Jaron Pierre

Are we sure that he isn’t actually Juan Pierre’s dad instead of the other way around? Juan is still a growing boy and might catch up to Jaron yet.

Somebody help me out here: I was under the impression that Pierre is more of an on-ball floor-general guard like Lowe and that Yates is more of a shooter. Is that wrong? Or are people supposing it’s either/or based on the overall number of guards we have on the roster?

Pierre is a combo guard, who can really score. Yates can really score to. Honestly the only difference really is Pierre is a better athlete but not by much. Yates has big ten experiene. If I got a choice I would pick Yates but it’s not some huge difference

I truly believe these kids know how to milk every last drop of attention out of their recruitment.

This has happened 100 times over the last few years. Following people from UK, commenting on another recruits pics……,they know what they’re doing. Only to pick another school a couple days later.

I want both guys, but I put no stock into social media stuff.

That and rim protection are my biggest concerns right now. Garrisson isn’t great at either. I want Alvaro and a big life Cheyule
Rueben Chinyelu, Dylan Cardwell or Felix Okpara type of player, can defend and rebound. I want one this type of player paired with Moreno Garrison (and Alvaro)

But I think unfortunately, Pope does not like this type of player in his system

I think he wants that type of player but they have to be a passer. That’s the archetype Amari was brought in for. The problem with some of those bruiser bigs is where do you put them on offense. Dunker spot bigs hurt your spacing.

I get that, but we can use Alvaro as hub and passer this year(assuming we get him). I like garrisson but I can already tell him as out center will age me

I think Florida plays fun style of basketball and has no problem of putting Rueben Chinyelu on the court, I do not know how Pope will cope this problem. But with four players that can shoot, this type of blue collar player can be on the court with good arrangement.

Amari can pass, but he was not physical as his weights show...

It is hard to find this type of player from portal, if you can pass, if you can rebound, if you can defend, you are likely a NBA player...

The five doesn’t have to do the passing. I think Alvaro will get the primary duty as well as some guards running the sets out there. You can run the zoom action off of any position. Pope just used Amari out there because of his passing and him being the non shooter. Non shooter can find the shooters off the action. That won’t be the case IMO if you get Alvaro. I expect you see a lot of BG spot up off ball and back cuts

It’s just a different system. Florida runs a little zoom as well but notice they don’t run that much with Chinyelu out there. Definitely not opposed to Pope getting a guy like that, just acknowledging he’d have to change things. That said, at BYU, Pope ran through the post instead of 5 out zoom a lot when Traore was in the game and created power plays from the post so I suppose Pope could add unique wrinkles for a Chinyelu archetype 👍

Not sure: Pope used the bigs the same way at BYU. Right now history would say Pope likes playing through the big man.

Pope has actually run multiple different types of offenses over the years. His five out zoom action style has been a more recent thing actually. As I was saying in another post, Pope had specific reasons for running from Amari last year and Khalifa the year before.

When he came to Rupp with Utah state (I think), they ran a different offense. More low post guys pick and popping. I went back 3 years at BYU and he seemed to like the big out top more on those teams. i did not go farther back than that.

Seems like Pope's system really requires the center to be the main facilitator up top. It makes the oppsing center come out to guard him, a 7 footer can see the floor better and it creates a true 5 out offense, where your weakest shooter (usually the center) doesn’t hurt you.

If someone else facilitates, the center ends up in no mans land. You don’t want him hanging out in the paint, so he has to go out on the perimeter and if he can't shoot, it defeats the purpose.

I really think the center has to be the facilitator in this offense

if you go back and watch the film from last season, you will find that Amari orchestrated the zoom a whole lot but he wasn’t the only one who did. Even last year, we orchestrated plenty from positions 1-4. It’s kind of a misnomer or misconception that Pope has to run the action from the five. The worst shooter on the floor the last two seasons for him was his 5 and they were both elite passers - Amari and Khalifa. You can run the same action from the four and have BG spot up. Doesn’t mean BG won’t be the focal point but he doesn’t have to be.
