Is South Carolina legit?

I think SoCar makes the NCAAT this year - low seed, but there.
I may be one of the few, but I really like Frank Martin - not as a potential coach for US, mind you, but he's a character

Martin is a great coach. I don't know what their schedule has been but I have always thought he would be good at S.C.

I will wait until they start conference play before saying one way or other about if they are good or not. OOC schedules make teams look good. Moody's team looked good with their OOC schedule.

They have played an absolutely atrocious schedule. Undefeated going into conference play and only ranked 24 says it all.

They haven't beat much but they have won all the games they played. Most teams would have lost a game somewhere against that schedule. They will likely be in contention for a spot in the NCAA tournament this year. Lets say they go 10-8 in conference, which seems very reasonable, and they go 1-1 in the SEC tournament, then they are sitting at 24-9 on selection Sunday. No way they are getting left out IMO.

SC is TBD. If you go back and look, there have been many, many cases of power conference schools bolting out to great records OOC (against mostly crap competition), then deflating like a blown tire when they play in the conference (I know SC's state rival, Clemson, has done it a few times).

SC has given themselves a little cushion, but things could turn on them quickly. I actually hope not (except against UK), as I kind of like Martin, and it would be nice to see more SEC teams make the tourney.

Gamecocks deserve credit! They haven't played a great schedule but they've won all their games which is all that matters. Frank Martin is a damn good basketball coach and they've really turned a corner. Our game down in Columbia will be a war no doubt!

The selection committee has made it a pt to punish teams who schedule poorly. If they're near. 500 in conference play they're in trouble

They shot 63 FTs tonight!!! Memphis had 5 guys foul out.

Incredible

99 free throws in that game! N-freaking-Sane. Undoubtedly had to have been a few front ends missed so the number could easily have been more than a hundred.

Field goals were almost even (Memphis-19, SC-18), and Memphis won from behind the arc 8-4. But with South Carolina dominating the charity stripe 63 attempts to Memphis' 36 how could they lose? Amazing they won by only 10. One of the most jacked up box scores I've seen EVER.

They have a garbage OOC, but the SEC is a garbage conference. They play Missouri, Georgia, Mississippi state, Tennessee, and Alabama twice. I bet they go 13-5 in conference. Get a seven seed. Lose in the first round.

IF things work out for them, and IF they get in the tourney, I won't have them getting out of the first round on my sheet. No SEC school other than us will get that privilege again.

If they are still undefeated when we go there, might not get as many people in there as we have been.

I like Frank Martin too. As BKO said, he's a character.

Wed Dec 30 25 NR Francis Marion W, 78-56
Sat Jan 2 23 70 Memphis W, 86-76

The number right after the date of each game is South Carolina's kenpom rating, followed by the rating of the opponent. As you can see, the highest rated opponent they've played was today's game against #70 Memphis.

I think South Carolina is not a great team, but they will scrap and guard you. They will not lose due to lack of effort. And there is no question they are riding a wave right now. I'm sure they will take a loss in a road conference game pretty soon. They'll be rough to beat in Columbia, but UK is very well equipped to get it done, in my opinion.

I am a bit disturbed they shot that many FTs as we have to play them on the road this year. No team deserves 60+ FTs in a 40 min college basketball game. Feel bad for Memphis as I doubt it was that one sided in terms of correct officiating.

Did you watch the game?

They haven't played anybody of note, but most teams in recent USC history lose to teams of no consequence, so I can't make fun of it too much.

The main problem is if they would beat us, Vandy, or LSU, they would lose their next 3 in a row no matter who they play.

So #70 Memphis is the best team they've played so far and they struggled in that game and needed 60+ free throws to win at home.

I suspect the gamecocks are in for a very rude awakening come selection Sunday.

I believe they are. I've expected Martin would eventually get things going down there. This looks like the year. We'll know soon enough. It's definitely one of the road games looming out there which concern me for this year's UK team.

Struggled? Needed 60 free throws? What would have happened if they had only been fouled enough to shoot 16 free throws?

They Have more quality wins than UofL.. Hofstra, Tulsa, Clemson and Memphis are all decent teams.

Memphis came out to intimidate. There were some blatant early fouls and trash talking in the first minute - almost leading to a fight. Especially among the big men. From then on, the refs (SEC) called a super tight game. Every touch, every bump drew a foul.

Frank Martin adjusted by playing his bench & keeping the starters out of foul trouble. He also made sure his players kept it cool and business like, while the Memphis players were celebating the more blatant fouls that knocked a Carolina player to the floor.

Memphis pretty much hacked on every shot. Both teams shot around 30%. Memphis was solid from behind the arc; Carolina was abysmal. That's how Memphis kept it close. So Frank pushed the ball inside - which virtually guaranteed a foul. And eventually all the Memphis big men fouled out.

It was definitely a different game. Probably the longest regulation game I've ever seen.

I don't think USC hit home cooking from the refs. Frank figured it out, adjusted, played more zone, and used his deeper bench. Memphis stuck with their original game plan - despite it being obvious how the refs were calling the game.

Undefeated, decent win against Memphis. Could USCjr give us a run for our money for SEC champs this year?
Martin is a good and intense coach. It was only a matter of time until his team reflected his personality. They are decent but not really a threat to us in any way. I'm just glad to see them better.

I always prefer a decent SEC. Perennial also rans Auburn, Miss State, Bama and even UT with new coaches will make SEC basketball significantly better.
