If a nightmare were to happen where Cal does leave for the Nets, would promoting Kenny Payne to head coach be the right move to keep all our super recruits? He always seems to be in the pictures. Plus, he certainly has been around on the staff long enough. I hate my own topic and yes I know Cal isn't leaving......but....... Thoughts?

Schools in the position Kentucky is should require a better resume. There'd be better options.

Top level assistant.....but would be a bit of a reach as hc at this point at this level.

It would be like throwing him to a pack of hungry wolves. I like KP but whoever follows Calipari will have huge shoes to fill.

You all really believe Cal would leave behind maybe his best class? He's probably more excited to coach Fox and Monk than we are to watch them.

No, and no for Antigua so let's not go there.

Kenny Payne has never even been offered a decent job as HC.

We are UK. We don't hire maybes, and if that SOB AD of ours does it again, we need to run him out

And before someone says "we hired Joe b" (because we all know it's coming) please rememeber he was offered several really good positions. At one point he was ready to leave and take another HC job if things didn't happen for him. Rupp didn't make it easy on Joe.

No there's no way. For one, IF Cal did leave us for the NBA (which I don't see happening) he'd most likely keep the same assistant coaches. For two, Kenny doesn't have the resume or the experience to be our head coach. But then again with Mitch Barnhart being in charge nothing would surprise me at this point.

He's actually not in charge of basketball operations.....

A little fact that slips everyone's mind.

No, he's a great assistant with Cal right now but has zero head coaching experience and there's a major difference between the two. Add in the fact that we're talking Kentucky, and it would be murder for the poor guy. He needs head coaching experience somewhere else and have good success before ever being considered for the UK job. He's no BCG, but you have to think how that guy hurt our program without having the proper credentials to coach at UK. I don't want to go through something like that again and would hate to put a class act like Payne through that kind of pressure with a first time head coaching position.

Why even bring this up three games into league play?

A bit of a correction on the point about Joe being ready to leave. He did leave. Took the St Louis job. UK chased after him and made their offer and the rest as they say is history.

Right that's what I was getting at.

Your right but he does have a say so as to who gets hired as our coaches to a certain degree.

You could be right and I agree hate scary. The last guy he had a full Hand in hiring was Gillispie. Probably the single worst hire in our history.

That was also a much different situation back then. You didn't have the choices you would now. UK would have their choice. It wouldn't be like stepping in when Tubby left and people were scared to take the job. Moot point anyway, doubt Cal is going anywhere.

Thankfully the Nets fired their guy mid-season. I don't think Cal would ever bail mid-season, and I imagine Nets get their next guy before April.

Not likely to need a coach, but if you do, go after Brad Stevens. He's probably about at the point where he is realizing that he would rather be a college coach, and you guys owe the Celtics some pay back. He is a great college coach, and would be scary good at UK.

If Cal left mid season due to an unforseen circumstance, or just screwing us over, then he'd be an obvious interim choice.

If Cal left and it was time to weigh candidate options he shouldn't be on any short, or long, list.

That's what was said when Joe B and Tubby left. It's tougher than you think.

That's true to a degree, but Peavy is not hiring the next basketball coach at UK. It will be Mitch and ultimately President Capilouto.

Robic has been with Cal for like 20 years...his right hand man....i could comment on a thread and say "the"...and you guys would say see he is a troll....you guys need serious help

Robic was a GD head coach and totally sucked bro. Cal would laugh at you for even suggesting it, and honestly, Robic would probably be scared sh*tless and say no. He's with cal because cal WANTS him and nothing more. He's not a hidden Phil Jackson stuffed away. He's VCR coach and babysitter. Smfh...

damn....

Well he didn't make the last hire. And I don't suspect some of those same people will let him make the next if he steps of line. Cal wanted Peevy for a reason.

The fact that Cal wanted someone else to oversee basketball while he is here will have exactly zero to do with who oversees a coaching search should he ever leave. To think the AD wouldn't have a significant role would be wrong, to say the least, in my opinion.

Brad Stevens leaving the celtics is a daily post on Peegs and should probably stay with that bunch...
