Isaiah Briscoe Wins 3 Pt Contest

Not to be a downer, but winning a 3 point contest doesn't really always translate to being a good 3 point shooter in games (he very well could be) but I think it's pretty wild to already say scoring won't be a problem. Seems like a pretty legitimate concern

Concern to you maybe, not to me. Briscoe may or may not be a terrific 3 point shooter (and on the All-Star circuit, in games, he's been hitting threes at a nice clip), but he is a terrific scorer and there are no two ways about it. He's a perfect compliment to Ulis.
I also think Mulder will light it up. I don't see a scenario where a 46% 3PT volume shooter, that shoots 51% from the floor overall, suddenly can't score. Especially since he's a guy that can create for his shots.
Skal has also failed to disappoint me yet. Didn't he have a ridiculous game last night? Last update I seen on it was 16 points, 16 rebounds I think. He's had a double-double in every game I watched. Easily playing better than Towns played in those games. He's played as well as anybody we've ever had in those games. The dude is legit.
Let Poythress get in there and use his physicality to rebound, and get putbacks, and I have very, very few concerns about the state of our team next season.

Briscoe may not be incredibly athletic, but he plays hard nosed defense. He gets in there to steal the ball, so I'm only very slightly concerned about his defense. Ulis and Poythress are both proven commodities, Skal has been said to be an outstanding defender (Scouts have uttered the words Anthony Davis several times when talking about Skal, when making a pro comparison), and Matthews has the potential to bring MKG-type energy. He has the athleticism (same as Mulder), and now they have one of the best defensive coaches in the business to teach them. If Mulder and Matthews can bring that kind of energy and presence, my concerns on defense go way, way down.
I also expect our interior defense to be tough. Poythress and Lee are both very good shot-blockers, Skal may end up being the best shot-blocker on the team, and I know that Matthews and Mulder can block them, both in the half-court, and in transition.
The defense might have to play a little less aggressive than last season though, but it doesn't seem like we'll have a Karl-Anthony Towns on the team (2 fouls for every blocked shot). All seem to have too much vertical, and are too athletic to have that kind of issue.

Biscoe can score and handle the rock. His game is similar to Kemba and Napier. Thank God Almighty, UConn did not get him. Skal is the offensive big we need. People better watch out for the CATS next year. Ulis, a healthy AP, Mulder and a FT shooting machine Marcus Lee (hopefully). GBB

Don't worry after we have one loss or close game the nancies will be back. I think this team very well could compete and do very good. You never know once you get to the tourney. Look at 2014.

Maker looks pretty good in this game.I know the rumor is we have backed off but he could really help us.
Maker is very good as I have seen him in person and would love for Cal to get involved in recruiting him harder.

We'll be a Top 10 team if Poythress is fully recovered from his knee surgery, the NCAA doesn't make Skal sit out about 10 games and if there are no major injuries.

I'm also hoping Wynyard finds a way to join mid-season to give us a little more front court depth.

Other than that, would just like to see Cal focus on 2016. We're going to need to bring in a haul similar to the 2013 class.

This reminds me of my college days.

Me -"I'm not really into Dave Matthews."
Sorority girl - "You just have to see him in person. Trust me."

The 5th annual Ballislife.com All-American game was played last night on the campus of Long Beach City College and featured Skal Labissierre and Isaiah Briscoe, among others. Briscoe added 20 points and four assists for the team. Briscoe also beat Thon Maker to win the 3pt contest held earlier that day.

I read that Adidas would make them wear the all new basketball unitard.

Which also leads me to believe that they're just going to get the gymnastics team's hand-me-downs, and draw numbers on them in red crayons.

QFT. I'm glad he won the contest but, it's a whole different thing when you're being pressured or have to shoot coming off a pick.
Still, maybe it's a part of his game he's been working on knowing he's going to be depended on next year for more than just amazing assists.
Honestly though, I hope no one was worried about our back court for next year. We need scoring from the wings and some competent interior depth. Next year's team seems to be a patchwork with plenty of unknowns. That might be a good thing. Let Virginia, UNC or ______ have all the pressure for awhile!

I'm very confident in our backcourt, and scoring from the wings. Truthfully, I'm incredibly confident in our starting 5. A little more frontcourt depth wouldn't hurt though. Even if it's just athletic players that are only effective off of lobs and putbacks.

well I'm happy people are starting to back away from the bridge

Either that, or the ones screaming doomsday have already jumped. There's nothing that leads me to believe that this team can't win a title. Great backcourts win titles, and come time for tipoff, of the past 2 recruiting classes, we'll have the top PG coming into college basketball. (Ulis was ranked 3, the 2 ahead entered the draft, and Briscoe is the top PG in this class). I also can't complain that both are incredibly crafty, both can create their own shots, and take over games, and the PG who is leading our team is arguably the best true point guard in college basketball. Briscoe on the other hand can give us somebody else that can use his court vision to get the ball moving well, can use his big body to impose his will on other guards, or use his crafty ball handling to blow by the few guards who may be bigger, and protect the ball from smaller, pesky guards (a skill the the Harrison twins didn't have really).
We should be able to score all over the floor. Ulis can shoot it very well, Briscoe can score it well, and in a number of ways. Mulder can shoot it really well, Skal can shoot it well, and Poythress can dominate the interior. One of the better offensive rebounders in college ball, and can out-athlete most PFs.
With a combo of Ulis, Briscoe, and on the wing we put Mulder, or even Matthews, we have an elite backcourt, and arguably the best in college basketball next season. Having an elite frontcourt that can rebound well, block shots, score the ball well, show a little versatility, and play perimeter defense if needed, well that's all gravy, and we happen to have the top recruit in the class coming in to help us hold it down up front.
I'm excited.

Confidence has never been an area of opportunity for Briscoe, who actually walked off the court after taking the lead after just three racks in the first round, leaving two racks entirely untouched.

I stand by my earlier comparison to Bogans and Bradley re:Briscoe's swag

Awesome

Yeah, but how did he look in warm ups?

I was going to respond using sarcasm in exchange for your apparent usage of it, but I figured I'd just rather ask you an straight up question:

Are you belittling people who have actually seen these kids play in a live format? If so, I'm a bit surprised, being that you're usually more fair than that.

I don't intend for it to be belittling at all. Even as semi-negative as you've been lately, you've been mostly fair and reasonable, whether I've agreed or not. You've been a very good poster here for years.

I just thought it was a funny callback to the thread the other day about him being a scorer, given that it juxtaposed the obvious positive, tangible result of him winning with a more intangible evaluation you mentioned based on an in-person viewing, which, full disclosure, struck me as kind of silly in the thread where you mentioned it.

I know what your point was, it's just a funny tidbit to use to question actual in-game production. Again, meant no offense by it. If it came across like a dick move, I apologize.

This reply highlights why I still consider you one of the best on this message board. Thanks for the respectful reply, man; it's a rarity around here and it's much appreciated.

while my optimism is a bit more guarded, I think we have a chance to be pretty good.
If not, some how I think life will still go on
