It’s official, former Houston WR coach Shorts Jr hired by UK

Is he a home run hire?
I liked this bullet point from the linked bio:

“Since the start of the 2021 season, Houston ranks fifth nationally in receiving touchdowns (96), 12th in receptions (905) and 16th in receiving yards (10,780). Houston's 25 games of 250+ receiving yards in that timeframe also ranks 11th nationally.”

He started as WR Coach in 2021.

All of the talk and speculation in the weeks leading up to the hire mainly focused on Daikiel Shorts and Daymeyune Craig (from Texas A&M).

Most people think Craig would have been the better recruiter, while Shorts will be better at actually developing receivers. So I think we made the right hire. As for recruiting, he is a young guy and still has plenty of time to make a name for himself in that area.

Boy those numbers will drop here with Stoops being in charge. 45 plays per game won’t yield much of anything. Hope he knows what he signed up for.

I really don’t know what to make of hiring someone off the air raid tree

Doesnt seem to be a great recruiter...however he seems to be good at developing WRs. If he can show actual development of WRs here I will take it.

That would take a drastic change in our offensive philosophy.

If he can get the most out of the WR room in Coen's scheme, I would think the total WR numbers would improve a lot and WRs prospects/transfers would look at UK as a solid destination: pro scheme, all WR involved in the passing game, good teacher of WR fundamentals, etc.

Well, the ability to efficiently catch a pass should not differ much between a pro-style set and an air raid set.
Yeah with Coen hinting at picking up the tempo next year this may play hand in hand with that. It wont be air raid but we may see more use of the short quicker routes and underneath stuff which Id be all for. My one criticism of Coen was we seem to rely too much on the 15yd and up routes and didnt work the underneath stuff enough.

Some of these folks lost were likely more upset after the Louisville game than were the Louisville fans.

How many of then are Louisville fans??
Yeah, after UK beat U6 for the fifth straight year I asked Grumpy if GA fans get as upset after a GA win as UK "fans" get after a UK win. I think GA just enjoys winning.

I like it, If you ever go back and look at how guys like Mike leach and other air raid guys worked their receivers in practice on technique, hands, you name it, with all sorts of special drills, catching tennis balls, the works, they really know what they're doing. If your offense is predicated around those guys making lots and lots of catches, they better be prepared and well coached.

The type of routes and ways to get space and open are different….air raid is dependent on recognizing their space pockets pro style leans more on route running and playmaking

All true. But wrapping two hands around the football should not differ between the systems.

Coen said he is a stud that is wise beyond his years. Also said that he had no connections or relationships but was able to recruit well, so that shows you something about his ability to recruit.

Good grief, then find another team to cheer for until a coach meeting your approval is hired.
I do not like Cal. I gave up on him 5 seasons ago, and decided I’m a football fan, anyhow.

I don’t visit the roundball forum daily to spread doom.
