James Young had played nine minutes this season entering tonight's game. He finished with 20 against the Pelicans.

Whoa. Hold the phone! James Young scores then D's up Anthony Davis at the rim on the ensuing possession. #Celtics

Celtics nearly put James Young on a flight to the D-League. Instead, he caught a hype train to New Orleans.

I have been confused by his lack of playing time. He always seemed to have the elite athleticism to play in the NBA, and his shot is NBA quality. He struggled with other aspects (ball-handling, passing, defense), but not to the point where he couldn't fix those issues.

I figure it's going to take a change of scenery for him to develop into a rotation player.

He's had flashy dunks + the epic UCONN slam, but he's a average athlete.

Lets be real, this was easy to envision. He's a highly flawed in almost every area.

I honestly expect him to be out the league in a yr or two. He just isn't NBA quality.

Wow, pretty scathing review. I hope you are wrong. Do you?

In order for Young to become a real NBA player, he's going to have to become a lights out shooter. All there is to it. I love the kid and hope he gets to that point.

We'll just agree to disagree. I think Young has everything he needs to be a great NBA player, he just needs time to develop it. Frankly, he reminds me of a young Demar Derozan, if he catches on with a team that will let him play through his mistakes he can develop along the same lines.

He needs some time and needs to continue to grow as a shooter. His lack of handling and defense might cost him another contract though. I like his offensive game.

I think Boston was a bad spot for him to land. They have Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, Evan Turner, Terry Rozier, and RJ Hunter that all play the same position as James Young. That's just a tough spot for a young, flawed player to work out the kinks. No real mentor, just a lot of people in the same position fighting for playing time.

He has good size, not as athletic as he should be but if he can shoot the three at about 35% he will stay in the league. He's only 20 years old

I don't hope for any UK player to fail. He just wasn't a good prospect to begin with.

This isn't a hindsight take, i always thought he'd be terrible in the league and get bounced early.

Didn't you say something similar to complain about Julius ? Saying he has PF skills but doesn't have the skills to play the SF at the next level? Turns the ball over too much, bull in a china shop. Gets his shots blocked ect...

Pretty much, and those things still stand true today. He can't play SF, still drives into traffic way too often + gets stuffed.

But i wasn't as low on him as i was on Young. I thought Randle can carve out a long career as a off the bench scoring PF. I still stand by that.

The areas of his game which will always hold him bad from being a starter on a contender are - His defense + lack of shooting range. He doesn't score the ball efficiently enough to rely on bullyball.

Wow, I knew he had critics, but didn't know so many liked to voice that were part of BBN. I by no means think he's got every thing he needs to be an All-Star. But, I also wish him well and am grateful for the good he brought to BBN. He struggled, perhaps could/should have stayed for a 2nd year. Was his passing great...no, but not the worst ever.

Keep working JY. Make the most of your minutes!

If someone can name a guard who struggled to make even simple passes more than Young, I'd love to hear it.

Randle is pretty much averaging a double double as a rookie coming on a major injury in a really dysfunctional situation. That's really good

No doubt Randle is putting up numbers, but I would argue that those are the result of sheer effort rather than skill. At this point he reminds me of a stronger Lamar Odom. Can only go left, no jumper. If he can become efficient out to 20 feet over the next few seasons then look out. We're talking All Star quality.

Lamar Odom was essentially a point forward though...?
Yes, he needs to develop a bumper but all I'm saying he's a rookie coming off a major injury and is in a hectic sitatuon right now so let him develop

The jumper will come in time. Randle as a long future in the league. Hard to tell with James Young. I feel like he thinks he's a star right now. Not sure he has the mentality to work as hard as he needs to work.
