Kenny Payne as Head Coach?

First time I ever hear that. Thank you for sharing. Made this worthless thread worth the read.
I don't hate the idea of a Kenny Payne or Orlando Antigua but only if a better hire can not be made. If we strike out with the big boys for some reason like when we had to hire BCG then a Payne type can be hired. The most important thing for whoever we hire as coach is that they like Cal realize the most important part of recruiting and coaching is hiring good assistants and he hires the next Coach O's and KP's.
It would truly be insane to hire any of our assistants as HC's. None of them are prepared or cut out for this job. They will never be looked at, they will never be approached, they will never be asked. No one close to the program even discusses this. None that I've ever talked to.
I wish the board would stop with this and it's no disrespect intended. We are the premier basketball program in the land. This fallacy that we werent getting a coach past Calipari is just that. A falsehood.
izzo would have accepted this job. As would others had they been approached. I don't know where this "no one wanted it" crap comes from. Billy Donovan nearly left a title team on the table (back to back) to come here.
We do not have any assistants that will ever be UK coaches. I know everyone wants to continue Cals run here under a new name, but cal has never had those types of caliber coaches on staff. He goes after guys for a reason. For example, Robic is his housekeeper and tape guy. He's not intended to be anything else. Payne is being groomed for something small.
Orlando would be the closest but he's not anywhere near Caliapri or UK's league.
When cal leaves we will go outside to make the hire. Just the way it is.
Just like last time, MB will get rope and everything he does will be proofed and the decision won't be his in the end. The way he's managed our basketball program, I can't believe anyone would want him getting close to the next hire.
Not sure why you quoted me, because I said the only way we hire an assistant type is we strike out with the all the major players. Do I think that will happen? No, but it did just 9 years ago. Was Billy G somewhat of an up and comer on the coaching scene? Yes, but people who dilute themselves into thinking Billy was hired for any reason other than he beat UL at Rupp in the round of 32 and we got turned down by every major player we asked just isn't seeing the truth. Which by the way I'm not saying you are that person.
As far as Cal goes, we only ended up with him because he was tainted and he knew if he reached out to UK in our biggest time of need maybe ever and sold us the golden goose it was going to be his only chance ever to get to UK, UNC, Duke, or Kansas. Mitch didn't pick him or make the hire, the RJ Corman(RIP) and Joe Craft's of the world made that hire, the UK name made that hire. Actually as far as Mitch is concerned, he is a nice, nerdy, churchy, scholastic, kind of guy. That is reason he has made such good hires everywhere but basketball and football. Track, rifle, tennis, field hockey, etc... those aren't big business, there aren't sharks swimming in those waters. Basketball and Football, that's big business that slick deals, wine em, dine em, 69 em. That ain't Mitch, not his fault he just can't be that guy, not in his DNA.

Cats 78 versus UK 78. Meaning Payne is part of the recruiting process and in fact may be the lead. If we hired someone else the question becomes would the recruits stay? I know we all believe Cal won't leave but now today a day after my original post, there is a new post about Cal's asking price of 120 million and ten years. Where is this coming from? I think Cal would be insane to leave but again my post was hypothetical. Fear factor for some I guess. And, I still don't see very good answers perhaps because there is none. But, let me ask again, how do we keep the recruits if the worst was to happen?
120/10? Is that anything like a triple double or a quadruple double? I think so maybe more the latter than the former.... Why not throw out a figure? What can it hurt? Note: I did not read the 120/10 article and have no idea of the verbiage but, why not?
Short story...The last time I went looking for car to lease...I was trading in an older Audi that looked great, but it needed between 7500-9000 on the engine.
Skip, way ahead...to the part of "what do I have to do to get you in this car today?". I say I am only looking, but if you can get me that car for 24 months at under 200/mn with 12,0000 miles per year, nothing out of pocket and no maintenance costs, I will do it. Damn, if I didn't drive home in a new car.

What the OP is suggesting would be short-sited. Looking only at the next season. Even is KP is a good recruiter, part of the tools he has available is being able to tell the players that he would be playing for Calipari, and point at Calipari's success of getting players to the NBA. He couldn't do that for himself.
UK, as a (the) premier program, would require a PROVEN head coach, who can recruit, and coach, and manage the media circus that is BBN. Payne would not have proven himself yet. I think Antiqua would need at least 5 years to prove himself in a head coach role. So I think we would have to look at the top available external candidates, whenvever (this spring/summer, or in 8 years) that happens.

Agreed. How he got where he got being that way is mind boggling. And yea, Mitch will allow us to be completely mediocre before he swims won't be sharks. It's why I want goin gonzo.
No, as I understand KP is supposed to coach the big guys and it seems to me that several of our big men lately haven't really progressed like they could or should have. Of course, no head coaching experience would automatically knock him out of the running. Would be great to see one of the former Cats have a chance but Brad Stevens would be hard to beat. A coach who really wants to recruit the elite players will benefit enormously from being at Kentucky.
Obviously Brad Stevens is the number 1 coach, but what other than the fact we are UK fans makes us think we can get him? He is viewed by NBA gm's as the best young coach in the league, and is also viewed that way by every AD. Is UK literally just the best job period in all of basketball and that's how we get Brad? Cause other than that it doesn't make sense.
I highly doubt Barnhart is even the athletic director the next time Kentucky hires a basketball coach. Just don't see him around much longer.

Year before - Randle went #7
Year before that - Noel went #6 with a torn ACL
Year before that that - AD went #1 and Jones went 18th
Year before that that that - Kanter went #3 and Jorts went #45
What "big man" coach has come remotely close to matching this success?
most of these players were highly rated coming in. KAT had the skills coming in as did Randle and Davis. Other than hustle I didn't see WCS make that much progress in the skill department. Noel didn't get to play enough for a lot of progress, besides as so many said many NBA picks are on potential. Otherwise Skal wouldn't be rated so highly at this time. I will stick with my opinion as I am sure you will too. GO CATS
Oh I agree with you, don't have a clue if we could get him or not. If we ever need a coach though I'm just saying he would be hard to beat in my opinion.
I dont agree that you can say our bigs havent developed becasue of Skal and Lee - both of whom were 5 stars yet say all the others that did were simply highly ranked.
WCS wasnt. KAT obviously developed greatly. AD developed.
Not sure what your baseline is or how you can dismiss some but not others with the same stars?
I don't even like to think about this, but one day Cal will leave. With that being said, the first call made would be to Brad Stevens. I'd also look at Archie Miller, I think he could do well here. JMO.
The ones like KAT and AD were already skilled to a great degree, Lee and Skal not so much. Don't know how to say it any simpler.
So every big man that was successful KP had nothing to do with. Lee and Skal however are the only ones that count?
Maybe you can break it down even more for me?
Skal has struggled, but these officials also just let dudes push him whenever they want. That's at least the dozenth time its happened without a call this season.
