Kenpom Season Prediction- Kentucky

If we can be anything above .500 in the sec, I’d consider that a successful season for this team

Not claiming we'll win the the SEC, but I just don't see us dropping 10 conference games. Even if the conference is really good, 10 is a lot.
I agree but, I can see us losing several games. As many as 13 total as the high point and I think 8 losses will be the low number. I think Duke will get us. Possibly Clemson on their floor. Gonzaga in Washington. I am unsure about the Cardinals andOhio State. As far as conference foes I think Florida and A&M (may get us) . They are big games. Alabama is much better and, we play them twice. At Ole Miss will be dangerous. Arkansas in Lexington will be fun,Tennessee (2) games, Texas, OU and Auburn are all very capable of winning. The SEC is going to be a struggle . Obviously it will be a major win for Pope if he can make it to the NCAAs. We all need to stay supportive. Pre SEC tournament I think we may stand with multiple losses. I will be happy to be wrong but I am not as high on this group as most of you on this board.

Assuming that's about a third or so of the season in, do you know what sort of analyses they do to take into account the low sample size? We don't get into the sweet spot of 30 minimum data points until the season is basically over.
Actually about 1/6 to 1/4 of the season.

They each do it differently. Many will use last year’s metrics, probably conference or opponent adjusted. For UK they may be using the BYU team metrics from last year. They would also use last year’s stats for players, with assumptions about minutes and FR.

When I ran mine it was basically a giant probability matrix (330x330 if 330 teams) solely based on the outcomes of games (who won, by how much, in OT?, where at, and when), and I would run the model 6 times, at which point you started seeing not much movement up or down by teams. But I would wait until most everyone had played 6 games. Each time it would run it would fill more cell in the matrix, such that the first run gave a probability for team X vs every team they played, then the 2nd run would add a probability vs teams their opponents had played, and the 3rd run would add for team opponents of their opponents had played, and so on.

SEC is going to be stacked this year. We need to do work in the pre-conference part of the schedule. Offense won't be a problem with this team but, defense might very well decide some games. We can't outscore everyone we run up against. Do we have guys that can break opponents down and get their own shots when the game is close? We are going to find out very soon. Should at least be fun though!

Yeah i think anyone making these rankings and predictions are just being reserved. A wait-and-see approach..

Which is still funny, because this sort of thing only applies to UK. Any other new coach just gets the benefit of the doubt it seems. Scheyer, Hubert Davis... even BYUs first time coach gets more respect than Pope at UK lol.

It's pretty clear that the directive from ESPN and the NCAA is that they don't want UK winning.. it's not one of their academia programs, and it's not Duke or UNC or Kansas. Therefore we're the biggest threat.

Yes, because ESPN hates money.

So they went to Kenpom and said why don’t your underrank the team with the biggest, loudest fanbase that spends the most money, so maybe their fans will care less and they’ll watch less?

Next thing we’ll hear is that George Soros is funneling money to anti UK organizations 😂

All you have to do is look at the way the NCAA has levied its punishments over the last 50 years, for you to see that there are some protected programs, and other ones that are used to make an example of. We are not protected.

The thing with conspiracy theories is the sheer number of people who would have to keep their mouths shut for them to happen. Countless pairs of criminals have gone down because one of the two couldn’t stay quiet. But I’m sure in this case, everyone at the NCAA, ESPN, Kenpom, CBS, SI, AP, etc are all scheming to screw us and none of them have every said a word about it. That would take an amount of money they doesn’t currently exist to keep that many people quiet.

It doesn't need to be some wide-spread organization-wide cover up. It could simply be a handful of folks at the top who simply choose to not look into why a player like Zion was living in a mansion.

Not EVERYTHING is a conspiracy.. but you're foolish if you think every single agency out there is operating 100% on the up and up lol.

KenPom always begins the year with a baseline that is based on the previous season's numbers and returning players. The problem here is obvious. There are no returning players. And this system is not even the same as what Pope coached at BYU, and only includes one player who play for Pope in that system. So, for UK, the numbers can't be accurate. It's really just an educated guess, and the factors included here are too numerous to even make a good guess. Even if you took the players' numbers for other teams, how can you predict how they will work out in a completely different system, with completely different players, completely different teammates, and a completely different coach? In short, these numbers mean nothing.

But I hasten to add- I like what I have seen of this team. UK fans know good basketball when they see it. I'm ready to see what this team can do.
