Kentucky at Indiana

I stated earlier this week that our record looked better on paper than in reality, due to several highly improbable late inning comebacks against really weak teams, e.g., Bellarmine, West Mich and High Point. Tonight confirms my thought (at least to me anyway)

But I also have said we had 36 games that really mattered, SEC, TCU, Indiana and Louisville, and we are 2-2 in those games. One bad loss in baseball, especially mid week, is not like losing to a MAC team in football. But I think we all fear what could be a long long conference slog.

Well, that was ugly. Indiana wins 20-7. Some fun stats

~UK struck out 15 times.

~Indiana had 23 hits. 9 hits and 6 homeruns. How does that even happen.

~Indiana scored in every inning.

~UK 1-4 hitters: 4-19 with 8 strikeouts.

SEC play is going to fun.

UK ERA before today: 4.65

Let's see what happens after giving up 20, and I think almost all, if not all, were earned.

It's not an official rule. It's something coaches agree upon beforehand. I doubt either coach expected it to be needed tonight and neither expected this trouncing.
I’d like to see it as a permanent rule. We might need that this weekend to save the embarrassment

I'm torn. Tonight was real bad but it just takes 1 or 2 innings. Like UK putting up 11 on WMU. It was 5-5 before that 1 inning. Game ended before WMU got a chance again. But sometimes it's good to throw the towel.

It’s 10 runs after 7. So at that point in the game, it’s not impossible but highly unlikely to come back there. I’d like to see it be a rule.

College baseball is weird. It's unlikely but we saw UK put up a 4 spot pretty easily to start this one. So, those runs can come quickly. But this wasn't one of those games.

Those are unbelievable stats. I mean that’s just bad all around. If we don’t hit we’re going to get beat with this pitching staff.

We should be mad our coach sucks and has taken this program even further down the s***hole.
I think we can all agree it’s been downhill from year one. Definitely underperformed in year two and have been about average for UK when there was zero administration support.

I want to hold onto hope. I really do. And yeah, baseball is weird like this. And it’s a midweek game so that’s a whole other thing in itself. But what scares me is this team has been playing with fire all season. And I feel like it’s starting to creep up and bite them. The SEC is a gauntlet. UK won’t have these opportunities.

On a side note, what does this do to the RPI?

Not horrible. Dropped 11 points to 120. It's a Q2 loss. The bad ones are the Q3 and Q4 losses.

Losing is one thing. Losing by giving up 20 earned... that's another entirely. Inexcusable. This week will be telling once again. How do we respond? Get embarrassed... do we fold? Do we fight back? Do we put it behind us? It's not going to be easy to prove it was a fluke when facing the Hawgs.

The UK pitching staff is way below par, we've seen clues of that from the get-go. Reason is probably 2-fold: Pitching behind in the count and lacking plus fastballs. I'm afraid we're going to see a steady diet of double figure runs allowed until the staff can start getting ahead in the count and the recruitment of harder throwers.

I've been a Debbie downer all offseason, then was feeling pleasantly surprised. Like maybe this team could find a run and make a little push.

Last night brought me crashing back to Earth. Arkansas is a good program. Winning the series in Fayetteville would allow me to just sweep Indiana under the rug and chalk it up.

My fear is we're going to get a rude preview of what awaits us each weekend in conference play.

That’s where I am. After the TCU series I was like alright. Here we go. But as someone said else said, I think it may have been Comebak, in the tough games, UK is 2-2.

I set through listening to that debacle and couldn’t get myself to turn it off. I was really taken back about how bad UK got beat. The season starts Friday. And I’m not liking where Kentucky is at right now.

Very discouraging loss, but it's just one loss and in a midweek game. This weekend is a better barometer. Arkansas is a great program, but they've struggled a bit this year (though they usually come back and win over weak teams even when they trail most of the game). If we can take a game and not get killed in the other two, then we may be OK. If we get swept and let them score a shit ton of runs in while doing it, then this may be a loooongggg year.

We usually have at least one Arkansas fan drop in. I've personally always enjoyed that because they've always been respectful and added great insight. Other fanbases not so much.

Maybe it was @ThreeHogNight ?

Arkansas is one school in the SEC I can cheer for in all other sports. I’m not sure I’ve had a bad run in with a fan of theirs.

You’re right. It’s just a midweek game. But there is a deeper issue with this program than just the Indiana game. You look at the record (14-4) and it’s hard not to get excited about that. But then you look closer at the schedule and the results. It is very easy to say UK could have at least 4 more losses against some really bad teams. I’m not playing the what if game here but the come from behind games they won rarely happen against good competition.

Hello Cats, yes, it's baseball season and the Hogs are loaded in the polls and on paper, but have really struggled hitting at times and have not been as dominant so far this season as in the last couple of years.

I will try to chime in when I can, but with this being my very favorite 4 days of college basketball, I am disappointed that it happens to coincide with SEC Baseball opening weekend.

Good luck to Kentucky baseball, I hope that you win every SEC series................starting next weekend!

Yeah we (Arkansas) really haven't played anyone of note so far, except for Stanford which we lost, so I'm not sure what to make of us quite yet. Up until the last week our hitting was horrible and so far this year our pitching has been fairly solid which is the opposite of what most of us expected coming into the year. Hitting has gotten a lot better recently but playing teams like Illinois-Chicago and Grambling isn't a good barometer.

Should be a good test this weekend. Fun time of year with spring football, the NCAA Tournament and SEC baseball ramping up.

We too have experienced the opposite of what we thought. Thought pitching would be an anchor and that hitting would need to catch up. Instead, we are 12th in the nation in team batting average, tied for 8th in doubles, top 30 in home runs. We've done that playing an extremely poor schedule, other than TCU and maybe Indiana, but still big numbers.

Our offense gets somewhat shut down at times, but tends to come alive against bullpens and late in games. Not sure if that is due to facing poor opponents with poor bullpens, or if we can actually hit.

Pitching is a nightmare. Obviously gave up the 20 spot to Indiana, but starting pitching has been poor, even on the weekends and we've won most games through hitting and not really through pitching.
