Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speaks on OAD

Both college and pro basketball would be better products if that were the case.
Maybe so, but it would mean fewer years for the league to profit off of pre-prime superstars, and the money makes the decisions.

Ok, so Kareem played how many years at UCLA?. I know he sat out his freshman year. He was, is broke(filed for bankruptcy). He has no legs to stand on to make statements like that, regardless of where you stand on the opinion

Horse left the barn decades ago.

In an ideal world, he's right. But this isn't an ideal world, and to expect the players that the NBA covets, guys with incredibly marketable skills, to wait to profit from those skills until they're 21 is pretty much a completely unrealistic, unreasonable idea.

If the NBA somehow got the Player's Union to play along with the idea, you still wouldn't see a big percentage of the best players hanging around the college game for 3 years. Those guys would find a way to get paid. There's just too much money involved for any kind of forced amateurism to be a realistic solution.

Wonder how much college bball he watches>? Maybe saw that this was UCLAs last good opportunity in the near future and flailed.

Going bankrupt doesn't mean your broke nor that you are flawed beyond talking about this subject. I know a guy who declared bankruptcy six times. He still owns a golf course in Florida and is president of the United States.

Jabaar claimed it in 1987 because of a bad financial advisor. He still owned million dollar homes in California and Hawaii 30 years after the fact.

Also, people who make mistakes are often the people you should listen to the most.

how come most of the people who want the age rule raised are old people who already made their money?

It's like the Cal 30 for 30. A bunch of 65 year old white dudes in $5,000 suits talking about how college basketball should be about education.

Kareem might be the GOAT, but he's wrong and sounds out of touch.

Dave Ramsey, well-known financial adviser, also filed bankruptcy. He freely admits it too. Like him or not, he has helped many people move to financial freedom.

This old man hates the idea of telling kids they can't play until 21. Why do that?
Tennis. Baseball. Golf. Hockey. Soccer.
Makes zero sense (to me) unless you want to rob the Kid of his right to earn $$ so you can be entertained by College Basketball.

This is so condescending and racist.

I know many black people where I'm from who hate this system and would love a 3 year rule. To pretend black people are all about money and a quick exit is terrible. There are many that promote the other side. They don't all think alike.

Just like all white people dont think alike.

Kareem has decades of experience and his opinion on the matter hold a lot more weight than anyone here. To suggest he's an old bum who is bitter and doesn't know what he's talking about is true arrogance.

Your point goes to the reality of people like Zuckerberg or Jobs. Both dropped out of school to persue careers and financial gain. How can you deny anyone that right?
However, leagues, like the NFL, NBA, MLBPA, have rights too and if they set age limits to stop the silliness of Kwame Brown situations, I get it.

The NBA should draft right out of high school for to play in the NBA or a D League team. A player not drafted or choosing to go to College should then have to wait 2 years before eligible for another NBA draft. Of course a player could choose to play in Europe at any time.

My position isn't legal rights as much as fairness to Kids. From the cheap seats where I sit, the Kobe's/Lebron's + AD's (one-and-done) trump the Kwame's.

"I know many black people where I'm from "

Do ya? Do you know a lot of black people who "hate the system" lol

And he wasn't being racist in any way...

I'm old enough to know the freshman didn't play era. Not old enough to have observed it but at least learn of it. Thanks nonetheless.

So curious: why'd you have to throw the "white" into that? There are no 65 year old blacks that think that? Kareem just proved that.

Kinda racist, right?

Yea you dip. I know plenty of black guys that would prefer any system but this one. I'm from Memphis, not the stix of Mississippi.

He labled a group of people by their skin color, that's classic racism.

If I were to say why is it always Younger black people that devalue an education, that would be racist. Just because you feel comfortable bashing one group over the next doesn't make you brave and doesn't mean you're not acting racist.

I would like to see it, where if you sign with a college team, then you have to give a two year commitment.

But, you could also go straight to the NBA out of high school.

I think everyone would be satisfied with this scenario

Kwame Brown was just a bad job of evaluation by the Wizards, No different from any other first round bust. At least it worked out great for Brown. He signed nearly $60 million in contracts and still has a reported net worth of $30 million.

Yeah, but he didn't earn it.

I know, and that's on Washington, as well as I believe seven other teams who took a flyer on him after he left Washington. My point is that Brown should be set for life, and there have been other huge busts as well, several of which played in college or came from Europe.

The only place race was mentioned was in reference to the Cal documentary. Did you watch it? That's who said those things.

Maybe you're a snowflake.[laughing] Isn't that how these discussions work?

Did those people express those feelings in Cal's 30 for 30? Good grief.

Maybe one day we white folks will have a fair shake in this country if you keep fighting the good fight. Look for more places to find an argument.

Or are you also upset that some of those suits were worth $6,000?

Ok son lol. Definitely wasn't racist at all, but people perceive things in different ways sometimes (even if they're wrong )

Agree to disagree .

I love the classic "I know a lot of black people
/ have a lot of black friends " (you don't )

Actually, your post was more stereotypical than any come to think of it :)

What is your old username? You sure seem to know a ton about people here for a guy that joined the board Friday.

Not a snowflake. I just like consistency. Labeling people by their skin color is racist, even if it seems accepted and easy for certain groups at the time. That's how it becomes dangerous.

Are you really gonna justify this by saying "well espn only showed white guys"? Yea, espn wouldn't portray white guys in a negative light, ever.

Come on Gonzo, you shouldn't have said it.
