He's got more than just a chance to be better than Zimmerman, regardless of how much hyperbole people want to engage in about how drastic the gap is between the two (one way or the other). He has a notably higher ceiling than Zimm. Zimm is more skilled and that may be more useful for a single year of college basketball. I'd rather roll the dice with a high ceiling guy and take that kind of talent, but every one has their preferences.

You hit the nail on the head, one year, that is the debate. However, Zim is gone and we will take all comers on our list now for sure.

Maker showed nothing in the two games he played in Lex and the last All Star game was very underwhelming. I thought Zim outplayed him by a mile.

He definitely cannot play in the paint at this point. He has great skills for his height but I am afraid he will not come close to meeting potential in just one year.

I would definitely take him and not expect him to be a transcendent type, just hope he can get us some buckets.
All star games mean absolutely nothing.
No they really don't. And its not something someone who follows recruiting closely will usually cite at all. I actually discard EVERYTHING I see in any all star game. The actual game is a team sport with many different variables. All Star games are one dimensional shows by flamboyant personalities. The workhorses rarely shine in them.

And Jerry Meyer is just a hack man. Why do people continuously post his guess?

Here's another crystal ball I found somewhere. UK 75% EVERYBODY.

I've been following recruiting very closely since the mid 90's. The All Star games you are speaking of are completely meaningless and I could care less if Zimemrman scored 100 in them. Maker has a talent that is something I'd love to see in a UK uniform and I think he's better. I really enjoy his game.

SC, I love you man, but you following recruiting very closely doesn't hold water with me brother. I am afraid I have way more experience in the 90's and 2000's than most general posters, as most here know.

With that said, I watched Maker play in Lexington. Not all star games. Have you seen him live?

He does have some great skills, but he is also the biggest youtube sensation I have ever seen. Hope he comes here and hope he does well.
Are you speaking in your best Britt McHenry voice?

Thon obviously has the height and athletic ability. If he is willing to work and learn there isn't a better college coach than Cal at developing talent. I hope the kid comes and Cal turns him into another multimillionaire.

Not sure what you mean Brian. I understand if you follow recruiting you think you see more inZimemrman, but I see a kid in Maker that is going to break out. He's Raw, but I like his game more than Zims. I like Zim, but Maker has an eliteness to him I don't see in Zimm.

And brother I'm not sure what experience you're talking about. You'd have to tell me what you mean.
I was part of the original recruiting network with Lemmons, Gibbons, Emfinger, Van Coleman, Cronauerand, and Terranova.

I started the first UK scout board and helped designate recruiting territories and hires for Scout with Jim Heckman and Bernie Kosar . We did all the camps and combines.

IMO, I agree with the poster above, Zim better now and Thon much more potential to be a star.
Ah I see. That's pretty cool there.

well Zim might look like the more polished prospect, but I think if Maker plays in college his impact will be greater. I could cite several reasons why I think this, but I doubt it would change your mind.

We're not that far apart. As I've told you I help coach a high school and we also help out on an AAU team locally/events and see these young guys in and out every year. I'm not an expert, but I see enough to understand what I'm looking at.

We will see.

I think you are right. Zim is just more ready to help next year IMO, but Thon will be better in the long run. Hell, I hope we get him and he proves me wrong to pieces, I'm not proud.

From youtube highlight videos I would take Maker, from watching them both play in games I would take Zimmerman. Maker needs another year in prep school

I have seen Maker play and he is indeed a very raw player at this point. However, he has skills you rarely see in a guy 7' tall. Imagine WCS with ball handling skills and a decent shot. He would do very well under Cal and with a lot of hard work in the training room could come into next season at 220 lbs which would help him immensely.

How quickly we forget about our own raw All American that didn't even average 10 points per game. I'll take Maker any day!

I agree. And I have believed since Maker reclassified to 2015 that Calipari will get him, if he has the grades. Going overseas or going prep will be his options if he doesn't have the grades, which is still a possibility.

Maker reminds me of a young Jonathan Bender. I really think he has more potential from an athletic standpoint than Skal but as far as his development and understanding of the game he's a few years behind.

From what I have heard the problem isn't grades, it's whether or not he will have enough credits to get through the NCAA clearing house.

Right now how's a skinny, weak, jump shooter that can score in transition because he runs well. Still a very good rebounder and shot blocker.
If his dribbling skills are viable, could he fill a similar offensive niche as Terrence Jones?

Other than the skinny and weak part, that description fits Jones. Jones wasn't great in the post in either his freshman or sophomore seasons, but he was an excellent ball handler for his size and a great finisher.

I would take Diallo over Maker by a country mile. Have not been impressed by Maker at all.
