It's time to change the playoffs - now- not 10 years from now

Many people think it will water down the playoffs with several blow out games, but I would argue that there will be some really good games as well. Yes the stronger teams will probably dominate - but I think for only a few years. Once players realize they can play for a National Championship at their home state school or a school that hasn't been given an opportunity in the past - it will become a pride thing for them to stay home and lead that team to a National Championship playoff spot. It will probably take a few years - but it WILL happen and we will have a college champion that was not seeded as one of the top two teams. Every other sport has a meaningful playoff- why not football? Title town will still be title town - but Alabama will probably not have 1/5 of all the future college championships - like they have now!

For over a decade it was UCLA's basketball team in the final four EVERY YEAR - so what happened to change that - the tournament expanded and started seeding teams. If you don't think teams that are not associated with being a football power matters you are truly mistaken. If you are not a blue blood - you will not be given an equal opportunity. Kentucky is a great example. How many of the voters in the polls still don't realize or give credit to UK for the last several seasons? How many didn't vote for UK, ever, in the ratings polls? Even after we defeated a team that was as high as #2 in the polls! How many didn't know UK beat that Iowa team with 7/8 starters not playing in the game? Just look at how many voters voted Iowa higher than Kentucky after the Citrus Bowl.

Limiting the playoffs to 4 teams is silly. I like the 12 team playoff with the quote "best four" getting byes to the final eight personally. But those first four games could be really fun - and then who knows what will happen. If the four "supers" are really super - they will remain super and it will make no difference. Just those 4 teams will have to play one extra game than they do now. Who wins with that? College football and its fans! It takes a total of 11 playoff games to make this happen. 4 bowl games before Christmas break, 4 games on New Year's Day, 2 games a week later and then the championship game a week later. One more week to have a real champion! All of the previous 10 games are bowl games. The final six bowl games are the six bowl major bowls now! Rose, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, Sugar and Peach. Four other bowls could become home to the first four playoff games. Play all the other bowl games between these 10 bowl games - again its a win-win for everyone. For those that think the season seems to long - then eliminate league championship games. The teams that play in most of them will be in the playoffs anyway!
