According to today's Herald Leader, running back Jason Patterson is no longer on the team. They listed 3 scholarship running backs, Dowdell, Wilcox and Mizel - no Patterson. Could this be an oversight by the writer or is Patterson really gone? A week ago they were raving about how good Patterson looked in practice.

Interesting. As of today, Patterson is still listed on UK's official roster. He played with the first team offense yesterday. In today's college football world, anything is possible. It's also possible that the HL editorial staff goofed.

He got 1st team reps, whereas Wilcox did not yesterday. Would be surprising if he left.

I doubt Wilcox will leave unless he feels buried on the depth chart. Given that he is UK's leading returning rusher, Wilcox is not buried on the depth chart. Stoops is concerned about Wilcox's level of maturity, because it translates to judgment on and off the field. Wilcox has a good NIL deal at UK. As long as he understands Stoops is trying to make a better man out of him and improve his life, Wilcox should be fine.

But there is a caveat on the roster named Tovani Mizell, who was once committed to GA before injuring his knee in hs. Mizell spent last season completing his rehab and working out. According to the official UK webpage, Mizell is 6' 223# now. He has a lot of upside and, if healthy, could conceivably take snaps away from any other UK RB. With 4 years of eligibility left, Mizell could eventually change any UK RB's outlook.

It's a room with a lot of potential and quality depth if Coach JB can keep them all engaged.

Makes no sense if Patterson leaves. Both Stoops and Hamden praised him in spring, both as a receiver and as a runner capable of picking up tough yards and a threat to pop a bigger run. If he was running with the 1s yesterday, why would he leave?

The way to keep the RBs engaged is to give them carries. The more plays UK runs, the more opportunities for the RBs. The more successful our OL is, the more plays UK will run. It still comes back to the effectiveness of our OL.

For sure!

Only way Wilcox leaves is if he is denied KOC duties...

Sounds like it will be a very run heavy offense. Great, I don't have to watch his lazy efforts to pass protect. Wilcox is a good complimentary RB. He isn't an every down RB.

Sounds like a typo. He's still listed on the depth chart and other recent two deep projections.

I'm interested in seeing what Mizell can do now that he's 100 percent again. From what I remember, he had some blazing speed. If he has retained a lot of that speed while adding that additional muscle, he could be a real weapon.

As far as I can tell, he wasn't mentioned a single time in the multiple write ups I read. No mention by a coach, either. Doesn't sound like he's making much of an impression. May still be less than 100%.

Stoops said that he likes seeing Patterson out on the field because he could be an every down back. Patterson and Dowdell split time with the first teamers in the late practices. DJ Miller and Quisenberry played well enough that they could be in the WR rotation. Maclin commented that Calzada has the best QB arm he has been around. He said that Calzada is one of those QB's that can throw the WR open. His arm strength is more on the level of a Levin. He can zip passes with ease all over the field. His vast experience is already paying off working with the receivers with the tips he is giving them.

On defense I look for us to pick up another safety. Our outside linebackers have looked good with not only the portal guys we got but Smith has looked pretty good also. Our new freshman NG has looked good enough early that if injuries occur the staff seems to like him. Fortunately with Hayes back and a guy like Gustus that can move around we have around six experienced DL the staff feels good about. They will be keeping an eye on the portal for another DL that might fit well with their scheme. The inside linebacking has gotten a boost with Godfrey playing pretty well this spring. He has the SEC size at the position and moves just well enough in coverage. He helps give us nice depth at that position. Just needs game experience this season.
