He's the real deal, folks. I made the trip to Woodford County to watch the Court XIV tournament this evening. RWE played Huntington Prep in the headliner. Taye Kinney is truly legit. I'd love to see him end up in a UK jersey.

BUT, Jasper Johnson is elite. He ended the game with 31 points. He effortlessly shot the ball from 3 to 4 feet behind the line. What I really enjoyed though was his supreme willingness to attack the rim. That kid wanted to posterize people like Ja.

I think our biggest complaint this season is that we don't have great athletes. That won't be a problem next year. BTW, Pope and Malachi Moreno sit together courtside and watch Jasper put on a show!

Yesterday, Kinney, Jasper, Moreno came to Rupp to see us.

And Kinney had witnessed a murder on us...

Definitely negative effect on his recruiting

Yesterday we were soft, played no defence and outcoached by a coach who can not coach

Yesterday’s game result will have no impact on Kinney’s decision whatsoever. I am sure he was impressed with the Rupp atmosphere. It will come down to fit and NIL

Jasper played undisciplined last year, and some recruits (like Braylon Mullins) do not want to play with Jasper.

So this season Jasper learns to be more effective, be a better teammate and not selfish, I think he actually makes progress in this kind of area.

Think Pope can rectify this kind of defect of Jasper under system.

I think he has tool to be good defender. Guards do not to be very strong, but needs to be quick and tall to defend well. Jasper has enough size and speed to be good defender

Think he has lotto potential and can make similar level of contribution to Cason Wallace in freshman year

Thought Kinney grew up a uk fan?
Wonder if uk will recruit him and Jason crowe, since both are point guards?
It may be hard to grab Jason Crowe out of west coast.

Also, we have to fight against Cincinnati, Xavier and Arkansas with this kid. Cincinnati recently comes strong in recruiting, gets a five star SF recently

Far from done deal for UK on Kinney

Very good to hear. Definitely need a PG to breakdown the defense next year.

You just need 2 or 3 of these types and it makes everyone better. Imagine how this could free up guys like brea or oweh or butler.

When you have some elite talent, the other team has to focus on them. It's like adding a #1 WR.. it lessens coverage in all the rest of WRs. We need some top talent to free up the rest of the team.. you can make the argument that guys like Butler and Oweh really shouldn't be primary options on such an elite program..

Great to hear he looked good. While our success won’t be completely driven by the freshmen next year, they’ll be so much more important than this group we have currently.

I think prospects like Jasper have a wide range of freshman performance outcomes. But we’ve never seen anyone with his talent level under Pope who is obviously a very good offensive coach.

I did have to laugh at him winning MVP and holding a big $500 check. With absurd NIL amounts and partnerships that was just a funny photo to me.

We could use Jasper Johnson on this current roster. One of the few times I was hoping for a reclass at Christmas time.
Just like you posted, we’re gonna need to keep improving our NIL cause these types of players are massively important!

Yeah I hope we go after 3 very high level portal guys to go with the returnees and super freshman.

I’m not sure if everyone has watched much basketball outside of UK because there are only 4-5 freshmen making a big impact in the entire nation. Next year’s class is going to be good for us, but they’re not the 2nd coming of Wall, Cousins, & Bledsoe.
College basketball is going to get younger starting next season. The extra Covid years ends and there won’t be three to four 5th and 6th year players on each team.

We still need to get some great talented freshman every season. What we can’t continue to do is have liabilities like the three freshman we have this year.

For us, there will still be plenty of mid major transfers moving up to fill the spots on the high level teams like UK. Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, SD St, Dayton….those guys will still be available. We really only need a couple. Essentially a Butler clone and a top PF that can shoot and rebound.

Garrison Oweh, the 3 sophs, and the 3 freshmen is a great base to start with.

Oweh might be the leading returning scorer in the SEC. Edwards from Vandy, Hubbard, and Thiero are the only ones ahead of him that have eligibility and may return.

I hope Johnson also got some of his father's and grandfather's football strength and toughness. That would portend well for defense.

Dennis Johnson's best attributes as a DE were length, speed and agility, not so much brute strength. Jasper plays basketball the same way.
So he's easily pushed around and will have difficulty with older, strong SEC 2Gs?
