Is Yenser coming back?

Always thought he'd be gone once a new OC was named,..... because the O-Line underperforming was our biggest issue....

Would be very surprised if Coen retains him, but maybe they have history and Liam thinks it'll work?

The o-line is young and will be ok, if we can find a couple of tackles. I said this in another thread, but it takes about 3 years for most offensive or defensive linemen to be college ready. They have to get rid of the bad weight and increase their strength in the right places. Most high school kids will build their upper bodies, but not the lower. Plus they have to strengthen their ligaments and tendons. Looking at our roster, most are freshmen and sophomores, some redshirted. So it should improve a lot next season, as long as we have a couple of tackles and put the linemen in their most productive position.

Well yenser didn't make it at Cal and didn't make it at Kansas. Then went on to be a glorified graduate assistant at San Fran. When the OL job come open he was also bypassed to the position and then we hired him.

Go figure

That is true. For the most part, we are getting good play out of most of the O-Line. The center and guard positions are in solid shape. The glaring issue is at both tackle positions. None of the true tackles on our roster are ready to play the left tackle position. So we've been playing one of the SEC's best left guards (Horsey) at that spot out of necessity and backing him up with another good guard (Buford). Flax isn't a terrible right tackle as far as technique and skill. But the countless mental errors he makes (false starts) has KILLED us at times. And we've been backing him up with Buford too.

We've brought in a solid LT from the portal and appear to be working on a RT as well. If we can nab a couple of solid veterans to man those two spots, then we can bring along some of the younger tackles a bit more slowly and move Horsey and Buford back to guard where they belong. The net effect is that these changes should make the OL much stronger as a whole.

We've had a number of recruiting misses at the tackle spot that have hurt our depth. Guys we recruited as tackles ended up not panning out or were better suited to playing at guard. Hopefully the portal will be kind to us and allow us to get some experienced guys to man the tackle spots while we bring along the younger guys and recruit new ones.

Also, the jury is still very much out on Yenser. Maybe Scang was the real problem and his OL will perform better under Coen. But that remains to be seen. I've certainly seen nothing from Yenser either here or at any of his previous stops that makes me think "this is our guy". I thought we could have done a lot better when he was hired. If there is a bright spot with Yenser, he does at least appear to be a decent recruiter. Hopefully he pans out as a coach, otherwise next season will be another wasted season, Coen or no Coen.

Coen was instrumental in him being here in the first place . Evidently there’s something about him that Coen likes ?

Good points on this thread!

I thought Yenser was worse than Scangerello but Coen might be seeing it differently. But if Yenser sucks again…Coen will start getting heat

But the point that Coen was part of Yenser and Scangerello hires is good point. It will be an issue to keep an eye upon in 2023
