JPScott, you have a list of UK players from each "sweet 16" region?

As many of you know, JPScott and his UK stats website is without a doubt the authoritah on all UK stats/history. And one part of it has a list of all the UK players from each state, including KY. JPScott, I was wondering if it'd be possible for you to also have a list of not only the players from KY, but also lists of UK players from each of the "sweet 16" regions. In my case, my region is 3rd region (and 9th district). For my HS (Daviess County, class of 1999), I think the only player I can find is Larry Miller, who played on Rupp's last team in 1972. Rex Chapman of course went to our rival Apollo (boooooooooo), which when I was little he was like my hero (don't ask). Randy Embry (1962-65), Cliff Hagan (1951-54), Bill Bibb (1954-55), Bobby Watson (1950-52) went to Owensboro High.

Another neat list if it hasn't been made already is all the UK players who went to the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen (which has been played at Rupp since 1994; can you imagine how it must feel for a HS senior who knows they're going to UK next year to step on that floor?). And I also think it's so awesome that we don't do any of that 1A, 2A, 3A stuff like most other states. And it was really sad when Indiana did that in 1997(?)...now a "Hoosiers" Cinderella team is not possible at all (and I bet in practice the 4A state champ is seen as the "real" state champ anyway).

For my UK player by state page, I have a hyperlinked imagemap which takes you to a list of the players from that state.

I've toyed with the idea of making a similar page for Kentucky players, where each county can potentially be linked. Problem with this is that I didn't find a good imagemap graphic at the time and I didn't feel like it was worth the time and effort to define my own imagemap, especially for Kentucky counties which can be extremely irregularly shaped.

Also I'd need to assign the county for each hometown.

In the end I found it required too much work than I wanted to put into it so that project has sat on the shelf for a long time.

If someone wants to provide me with a workable imagemap of the Sweet Sixteen regions, or of the individual counties, then I'd be open to putting something like that online.

It's not just the image, it needs to be an imagemap (i.e. I have to have the coordinates mapped out so that one can click on a county and it will take you to the correct spot on the list.)

[Edit: Also I am looking for an image that doesn't have the names of the counties on the map itself. The reason is that like the graphic above, I'd like to fill in counties with UK players in blue, and having the extra text interferes with that.]

Another minor issue is that teams have swapped regions through the years.

Jon, I would absolutely love to assist/help you with your research in anyway I can (I can't do that web design/programming stuff like you'd need to in order to do the map thing)...only trouble is I don't drive and the only library within semi-reasonable walking distance is the Owensboro one. I'm guessing the really good stuff is at the LEX and LOU libraries right?

Blank Kentucky County Map can be downloaded.

This kygeonet web page has the coordinates of schools on the map but you have to click on "Layers", select schools, and then select the pulldown for "Open Attribute Table". You could then pull out the GPS coordinates of the schools.

The KHSAA site has the current regional alignment by school.

Someone with Photoshop could download the blank Kentucky Map, color in the regions with a unique color (or create 16 unique maps), coordinate the pixels of that map with the GPS coordinates shown in the kygeonet map, convert the KHSAA list to a list of school by region. The region could then be added to Jon's database for each Kentucky player along with the GPS coordinates. One could then set up the page showing the Map of the first region, showing a list of all players from that district. You could also list the school and put a pin on the map using the GPS coordinates to pixel mapping when someone clicks on the player. Just a simple exercise left for the reader.

Another way to do this would be to create seventeen maps, one, a gray map with each district colored with a gray 16 times the (region -1) they are in. You could use an address to GPS coordinate converter to take the home address, look up the Pixel corresponding to the GPS coordinates in the graymap, take the value of the gray pixel, divide by 16 and add one, then look up the correct region map that I described above.

Red, thanks for the suggestions but I think what you're proposing is different (and much more involved) than what I'm asking for.

When I refer to coordinates, I'm not talking about GPS coordinates. I'm talking about the set of (x,y) pixel locations on a given image which can be used to define areas of the image for an imagemap.

Presumably this has been done by someone for the Kentucky counties already. If not, I could do it (assuming I have a good image to use), it would just take some time and be incredibly tedious.
