“Mark Pope goes to a 1-3-1, a handful of possessions Kentucky has played all year, in the defense . . . But your gotta do something, you gotta throw a curveball, something at Gonzaga to try to change the game . . . Kentucky played zone for the entire possession till the shot clock got under :10 then went man-to-man . . . So, Kentucky has changed the game. Mark Pope just one possession of zone that ended up to man, gets a key stop, and now Kentucky playing with force on their offensive end, and all of a sudden, you’ve got a ballgame in Seattle.

Commercial Break
Chryon: UK 7-0 RUN IN LAST 1:13

All Kentucky is doing, they’re showing zone alignment, 1-3-1, but then they’re quickly going right back into their man-to-man, and just slowing Gonzaga down a little bit, trying to confuse them, take that early ball-screen action away from Gonzaga by showing zone.”

What fantastic coaching. This is gonna be an exciting era in UK basketball. It’s a great day in BBN.

I was shocked that Nembhard looked flustered with the zone and they didn’t forcefeed IKE more while being fronted by Brea, but that was their loss!

Que Daffy Duck for me!!!
BBN was conditioned to forgot the importance of coaching adjustments under Cal but this was a great reminder. Pope put on a masterclass.
Excellent usage of 1-3-1 to slow down the Zags.

The thing is… these aren’t some newfangled, way out in left field concepts. It’s just basic basketball. That’s why fans were fed up with Cal. It wasn’t even about “getting with the times”. Just freaking BE AN ACTUAL BASKETBALL COACH. Which is your job title that you are paid nine million dollars annually to do.

It is SHOCKING how bad John Calipari was the last 6-7 years here.

So now we have a combo of Calipari and Tubby Smith. Niiiiiiiice!

Tubby was a master of changing defense.

The grit and resilience of Tubby.
The top flight recruiting and motivation of prime Calipari.
The relentlessness and aggression of Pitino.
The calmness and historical respect of Joe B. Hall.
The frenetic pace and cutting edge approach of Rupp.
The drinking of Sutton and Gillispie…oh that one is me.
