Instead of expanding the playoffs

Keep it at 4, but select the teams after the bowl games. Winning your bowl game is a prerequisite for getting one of the 4 spots.

So basically you want to pretend the bowl game isn't in all but name a quarterfinal round. LOL ok.

The playoff needs to be at 12 and probably more one day. Every other sport has a playoff and pretty much every other level of football.

I am glad the playoff expanded, I just don't get the 12. The top 4 teams, the supposed best, get an even bigger edge by getting a 1st round by, why not 8 or 16? Everyone plays 1st round, sure there will be some bad games every now and then, but there will be when 5 plays 12 with the new format.

I was a fan of 8, 6 autobids and only 2 at larges.

Grumpy, I agree. It's really just as easy to make the playoffs 16 teams as it is 12. The 12 team model has 4 teams potentially playing in 3 play off games, while 8 could potentially play in 4 playoff games - so just make it 4 for everyone. One way to do it would be to eliminate the conference championship games and the current conference championship weekend becomes the first round of playoffs that could be affiliated with 8 current bowl games. The 8 winners advance to the six bowl games named as part of the playoffs now and continue the same format that is existence. It would virtually guarantee all the playoff bowl games to be sellouts as well. Those winners advance to the four bowl games on the traditional New Year's weekend and then the winners of those games could move on to two more bowl games - like the current rotation does now. The current minor bowl games could still exist - and be played to not compete with the playoff bowls. Again, not a hard thing to do in reality. Teams who don't make the playoffs still have a bowl game possibility.

The best 10 is the most you need. The 11th best team in the country doesn't have much of an argument for why they should have been included. 5 automatic. 5 at large bids.

2 best teams get byes to semifinal round
Other 8 play 3 rounds into semis.

Prefer 8 teams with 5 auto and 3 at large bids.
4 lowest teams have a play-in round
Top 2 get a bye to semis.
4 teams play in first round
4 teams in semis
2 in finals.

I think the no conference championship game is a real possibility especially with no divisions. Just take the best record as champion and the 2nd place team hopes for an at large. But the whoe reason for the conference championship game is money, are conferences willing to give that up?

I don't have the answer, I just think 12 I'd an odd number when it was just as easy to have 8 or 16.

Sort of, but it leaves a slither of hope for more teams to be selected after the bowl games. It makes more bowls more relevant.

I think the conference championships could kind of be a "first round" of sorts. I know the SEC has benefited once or twice, but i dislike it when teams that cannot win their division get to the playoffs. (O$U)

Do not need more than 4. 9 out of 10 years their are 2 teams better than everyone else and they end up playing. Look at how many blowouts have occurred in the 4 team playoff. I do think the playoffs help the interest in the Bowls because a 12 team playoff allows 11 Bowl games to be involved in playoffs.

I expect it will eventually go to 16, but I think the CFP liked 12 to start at least in part because that format gave them 4 first round games instead of 8 to schedule on TV. The advantage there is that you can play one game on Friday night and 3 more on Saturday and not have any of them overlap. That gives the CFP maximum TV revenue per game to start out with, while they see how well the expansion is received.

And I expect it will be received very well, so then 16 will be the next step.

The only way to keep these kids in these games is to not make them meaningless. IE, expand the playoff.

I'm for 16. Potential for upsets and fun. One and done makes for the NCAA tourney fun.

I’m for not waiting another year Go to 12. It’s best shot we will have. 10-2 sec team likely gets in

How many times has a 3 or 4 seed won? UGA did, OSU has and I believe Bama has. But you are right 1 probably has half or more.

I don't think the current plan uses that many bowl games. As I understand it, the first 4 playoff games (with the 8 at-large teams) will be played on-campus. More interest and less travelling for the fans.

Sort of right. The teams that make the playoffs are 6 at large teams and the 6 highest rated conference champions. The 4 highest rated champions get seeds 1-4 and the first round byes.

Seeds 5-12 include the two lowest rated champions and the six at large teams. Out of that group of 8 teams, the highest rated four teams are seeds 5-8 and get to host a first round home playoff game.

No Automatic bids ! That is why we had to sit through those shitty games this year ! BEST teams in the Playoffs period !

You are probably right, it makes sense.

I did not mention seeds because teams can be misseeded. Several od those games were blowouts also. Of the 4 teams chosen most of the time the 2 best teams meet

12 is a good number.

Absolutely, giving the top teams byes makes sense.

Especially given that almost all will play in conference championship games.

You see the impact when a team misses its conference championship game and still makes the playoff. They get to rest and prepare while the top team is often slugging it out on the field one week after Thanksgiving.

And no, I don’t want to eliminate the conference title games. They are actually one of the best things about college football (much better than the majority of bowl games).

But, get rid of divisions so the top 2 teams in each conference play year in and year out.

Then, give the top 4 teams a well-deserved bye.
