Jack Pilgrim late night update

No. We still need a perimeter shooter/scorer
I don't know why so many of us don't see the need for a Yates type guy. This offense needs that elite outside shooter, actually, probably need 2.
Out of Jasper, Lewis and Chandler, we can probably get 1 elite and consistent shooter, but getting a shooter like Yates, puts us at a higher level.
Heck, some of these guys don't want anymore guys. Guess they forgot how many times we complain about not having enough guys, or how we were 1 player short.
Get Yates, Alvaro and Quaintance and this team is set.
Heck, I bet even Travis Perry's momma realizes we need another shooter.

JQ will get the best medical rehab that is available in the USA. Chances are he will be ready to go by December at the latest and his ACL will be even stronger than it was before the injury.

The question is, does the current injury point out that he is injury prone, or was this one just a singularity. It is a gamble that is only worth taking if you have a suitable backup for him. So we need another big to replace him just in case.
We have Diabate and Moreno.
It would be a hard sell to get a player to be an insurance policy for another player.

I doubt he just plays the 4 here. And idk what your beef is with him but he played several big 12 games before getting hurt in late February. So no he didn’t just block shots vs “cal poly”

I'm wondering that, too. Maybe Pope is thinking this gives more flexibility b/c he is big/athletic enough to play the 4 and the 5. Considering how much Pope believes in Garrison's perimeter shooting (I know Pope has a h/o being a touch overly optimistic, but he said multiple times during the year that he expects Garrison to take 3-5 per game next year),.

So, IF Garrison can improve to 33-35% or so behind the arc, which isn't a massive jump, that would be better, by comparison, than Carr produced this past season. So, then you COULD have Garrison/MD on the floor with each other OR with either JQ or Moreno

Do we want to win a title, or just compete for sweet 16's?
The team that won the title last night, had the best backcourt and the deepest front court and I didn't see anyone on that team pouting because they weren't getting enough playing time.
Getting Quaintance is a big deal. He's a guy that is big and strong enough to man up in the paint. Nobody would punk this team with guys like JQ and BG in the paint.
Still think Pope needs to land Alvaro and Yates. Get these last 3 and UK is not just a FF threat, that's a team that would be on the very short national title type team list.

Man, if Garrison can hit at 35% from the outside, good luck defending this team.

I think you need a low post guy with some beef like JQ and an ability to bang down low. Look at the Florida-Houston game if you need further proof. Houston's whole roster is a bunch of guys who have been lifting weights for years and are jacked. They would've been a terrible matchup for us this year because we only had one guy (AW) who could bang with them. Florida had Chinyelu and Handlogten. Currently, we have no one who is a low post threat next year. We need someone to fill that role.

JQ makes me nervous as a potential Sharpe2.0. Big coming off ACL surgery. He will scare others off so I hope they know he'll be ready. Then it's will he be the same as early as next year.

If we get him cool, but I hope we don't pay anything crazy unless it's incentive based on playing and playing well. I guess we aren't gonna get the guy from RM who I thought would be a good fit.

Where exactly is the talent? I *HATE* this news. Why on Earth would we want some kid coming off an injury who is young for his grade, is going to bounce to the NBA as soon as he can, and who might have some handler issues?

These highlights are awful. How hard is it to get a good highlight reel?

You kidding me? how many one footers did Amari miss? JQ dunks every single one.

It's not really a huge jump...

Because he won't be a high volume shooter, I think it is reasonable for him to shoot in the mid 30s. If you even take his whole season, he was 12/40. So, if he makes just 3 more for the season, he would've been 15/40 for 37.5 percent.

So even if he shoots 20 more on the season (roughly 2 per game), it isn't crazy to think he could make 20/60 for 33%

Have not seen his shot chart, but most of the threes I remember BG attempting/making were unguarded from the top of the key. If he increases volume/makes, teams will not leave him alone up there. Thus, he will need to hit some from the corner and elbow too, both with a hand in his face or someone jumping at him. Not saying he can't as the fluidity of his outside shot is not bad. However, if he has success it will bring more pressure and open up lanes (so he will need to have the vision to abandon the 3 and hit a cutter in the open lane).

Did you have an issue with Almonor getting 14.6 minutes per game last year as UK's backup four-man?

He averaged 0.11 rebounds per minute, as a 6'7", 245 lb four-man.

If you want a stretch four as a reserve, one who can shoot the ball at a high clip, we've already got one. His name is Kam Williams. And before you offer a rebuttal about why it wouldn't work, he actually rebounded at a better clip than Almonor at 0.14 rebounds per minute.

If you had no issue with Almonor (who was a terrible rebounder and offered next to no physical presence inside) being our backup four last year, why would you have an issue with Williams being the back-up four?

Williams is infinitely more crafty, a better shooter (percentage-wise), and a better rebounder.

So if JQ doesn't work out, you just shift schemes when Williams checks in behind Mo-D.

Problem solved.
Very good perspective Saul.

Totally agree... the good news is it WOULD allow him to play at the PF while someone like JQ is on the floor at C.

One of my biggest frustrations this past season was the many many, times that an opposing player beat one of our guys off the dribble and approached the basket with Amari right there in perfect position to deny, but with his hands below his waist and no defensive motion whatsoever, like the thought never occurred to him. Quaintance's response in that situation will be very different.

How would JQ be phenomenal in our offense? His shot beyond 8 feet is an absolute horror show.

He DRAGS his FOOT on his jump shots. LOL

He would be an absolute BOAT ANCHOR in our offense. IOW - He'd just get in the GD WAY most of the time.

JFC...
Transition buckets
Scores in the paint
Has ability to stretch the floor (only made six 3's, but will improve with Pope)
Moves well without the ball (Pope's emphasis on cutting)
Good fit handling the ball on perimeter in our zoom and stagger actions

Vs Florida this season: 14 pts, 8 rebs, 4 steals, 2 assists, 2 blocks, only 1 turnover. Good stat line vs national champs
