John calipari jokes with mark pope "dont you ruin my program man "

This is KSR taking a pretty innocuous quote from the interview with Pope and making it seem like it's something bigger than it appeared in context
I disagree. Cow’s vanity and lack of connection with both reality and the UK fan base makes that comment very significant. He most certainly believes it was and is his program and not that he was entrusted as its caretaker. His warped priorities of thinking getting top recruits and making sure they were drafted high vs his needing to win big time is so apparent. Teams that go far in the tournament allow their stars to shine and get drafted…the route to the NBA takes care of itself.

Yeah. A 2 seed in 2 of his last 3 years here. Oh, the horrors!!
Yeah. Both of those 2 seeds lost in the first game of the tournament to 15 seeds, two of the most devastating (and embarrassing) defeats in UK history. After the Oakland disaster, I gave up my family's season tickets that we held since Rupp Arena opened in 1976.

I know this is not a popular view on here, but considering that after Rupp , Calipari did take Kentucky to the most final fours , I think he deserves some appreciation from BBN.

His comments and jokes are another thing. If he would not had made the comments he made over the years towards BBN , UK administration and Kentucky media, probably he would still be the head coach of Kentucky basketball even today.

For both him and us is good that he is not the coach anymore. However , I will always give him respect for his first 10 years at Kentucky and everything he has done of the court for the Commonwealth.

Nah, he wasn't winning enough. Now, had he not been Mr. "Lion doesn't listen to a Lamb" maybe he have gotten a bit more grace.

But the dude couldn't win a first round game with TWO T10 draft picks. He was done.

Surely that amounted to more than 1 tournament win
I am sure the Cal apologist thinks there should be seeding banners for Cal. The only thing missing is another reminder of the number of Cal players who are playing in the NBA.

Do you regret that now?

Posters saying he did the right thing and “moved on”, “left”, etc. I don’t think it happened that way. And if it was up to him he’d still be here beating his square peg in a round hole further destroying OUR program.

He’s still talking about the program publicly but now we’ll get to hear about how UK fans can’t let it go. In my book once this last season ended the Cal vs UK narrative was kind of over. At least the heat. Now he’s back to stoke the fire a little for some more attention he doesn’t deserve. This is the Mark Pope show now. Cal brings nothing to the table anybody here wants anymore.

Cal was ruining the Commonwealth's program. I know he was just joking, but I'll never believe a part of him didn't think it was his.
What scares Cal now is that Pope will go on a run and add Titles confirming the very reason BBN wanted his lying ass gone. The reason Cal made that snarky comment was to take a jab at the fans that accused him of ruining the program. That's just his DNA. LSOS.

But beat the likes of Pitino, Marhsall's insanely good Shocker team, Self, etc. Cal will just forever be an enigma.

And you'll never convince me something didn't happen to him during Covid. He was NEVER the same Cal after that.
Yep. Built the program to insane heights but lost focus on winning and couldn't keep us there.

He started the descent after he won the title.. It was a slow go, thanks to getting incredible talent. It kept him afloat for a short time. Then he bottomed out during the Pandemic. That was it. It was all over but the crying after that.
Well he even said something to the fact of now that we have done that.... After they won the title in 2012 so right there should've been the early warning sign....

Ruining seems a bit silly when the very next year we went to a Sweet 16.

If Billy G couldn't ruin this program, certainly Cal couldn't.

I assume in the future there will be a time when the fanbase looks back on the entire Cal tenure and sees it in a positive light. Sure some would think with the talent we had we should have won more than 1 title, but I think overall it wasn't as awful as people make it out to be.

I will always say the biggest issue during that entire tenure was the lack of consistency, partly in the logic of one and dones. No one thinks poorly of 2010, 2012 or 2015. No one thinks poorly of 2017 or 2019. Even post 2015, we had some very talented and good teams that just happened to not get results in the tournament. But that wasn't the major issue. The major issue IMO was too many years in between where we just weren't competitive at all.

It's one thing to get upset in the tournament. This happens all the time and has happened to some very outstanding coaches and other programs. But to me look at our seeds over that time. Look at a team like Kansas under Self during that time. There was just way more consistency.

1s and 2s win titles. We weren't 1s and 2s enough IMO. And that was the ultimate nail in the coffin here for Cal.

But saying he ruined the program (he clearly did not) is a bit silly for a guy that did win a title here and took us to four final fours.

I thought it started after 2015. He had the undefeated season in his palm. If he gets it it probably propels us to the top players we missed out on after and cal would have been juiced. Instead he went into q deep depression and didn’t realize it. It’s like bbn needed a butterfly net to bring cal back. And when he got swaggy again that was the end.

The program was in ruins when pope took it. Nil and the portal saved it or it would have been a 3 year rebuild with pope at the helm.

Ruin? Like the way he left all his other programs getting sanctioned by the NCAA? Pope has a lot to live up to, indeed.

Cal loves UK & never wanted to leave here. He kept thinking he'd get over the hump & the magic would return. But there came a point of no return & he finally saw it & bowed out. That was harder for him than you think. I'm one who thinks we should always respect Cal! I totally understood disappointment from fans, but I never understood the hate.
You read this board and don’t understand hate???
People read these threads just looking for someone to attack. It’s today’s America. Angry and wanting to blame someone.

Cal was getting killed on the court and it was Cal’s own doing. He never admitted things needed to change. He may have given lip service but he never did anything different. Also, Cal made a mockery of the fan base and talked down to us and belittled Kentuckians whenever he could near the end. I don’t hate him but I am glad he’s gone. He will need 10+ years of separation before he is ever considered to be welcomed back for anything relating to UK for me.
... pretty much exactly as I see it.
