we get delusional damn near every year because we start off so damn hot and then run into reality. We ought to demand better
Not counting the bowls, we had 4 7-win seasons in the Brooks era. In 2006, we lost to #13 UL in the first game. In 2007, we beat #9 UL in the second game and #1 LSU in the 7th game, which justified the 'delusion'. By 2008, UL had dropped off, so we were 4-0 and then lost to #2 Bama, but were never ranked. In 2009, we played #1 UF and #3 Bama in the 3rd and 4th games of the season.
In the Stoops era, we started winning 7 or more games in 2016. We lost to SMU in the first game, then unranked UF next. In 2017 (This is probably the timeframe you were referring to), we won 3 to start, lost to UF by 1, then won 2 more before the rails fell off at Miss St. Still won 7 though. Similarly, in 2018, we beat UF in game 2 and #14 MSU in game 4, but lost to A&M in the 5th game. Still went 9-3 and were ranked top 15-20 all year. In 2019, we lost to #9 UF in game 3, then to unranked MSU and unranked USC. Ended with 7-5 and were never ranked. In 2021, we started off 6-0, but, again, beat USC, #10 UF, and LSU to get there. Still won 9 games. This year we beat #12 UF in game 2 and now #16 MSU in game 7.
All-in-all, I'm not really seeing delusion. Maybe in 2008 and 2017. The team justified the hype in 2018 and 2021. 2007 could go either way I suppose. BTW, you are going to really hate next year's schedule ~ Ball St, EKU, Akron, Vandy to start the year.
