You are watching the reply from above. Pointing with the right hand and waving the left could on the field look like a fair catch indication.
It wasn’t called on the field. Literally no one thought it was a fair catch in real time and/or on the field. Matter of fact it looked less like a fair catch at the field level. I saw that view too.

They went to review to look at whether or not he stepped out of bounds and decided to nerd out and take the game out of the players hands with the fair catch nonsense. It wasn’t until they were in replay looking at something else that they found the hand signal

Understood.

That said, if it is a reviewable no call, like a targeting infraction is reviewable even if not called, then I also understand the review, even if the ultimate decision was questionable.
