !

I agree with this. I enjoy these kids, more so than the last 5 years, but I can’t say that I love this team. I loved the 92, 96, 98, 12, 15, 17 teams.

I've seen plenty of articles and not one reading how it's time to actually win something or else. It's not like BBN is being greedy, we are smart enough to know better then 10 years of excuses. If dude gets bounced by a pigeon or kangaroo in the first weekend then step aside or we will burn u out. March is Cals worst enemy this year and the poor guy knows it. He's being exposed and it's a damn shame the National MEDIA won't hold his 10 million a year ass to higher standard.

It’s not rocket science, if you win the fans are going be happy. The last 3.5 years have been a steady decline. The years between the last title, FF, SECT title, and SEC regular season title continue to grow and I don’t see any of it changing this year.

People aren’t just upset because we lost to LSU, they’re upset because we’ve seen UK loss the exact same way over and over. This whole wait for March mantra needs to be put to bed. You don’t become a blue blood by stinking up the regular season and praying and hoping the team can figure it by March.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself but I like DJ, Edwards, Bradshaw, they all seem like good kids but somehow they were extremely overrated and that’s not their fault.

I don't dislike any of the players. I don't even know them and they all seem like good kids but in all honesty
this recruiting class was way overrated. The only two that are really 5 star players are Reed and Dillingham.
The others are all about the same. UK was picked 4th or 5th in the conference and that's looks pretty accurate. I would love for this team to get their act together and make a run to the Final Four but I don't think that's going to happen.

I don’t know how old Pilgram is but I suspect his inability to relate the “Cal Must Go” crowd is because he is not old enough to remember the UK basketball of the late 70s 80s and 90s. He clearly doesn’t understand the tradition of UK basketball. Cawood Ledford would be blasting this team right now if he wasn’t rolling over in his grave

I want to win a championship this year because obviously I want to win a championship, AND I think it would give Cal the perfect opportunity to go out on top and transition to his ambassador role at UK. And UK can start fresh with major mojo in the program.

The irony of the two extremes Pilgrim points out is the undeserved, but very high belief in the players by fans on both sides of the proverbial aisle.

March will be a wild ride in BBN. There will be some major reactions to close(coin-flip) games that the tournament is full of.

I think that statement is true. Poke around online enough and you will see people willing to watch their team lose just be vindicated for some stuff they put on the internet.

The civil war is upon us and it’s already a couple years in. The best this board can hope for is a bunch of smart ass rival fans to infiltrate and rile us all up. That May literally be the only thing to unite the online fanbase. The battle lines have been drawn and there is no middle ground allowed.

I don’t recall hearing cawood blast anyone ever.

Good comment but they will probably all leave instead of staying. IMO they’re actually 4 year guys talent wise

I didn't like the article. Pilgram has this I'm above it all and can see things so much clearer than we rubes. Cal is in trouble for one reason and one reason only: he isn't winning enought basketball games. He hasn't been for awhile now. To be comfortable at Kentucky you have to win and win big.Anybody that has watched this team all year knows (if they are honest) this team is going nowhere in March. I suspected it after an overtime win at home and then a loss to tomato cans. This team can't string 3 wins together much less 6 or even 4 in the national tournament. As to wether Cal will return,I suspect he will, and for next season to be the most miserable since probation

when is the last time we won 6 in a roll, I can't remember.

There is not going to be an ambassador role for cal at UK, when cal is done coaching either on his own or by virtue of a buyout there will be a clean break. Uk cannot go out and get a top notch level coach like they will need knowing cal is still part of the program. Only room for one chief in a tribe. Not to mention cal has become a cancer of the program and most everyone wants him gone.

Absolute best case scenario is make a title run and Cal rides off into the sunset

Sure, but what do most of those discussion board threads eventually turn into? If you say something positive about lineups, defense improving, game strategy working - you'll get attacked for being a "Cal lover boy"

If you post negatively about lineups, terrible defense, etc - you're toxic and you're a "Cal hater"

I'm not the biggest Jack Pilgram fan, but the quote you provided is pretty spot-on, in MY opinion

No one is allowed to be critical of anything nowadays or you’re “toxic” or a “hater.”

It’s the world the kids that got participation trophies and orange slices w juice boxes after their soccer games have created.

Just win games. Compete for championships. That’s the expectation. Thats why the person hired, was hired. Do it or leave and bring someone else in that can. Pretty simple really.

UConn has 5 titles in the last 25 years 3 of them doing exactly this. They are definitely in the blueblood conversation. Most of the talking heads say they are now.

Well, we better win a title this season. Cause right now we’re having poor regular seasons and short March runs.
