Unfortunately, we have sucked at basketball for the better part of 7 years now BUT it appears like the Dores are starting to see some progress within the program. Other than ‘23, we really haven’t even played a meaningful game against the Cats in a long long time.

As for Saturday, I really don’t know what to expect. I have watched the Cats play 5 or so games so I’m fairly familiar with your roster. I would characterize y’all as a team with a lot of solid players, no superstars but most everyone is dangerous. I have been very impressed with Mark Pope as a coach both in what he says / how he carries himself and in his ability to get the team to play together and execute in tight games. I am a fan.

Are y’all back to full health with the week off?

As for the Dores, we have a new Coach. Mark Byington came from JMU where he was 32-4 last year including winning at Michigan State and beating Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He’s a very solid coach, smart guy who emphasizes team first mentality and says all the right things. As a Vandy fan, it’s hard not to like this guy.

Jason Edwards is our leading scorer, small guard who is very quick both in movement and release of shot. Can take bad shots but he is fun to watch.

Devin McGlockton is our glue guy and “center” but we really don’t play much in the post. Lots of 5 out, or high post or 4 out 1 in.

AJ Hoggard, transfer from Michigan State is a guy who can win you games or lose you games. We’ve seen both. We function best when he’s driving and distributing primarily.

Jaylen Carey is our only other big. Carey had 14 and 10 vs UTjr but had 6 and 4 (turnovers) vs Bama. He’s young and kinda raw but his body is ridiculous (dad played left tackle for the Dolphins). He’s hit or miss though, some games he is legit looking, others, you want him off the floor.

Tyler Tanner is our lone freshman and is one of the better defensive guards in the country. Only averages 6.4 ppg but is averaging 2.2 steals per game (in only 20 minutes per game). He’s a special player but a freshman so he isn’t relied on for much other than defense.

The rest of the guys are all solid, not great. Tyler Nickel is a decent shooter but can disappear. MJ Collins is a good athlete but can disappear. Grant Huffman is a solid grad transfer PG, who does a lot of the little things. Chris Mañon is another glue guy. High energy, good defensive player, fun to watch but won’t score much.

Overall, I think we’re a solid team who can be very good when we play well. Our formula is to turn it over less than we take it away and we play fast so if we’re making shots, we can be dangerous. We’ve also had a few stinkers where we shot it like doo doo and we weren’t able to overcome that. I think in most years I’d call this team an NCAA Tournament team but the SEC is so good that we may not get to that magical 8-10 mark to make the Dance. Or we might?

Big game Saturday, give me your thoughts or questions.

Also, sorry about the novel.

We better come to play, I know they got beat at Bama kinda bad but they still hit like 14 3’s. We will lose that game if we allow that kinda shooting. Vandy is good and on the road it’s always a hard game. I never enjoy us going there as many a good team has lost.

I hope Carr is otherwise I think you guys win. 😐

Yeah, Carr is a very sneaky good player. He’s one of the guys I have seen that doesn’t necessarily jump off the page but he grabs rebounds, defends well and tends to make big shots. Definitely an argument that he’s the Cat’s most important player.

Rebounding isn’t his strength, but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the most dependable scoring options we have when things bog down. He has good touch around the basket, has good length and is good at using his body to position for easy buckets. Has a deceptively effective head fake and pump fake game

A big part of this is offensive rebounding. The best 3-pt shot in basketball is the kickout 3 on an offensive rebound - the shooter is facing the hoop already, feet set, in rhythm - the Cats inability to lockdown the defensive glass is ONE of the reasons opponents shoot so well against us from 3

Somehow, when he plays good, we look good, when he plays bad, we struggle

Vanderbilt is a tough place to play, that court is set up unlike any other in the SEC, I thought it was a sure win, until I have watched your team in action...we better be ready from the outset if we get down like Tennessee did early it will be curtains. I do like walls coach good luck this season...except Saturday. We should win but that's what I thought at Georgia.

One of my kiddos got me tix to this one as we live in Nashville... Looking forward to seeing the cats in person and pulling for Pope.

Agree... Over the years I've seen a lot of the memorial magic. I'd love to watch live Brea or Robinson get hot... Or Butler pull a Louisville type performance.

Looking forward to it... Vandy playing well and hungry... Gotta bring the A-game

Hey FBoss! You know how we usually rely on Ill. wildcat for our pregame insights, but you are uniquely qualified, well liked, and a great enough mind to give it to us from my native nashvilles fav teams perspective!

After all the years I lived back in nashvegas, all those games watching the Dores' miserable gym magic, it's a blast from the old past to see a Renaissance for Vandy hoops this year, after the dark ages.

Totally appreciate your assessment, I share it. I think we both got great news coaches that will re-establish candy (err .. vandy... I'm going to blame that one on my auto correct 😸) as well as keeping the Vols as our preeminent rivals in this league.

At least, it'll always be that way for me!

Incredibly interesting year in so many ways.

Vandy really has made huge strides and clearly seems better equipped than in recent memory for a nice season.

I'm interested if you think Vandy can maintain this direction, no back slippage, and hold onto your new coach? It seems to me that Vanderbilt can, should, and will , do everything possible to maintain it.

This isn't a game scouting report, this is you providing your opinion on your team only. You don't do any team-to-team or player-to-player comparisons, nor do you provide a prediction on the game outcome.

We need our on ILWildcat to do his true, unbiased scouting report! :)

Hard to know because Pope hones in on the number 1 and number 2 needs to work on in practice so there is improvement from not spreading the net too wide. We improved on the number one thing last week but he still wants it to continue to get better. The number two thing Pope thinks they can get much better each week. Pope is a technical coach that is very smart and figures out ways in practice to improve. We will see how much a full week of practice on these things looks like Saturday.

This game is massive with @UT to follow. UK is currently the 9 seed in the SEC tourney, they cannot afford to lose this game and fall further behind in the SEC. Cats HAVE to win against Vandy
Any game(especially road game) is a big win in the SEC this season. This is a game we should be able to win with our B+ game ,as you say we can't afford to drop this one and be in position for a decent seed in the SECT.

Thanks, Runt! Good to see familiar faces here.

Can we maintain the direction of the program? I think so, NIL and transfer portal is good for us because we never cheated and paid players. Now we can pay players and it’s not only legal but encouraged. We have a lot of wealthy donors who were “stiffarmed” in the past by VU Administration but they can’t really stop it now.

We have SEC money and the rules favor us for the first time in history so I’d be sort of surprised if we couldn’t keep Byington here and continue on the current path.

That said, who knows? We are led by nerds who favor politics at times over logic so nothing would surprise me.

We do like Byington, pretty confident that he can get things rolling and so far, he’s been supported well.

Yeah that is one of the perks of being at a prestigious university. Lots of rich alumni.
