MLB has contacted the Reds about the possibility of JJ Hoover pitching the entire Home Run Derby at the All Star game. They are looking to juice the event and figure if he throws his normal stuff HR totals will soar.

Has anybody ever started the season as a closer and gotten to the end of April with a 16.00 era and still been in the Bigs? I did a calculation -- he'd need THIRTY EIGHT scoreless one-inning appearances to lower his era to 3.30 -- respectable for a middle reliever.

This makes his 1-10 record of 2014 in which he single-handedly crushed the team's hopes look like competent performing. Last year's decent record in a reduced role only proves it's all in his head -- he doesn't have the character to stand up to pressure.

Reminds me of Tom "Boom boom" Hume. Hoover is beyond pitiful.

lol Now if just the home run derby would have been in Cincinnati this year, would have been perfect!! His numbers last year were fine as a set up man, followed up by this year's bad one. Story of his career so far. I was randomly looking up the old Reds closer Danny Graves a couple days ago and stumbled across this fact. Though he was a pitcher, he is the only player in MLB history who's only hits in a season were a home run. Did it in 01 and 02.

Hoover just sent down to Louisville. Bringing up former Blue Jays All Star Reliever Steve Delabar from Elizabethtown and Central Hardin High School. Born and raised in E'town, went to Central myself.

BTTT

To celebrate Hoover's legendary five-run 15th, complete with grand slam, after Reds relievers had pitched eight-plus hitless innings.

Second straight five run inning performance.
Saw where he got optioned back to Louisville this morning. They need to just release him and be done. That was a classic Hoover performance last night however I'm sure the Home Run Derby contestants wouldn't mind if he was throwing to them in a couple weeks. Reds Bullpen =

Not sure why certain players get more of a chance than others in this organization. Even read comments recently where Sam LeCure slammed the Reds over this now that he's in the Dodgers organization. I would advocate for Pedro Villarreal to come back up here. Had a 3.42 ERA over 50 innings last year. Guys like Hoover and Diaz have been given chance after chance to prove themselves. Pedro can save the rest of the bullpen coming in and pitch long relief when a starter blows up. He can give you a spot start if need be. Couldn't be worse than what the Reds have right now as they are on pace to have the worst bullpen ERA in baseball history, well over 6.00. Iglesias and Lorenzen maybe should help over time but I'm not sure that being relievers are the long term plans the Reds organization have for these two.

The Reds are hanging on to Bryan Price almost as long as they are guys like Hoover. How they kept trotting out Simon every 5 days only to post near double digit ERA is beyond me too.
