JQ comparison - Jason Parker?

Parker was not a shot blocker. He had T-Rex arms like Randolph Morris.

JQ has the potential to be a 4 block/game guy. He averaged almost 3 blocks/game last year as a 17 year old.

For those of you old enough to remember Jason Parker, how do you think JQ’s game compares to his? Roughly the same size, animals near the basket, great rebounders. JQ seems to be a better shot blocker. Ironically, Parker tore his ACL while at UK and never came back I don’t think.
JQ is an inch or 2 taller than Parker & a better shot blocker. Parker might have been the most physical player to ever play here. The way he would abuse the rim on his dunks, you would have thought that the rim had stole his bicycle.

About the only similarity is their physical frame. Their games are VERY different.

This. He struggled to score over size because his arms were little.

Him blowing his knee dancing before madness was a blow. Talent across the board but some absolute knuckleheads.

Jason Parker trivia:

He won the North Carolina High School Tournament on the floor of the Dean Dome in March, 1999.

Then the next December he beat UNC-Cheats on the same floor as part of the Kentucky Wildcats team after the Cheaters erroneously failed to qualify him by miscalculating his high school transcripts.

If only they'd got him on campus! He'd be Dr. Jason Parker today -- probably at least the head of the Swahili Language center...
The issue was far more complex than simply UNC “miscalculating his high school transcripts”.

I went inti detail on it in the following thread from 2019.

Really interesting Jason Parker thread you have going here. I honestly forgot (or maybe never knew) all the drama surrounding his arrival in Lexington. Here’s a Greensboro news article from the UNC perspective- Daugherty actually wrote a letter to the fans asking them not to boo him or his family.

I remember being devastated when Jason was kicked off the team. On the heels of Carruth, Allison (my favorite cat, RIP), Jules, and Chuck all getting in trouble, it seemed like nothing but bad news for Tubby those days. Even Fitch had an incident in Atlanta that kept him out of a brutal SECT loss iirc. Then everything came together with that magical 03 run. Really the whole run we had from 03-05 is underappreciated. Crazy to think about adding a junior/senior Jason Parker to those squads.

The player who played the most like Patrick Ewing at UK was Anthony Davis. Specifically when Ewing was at Georgetown.

Quaintance isn't as good facing up at this point but part of that is the age difference but I'd say he's got a lot of traits that Chris Webber had in HS leading up to him going to Michigan. Age has to be factored in too-we're not talking about the mature Webber in Ann Arbor--we're talking when he was a JR/SR in HS.
Ewing was not nearly as athletic as Davis.

You boys are throwing some really big comparisons out there.

I’m honestly just thrilled with the wingspan, the defensive tenacity, and the fact that he wants to rip the backboard down rather than flipping it up weakly. ALL upgrades vs our 5 last year. If he can also pass well, its a major upgrade!

Not sure how old you are, but Ewing at Georgetown was very much like AD was at Kentucky. How they were built and moved. So many think of the guy in the NBA especially when Pat Riley brought in "Force" Basketball, everyone yoked up lifting and mass/strength mattered as much as anything. But in College, Ewing was tall/thin/athletic.

Hes more AD than Parker if we're just going UK players. He's a stronger slightly less talented/ skilled AD.

Yep, and even that’s an understatement. Parker never even attempted a single three despite starting every game here. And he only shot around 39 percent from the FREE THROW line.

Dude was one helluva physical specimen. Played kinda like a mini-Shaq in the paint. But he was utterly useless with the ball on the perimeter.

If someone says he was 6'5, I wouldn't pushback.

Long arms though.

I believe both are god awful at free throws but JQ is way more skilled than Parker. Both try to rip the rim off when they dunk
You know, Quaintance is going to have a ton of time where shooting FTs is basically all he can really do to practice on the court. He really should be shooting FTs so much his arms are sore.

I very vaguely remember Desmond on the UK team, but I do remember the Team Turmoil days under Tubby. Desmond had some real demons, and really tried to make something of himself.

I remember his college career well. He moved robotically compared to Davis. Ewing was great but he was bigger and played intelligent defense. He had better than average quickness and jumped well. He was very good at using his body to create space for the hook shot as well. I still say big separation between he and Davis athletically. Alonzo Mourning would be a closer comparison for AD. I think AD moved better than him as well.

Good thing you are a UK fan because your Gtown analogies are awful.

I'm also teasing and not serious.

AD was one of the most gifted players at any level..ever. He was a guard in HS but grew several inches so had guard skills in a big frame. Not many should ever be compared to him but JQ is older, very skilled, similar size but far better strength, at this point in careers. It's not a huge stretch to compare them but gimme AD all day long. That said, JQ looks like a difference maker. I hope we can keep him around for a couple of years but if he stays healthy, next season is likely his last at the college level. Can ya'll imagine having AD for a 2nd season? Wow! I do love the way JQ attacks the rim. We need BG to step up, mature just a tad but be more agressive. Even with the signing of the Croation Sensation, BG can really be a big part of how we do next season. A couple of bigs, BG and JQ, with a bit of an attitude and that get angry at the rim, will be huge for us. The only thing I don't like about most euro bigs is they mostly are not aggressive enough. I haven't seen much of him yet but three bigs that stay mad at the rim sounds good to me.

Looks like Pope is checking all the boxes this time around. Bigger, stronger and faster, and more aggressive, pretty much everywhere. We need a Bledsoe type of combo guard too. Needs a good shot but doesn't have to be great. Just strong, fast and dependable. Rebounds will come from every spot on the team, it looks like to me. Love how the roster is shaping up but really want BG to stay, too.
Everyone worried about guys like BG, Noah and Perry leaving...but they will benefit more than anyone by having better players on the court with them that make the game easier for them. Especially Perry.
He needs to live in the weight room and in the gym this off season with focus on strength and lateral quickness on both sides of the ball. Garrison needs more strength as well as just getting more comfortable. If he adds strength. I think he builds confidence quickly. I think that's what he's missing most. Noah, some of the same...lose the baby fat and work on lateral quickness. He's got the tools to make a big jump next season.
Boy, when I think about the returning pieces, how much they can improve and the transfers that are significant improvements everywhere...man, I get excited about next season...and I haven't even mentioned Chandler, who has the second highest ceiling of all returning players, yet. Again, weight room for him too. Oweh was our best overall player this year but honestly, he's not far above average skill wise. We stepped up pretty much everywhere and it's hard not to get excited about our system with much better skill across the board.

Practices should be fun next year!
