In the last 50 years, have we ever dealt with both PG’s being injured? Prolly best to judge Pope…

On what we were doing with our two ball handlers or at least one of them healthy.

The guy is going to crush it at UK. This is a rare occurrence that won’t happen again in our lifetime.
I think Suttons last team was in a similar situation, Sean Sutton was the only true PG and I think he was a freshman.

Still no excuse for not doing as well as you can with what you have.

They did that for 10 minutes of the game last night.

Is 40 minutes too much to ask?

This is the logical take from fans that aren't insane and have unrealistic expectations. First year, roster on the fly, injuries. It will be fine. Dude is gonna do great things here. All the chicken littles need to take a few bong rips and relax.

Right now, considering our health, would you rather have DJ Wagner or Travis Perry stepping in to run the PG spot? And JR isn’t a true PG either.
Perry isn’t a PG, either. He did not play PG in high school. He was the off-guard … a shooting guard.

The point of the question to that poster is, they said Arkansas didn't have a PG either. As to say, it 'evened out'. My counter was, Wagner stepping in to run PG in a big game was far more ideal than anything we had. So, it's not really even, and not a good argument.

People are right when they say Arkansas lost their point guard and they are actually playing better; what you are not saying is how is that possible?
Might be the player running the offense is in his second year with the same coach, playing with 2 other players he knows surrounded by SEC players who have played in the SEC and understand the difficulty of playing in this league. Then you factor in how strong the SEC is this year, you have no games where you can make the adjustments needed when you lose a player to an injury.
When I see our freshmen go in, I think about the term, "baptism by fire" for them.

The team Coach Pope put together had never played one single minute together, no one. You tell me who has ever done something like this before? SMU after their death penalty years?
As a whole, this team is good, has weaknesses but many of them can be covered up with their strengths in other areas. To lose one player is tough, to lose three is a season killer. Carr is back but it is clearly obvious he is not 100%.
When you have to have a 7ft center handle the ball in the open court, you know your team is trying to make adjustments.

Bottom, line, this team had 0 room for error; as a whole, they are difficult to guard. Butler being out has thrown everyone out of their comfort zone; this after Coach Pope has worked so hard on getting each player to know each other, understand each others game, how to play together and know without thinking where their teammate will be at for a pass and then to have everyone of them move into other roles this late in the season is not easy especially in a league like the SEC.

I see now why others think us UK fans are spoiled. These injuries suck and suck big time.
I read posters who think Kerr being out is not that big a deal and wonder why they feel this way. Take Ole Miss; look how they played in your face defense and think how annoying that would be to have to play with someone constantly up in your face the whole game.
Kerr brought that kind of mentally into the game. Energy and hustle off the bench is huge for a coach to have.

6 months ago, UK had not a single player on its roster or a coach and today we bitch after the excitement a new coach and set of players have given us all due to the team being dealt with these types of injuries.

People say Pope is too soft but complain about a guy like Hurley, Bob Knight, Barnes, Beard being a jerk. I find it a little refreshing to have someone coach UK that is not a jerk, talks to fans with respect, and represents UK like it should be. Pope is a modern version of Tubby when it comes to class. Tubby liked his ball line defense and scores in the 50's where as Pope wants to score one more point then the other team no matter the score. But come the end of the game, both coaches had class.

Enjoy the ride and STFU if you don't like it.

That’s true but they also have Cal who’s the best coach in the history of the game. He’s worth 10 points just because he’s a HOF coach.

I honestly don't get it. I mean, I DO...it is never fun to lose and obviously that can be frustrating. People just need to step a month back and realize that this team was put together in a month and at the time EVERYONE had low expectations based on the roster. Then, when healthy, they vastly overachieved. I am going to do my best to celebrate that. Pope did the best he could with the roster but no one (especially in the modern NIL era) has 3 good point guards on the roster.

We all went in to this season expecting nothing and now people are having fits because it looks like only the first half of the season will be exceptional and the rest will be...exactly as anticipated.

I think if you ranked players on the roster this spring you’d get:
1. Robinson
2. Carr- missed time just now starting to look better
3. Amari
4. Butler- interchangeable with Amari maybe as our projected 3rd/4th best player. Missed time
5. Oweh
6. Garrison
7. Brea
8. Kriisa- missed tons of time(could’ve been viewed by some higher)
9. Chandler- former top 40 recruit like 21 years old, think people expected it to take time but to be a contributor
10. Almonor- dude was transferring from FDU to Siena before our offer
11. Perry
12. Noah

Due to injury/not being a contributor, Pope has had to deal without his second, fourth, eighth, and ninth ranked players on his roster from the preseason with multiple guys absent at the same position.

Defense should still be better but that team was pretty solid when healthy.

Not a list of future all star players…. Think about it, what superstar players were available and were willing to come to a program with zero returning players, a new coach and offense and a group of players that are hanging on to their dreams of playing basketball as long as possible as graduate students.

DJ Wagner isn’t a true PG. Also, Perry isn’t even playing that much. Robinson has been the primary ball handler.
Wagner is 100% a PG. He was listed as a PG coming out of high school and played point here all last year until the very end when Sheppard started getting more minutes at the 1. The only reason DJ and Fland are on the same team is because Cal expected DJ to be one and done like all his other PGs.

I want to go to the College Basketball subreddit, and just do a friendly challenge to see which D1 programs (more specifically, Power programs) have had more injuries than us.

As it stands right now, I can't think of one school this year that has more impactful injuries than us losing Butler, Kerr and Carr.. but granted, I don't know every roster that well.

What I DO know, because it's a regional conference for me, is that there are times when MAAC schools go entire seasons without losing anyone for more than a game or two (at least from their top7 or so players). And that seems to be something Kentucky has only had maybe a handful of times in the last 15 years. Nerlens, Poythress, WCS, TClarke, Grady, Ty, Sharpe, our 3 bigs last year, Kerr, Butler, Carr.. and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. All those guys were out for considerable amount of time, or were playing so injured that they weren't even effective.

"But Arkansas lost their PG" is missing the point so badly.

We lost our starting PG. We lost our backup PG. We've had to turn to Amari Williams, Travis Perry, and Collin Chandler.

Arkansas lost thier backup PG. They did not lose another guard. They turned to DJ Wagner at PG.

"But DJ's not a true PG!!!!"

Who cares? DJ started at PG quite a bit for Calipari just last year. They have a guy with starting PG experience under their head coach. Our best point guard that's actually healthy was playing for Lyon county last year.

The two situations aren't at all comparable. And coninuing to act like they are just shows us all that you don't know ball.

Also, Perry is not a true PG anymore than Wagner is a true PG.

Last night's loss is inexcusable, even without Butler the defense has to be better. I don't think Butler would've made a huge difference last night either.

Big difference. Wagner is a legit P5 starting-quality Guard. Perry could be that some day, maybe, but he ain't that now!!! Right now it's questionable if he is a P5 backup-quality Guard. I think he will be that someday, but he is that now, IDK.
