Is anybody disappointed in Onyenso?

For how much time he's missed, he has played pretty well when called on.

Feeding him the ball in the Post 3 straight times is on Cal. He should NOT be the primary scoring option EVER!!! And he isn't a good enough passer to give him the ball exclusively in a tight game.

But he is SOOOO Big that he can alter shots. He needs to work on his hands and strength. But by next season, he could be a FORCE.
To be fair, we weren't exactly lighting it up from any point on the court to that point. But I get what you are saying. I think Cal was trying to get points by any means necessary then.

What is this? Bad take day? Goodness.
So you think he's been a disappointment? And my take about him being as good as I had any right to hope for is a terrible take? Or maybe you just had a reading comprehension glitch which can happen to all of us. Just for the record I did not say I thought he was a disappointment; I am very pleased with his play. I was just wondering if there was a single soul that was disappointed with him.

Hmm, I thoiught he did pretty well all things considered. That awareness to back down the defender, see the weak side defender sag off him, and hit that turnaround sky hook.. was great basketball and IQ.

He's still coming back from injury and getting his footing with the new team. He had some nice rebounds, some good defense, nice court awareness for some fast break passes. IDK, I give him a B.. Maybe B-.. ?

Ouch… Richardson

OP ugonna regret stating that opinion.
Does OP mean me? If so, no I don't think I will regret my opinion. I said he's been better than I thought and I think he will get better. Very doubtful in my mind that I'll feel I have to be ashamed of my opinion.

I think Bradshaw may've read this boards comments at the half. He was getting roasted from all including your's truly. He responded BIG TIME. He and Ugo are the perfect big man compliment to our fast paced game. They give us what we need without changing the gameplan.

Nope I’d take that every game honestly. Just the 1-2 blocks and rebounds in his time on the court is good enough usually. If we get 5-8 points out of him that’s a bonus to me.
This. Everyone thinks after Oscar that eee need a 5 that gets double doubles every night.

The main thing I would like to see differently from both Ugo and Bradshaw is attacking the rim when receiving those short corner passes…I want them to go up and try to tear the rim off every time and dare someone to get in the way a la Willie Cauley-Stein or even Thiero now.

I can acknowledge that maybe they don’t have the vertical that WCS/Thiero have, but I wish they had the mindset. Instead, they both have a tendency to go up a little timid if there appears to be anyone near the rim.

Anyone who thinks he didn't give us valuable minutes today is waaaaaaay off base

I agree that he gave good minutes today…in addition to the stats he had, there was once or twice that a Gator was driving into the lane and passed the ball back out because he was in the lane.

So…his presence is becoming the shot deterrent in the lane that it needs to be.

He has not been better than I thought was possible but he has been much better than I thought was likely.
Wow. Not in the least. I figured him as a flyer that has done some good things.
Not saying you are wrong. But I am happy as o can be.

I think you are another that needs to reread my post. I never said that I was disappointed in him; I agree with your second sentence. My post said, not in the exact words, that I was very happy with his play so far; that he has met my top expectations. It seems to me that a lot of people read a post title and make assumptions about the post without actually reading them. I'm just basing this on the first sentence since we seem to be in perfect agreement.

I think most are reading your post as seeing his play thru a "glass half empty" lens b/c of the way you worded the title of your post.

Had your post title read, "who else is pleasantly surprised with Onyenso thus far?"

and the rest of your post been worded exactly the same, I think most everyone would be agreeing with you instead of appearing to disagree with you but saying the same thing you were saying/intending to say.

I'm not, as I didn't expect much from him based on how he played, sparingly of course, last year. I've actually been pleasantly surprised by him this year so far

Considering the competition in the games he has checked in during his UK career, this was his best game yet. He put up better numbers in the North Florida & Duquesne games last year but again, have to look at the level of competition. All things considered, I like where he stands with the limited playing time. Had 8 blocks in the 1st 3 games before Florida.

I think Ugo is fine but not able to back down a player a full 6-7 inches and lighter and throwing up a baby hook from ten feet isn’t ideal

But when Ugo is in rhe game…he protects the rim in drives and post ups way better then Brasshaw/Mitchell….and this team needs D to reach its offensive potential

My question wjtb Ugo is long term….how does he fit in with Quantance, Cyril and maybe even Z if he sticks with UK next year

What did he show us last yr that would make you think he would actually be good? He needs to be a shot blocker and concentrate on that. We're fine in other areas.

The problem I have with Ugo isn't Ugo, it's repeatedly feeding him in the "post" 12 feet from the basket.

But that's on him to get better post position. His lack of lower body strength and understanding of leverage let's him get pushed out. That left hand hook was really nice, though no way I want to depend on that especially from 10-12 feet.

Could tell he really worked on rebounding of late because he was much better battling. Just so raw still

Hustles-runs floor hard
Rebounds
Blocks shots
Hands of stone
Can’t out jump a phone book
Offensively can be solid when gains confidence
Good attitude
Seems like he wants to be here

Not bad at all

Sorry! It wasn’t meant as an argument…and I had been sippin’ too!

Glad to see everyone responding positively and having the collective basketball acumen to know that he's a project player that is going to really get better. His size is on the minds of anyone we play against when he's in the game, that's for sure. His presence on the floor, alone, gives another valuable dimension to our team.

I just really want to see Big Z get out there so we can finally have look at what the entire team will be like on the floor, together.

Hellofa thought. Let's see it for real.

Feel this. I felt it was like in football where maybe you’re a passing team but you can’t like ABANDON the run.

We shot 5/20 from three and everything else was one on ones tough 2s, had to try something.

As surprising as that hook shot was to me I assume Cal has seen him do that 1,000,000 times.

A seven footer that can block shots, rebound, works hard and how about that left handed hook! Tons of potential that will just get better and better the more he plays.
