Getting Wall on board was the key to earning the respect of Calipari's Kentucky guys.
He's probably been the most faithful Cal player to the program over the years and now we have him locked in on Pope.

Love those remarks by John Wall. Gives me even more respect for him. Like to have him as a coach on staff but probably doesn't have his degree.
While I work in higher education myself, we have always heard that coaches and assistants have to have at least a bachelor's degree. I've never heard where that is actually is set in stone. Is that NCAA or what? Is that some sort of accreditation issue? Certainly not all higher ed staff have a degree, so why does coaching staff have to have a degree? There is no academic credit given for participation in sports, so I see no correlation to needing a degree, but it seems it is set somehwere.
I agree, Wall is the man and needs his jersey hung. UK needs to hang the Elite O and D guys. Even if it’s on one banner, they could add to it guys like Lamb, Jones, Ulis, who won titles or went to multiple final fours as well.
Wish he would sign up to play for La Familia in TBT. That's if he's physically able to compete like that anymore. I know injuries have wrecked him. Same with Cousins. would love to see them team up again.
I would like to see John wall working for espn in the studio or analyst live. Wouldn’t mind him on secN if no espn or maybe in uk media. We need and he can lead the way but we need former players in the media or in the ncaa tournament coverage. Wall would be great at espn if he wants that path. He would probably drag along a couple others to espn with him. Wall will probably end up on nba tv but the college gig is better
Our team will be arriving in the next few days and the pickup games will begin and I'm hoping to get some reports specially if wall makes it to mix it up with the guys on the pickup games. He says he will try to make it to Lexington

I did a little research and read that it isn't mandated by NCAA but almost every college seems to require it from their coaches, assistants included. Just what I found in a quick search but maybe someone else has more knowledge on this question. I always had heard you needed a degree to coach in NCAA.
We would still love it if it still worked, but it doesn’t. The problem was that Cal’s ego wouldn’t let him adapt.

Universities require degrees because that is what they sell.

I think this just illustrates what we all know. Even tho it's becoming more and mroe about who the coach is and less about the school, I still maintain a large percentage of these kids even the ones that came because of Cal, loved their time at UK and will still be very loyal to not just Cal, but UK.
He’s still my all time favorite cat. I’ll never forget the turn around he brought to UK. We went from the laughing stock of college bball with a drunk making players ride in the equipment trailer after losing to awful teams straight back to the top. Wall made it cool to go to UK again and it made for some incredible memories for many of us. I was about 10th row at the game against UNC that year and it’s still the most fun I’ve ever had at a sporting event. And I’ve been to some awesome games.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be an either or situation like some of our fanbase seems to think for former players.
Wall was the man. It's a shame we bricked 28 of 32 threes. If we make even 7 of 32 we win. Wall deserved a final four berth and a shot at a title.
Miller was 0 for 4, patterson 0 for 4, Bledsoe 0 for 5. These guys all shot 34 to 38% (this percentage is higher pre wvu game). You play that game 100 more times and those guys all shoot the same 3 point attempts and I doubt they ever shoot 4 for 32 again.
I loved Cal as coach for about 1/2 his stay it started to fade the Shai season some. After the 9-16 year that was just bout it ........ then St Peter's loss was it for me . Writing was in wall he was shook and just lost his edge. Appreciate the first 8 years and love him for that but happy hes gone
I think one of the requirements to work for ESPN is to hate Kentucky. Jay Williams is #1 and when Kentucky beat Duke last season he had to change his Dookie diaper and it ruined his segment lol.
Seth Greenberg is another hater and when Calipari left he was butt hurt and needed a valium.

ND hired the GT coach that upon a background had lied about his degree and they fired him immediately. The lying went a long way in that decision of course

Maybe if they love the game enough as well as their college. It still keeps them in the limelight and being relevant. He's still young so maybe he would have the desire to prove himself in another facet of the game. Larry Bird was rich yet coached the Pacers for several years before moving to the front office with his aching back. There have been others who have moved on to coaching after their careers.
It’s not only ESPN that hates Kentucky. I’ve said our bad treatment started when Mark Emmert was appointed president of the NCAA. He despised Calipari. Thought he cheated in recruiting.
That combined with the fact that the NCAA is an ACC brotherhood has affected the officials. There is no question in my mind that Higgins and other officials, Shows, Adam’s, Olgelsby and Surmons are still carrying it out even though Emmert retired and Calipari is gone. I hoped CMP would be the one where we finally got a fair whistle. Didn’t happen this year. We somehow always foul someone on every drive and our opponents shoot double free throws in important games.
The last 3 minutes of the Oklahoma game should go down in history as the worst officiating ever.
Bill gates has no degree. Did you know you can go to Medical School in the US without a college degree? I know of two high performing Doctors who never graduated college.
But lets make sure the coaches have degrees.
Cal didn't "lose his edge". He just stopped caring so much about winning at the collegiate level, and put his focus toward protecting guy's draft status each season. It got to the point that they didn't even need his protection because the money was so good if they got drafted.
If Wall wants to he will be a very good studio or game broadcaster. He’s a natural. Not many are.

Though that is technically true about doctors, you have to fulfill a list of prerequisite courses that generally put you extremely close to finishing a bachelor’s. Majority of docs have their college degree.
You are accurate. Mark Emmert hated UK and Calipari and poisoned the NCAA administration against us. He particularly hated the John Wall/DeMarcus Cousins/Eric Bledsoe etc team and that attitude filtered down to Athletic Directors all over the country.
Also, John Wall was the single most exciting player I ever saw play at UK and my first game was when I was too young to remember much in 1956. Standing screaming at the tv in my living room over some outrageous John Wall play.
And HR and it's credentialism is the bane of all large organizations.
I’m not sure if you know but before being appointed to president of the NCAA he was AD at Washington. Terrance Jones decommitted from them at the last second and chose UK. Emmert publicly said Cal cheated. The next year we stole Enes Kanter from them. He again called out Cal for cheating. He was then appointed president of the NCAA and declared Kanter ineligible to ever play at UK even tho as AD he was committed to his school.

If you're coaching for any reason other than to win at UK, you've "lost your edge". That's the entire reason he was hired and being paid such a ridiculous salary. He forgot that winning was priority #1, 2, 3, 4 & 5. That's losing you're edge in my book, or at the very least, losing your way.

The only difference IMO pre 2015 Cal and post 2015 Cal was ..........wins and losses. Tournament results that he got he was no longer getting.
I don't think he had some transformation or he ultimately changed or became more focused on the draft.
He just wasn't getting the results that he got in the beginning. I feel like people like to attach narratives to things like "the Wisconsin game shook him" or he didn't care after winning in 2012.
I think it just illustrates you can care about winning but it doesn't mean you are always going to get the same results. Looking back on it if we were being honest with ourselves our recruiting was always going to take a little hit and that little hit is what ultimately started turning tournament runs into tournament upsets. But the massive ego that Cal had, I still find it hard to believe the man didn't want to win every game he coached.
Hey, not only do I know that, but I also know he was the Provost at Montana State university before he was at Washington. And played big man around here, didn't care who heard what he said about anyone, and earned a lot of enemies for it.
