Im ALL IN on Ashton Hagans & THIS TEAM

Hagans is what he is. He isn’t a top flight college player like we hoped, but he is necessary for the team. Without him, we only have two players who can dribble the ball so he needs to play.

Look. I like Hagans. I’m behind him and the team. But he’s got to be more consistent. He can’t make a great defensive play and then drive into three people. Now if that’s what Cal is teaching him to do, I have a problem with Cal. That doesn’t work anymore. Teams are packing it in. And refs sure aren’t going to give us anything unless a dogpile clears and we have on of our guys down with a knife in their backs. Maybe not even then.

Quickley tonight was the one being vocal and trying to energize the team. As it stands right now, Quickley is by far a better leader than Hagans. I’m sorry. That’s just the way it stands right now.

Hagans needs to man up. Admit he’s playing like dog crap at times and fix his game. A PG’s job is to find points. Whether that be through assists, TOs or sometimes creating them himself. Right now Hagans is doing too much at QB. He’s running too much instead of trying to use his teammates to create a play. NBA scouts won’t care if he’s not getting 25+ a game. They will care if his assists are garbage. They’ll also care if he is a TO machine because he’s trying to force too much.

Right now Hagans needs to take a day off to clear his head. His body is fine. His mind I’m starting to worry about. And after the mind falls, the spirit is not far behind.

Hey look, we got us little keyboard cowboy who cant handle reality so he resorts to childish name calling. Nice.
You went on a rant about how because your son is in the army at age 20 that means that Ashton Hagans needs to get tough.

I'm thinking that if 20 year olds can bravely serve our country, angry basketball fans can not demand 20 year olds play better and not insult them personally.

Anyone lobbying for Ashton to be benched or to leave the team is an idiot, plain and simple.

There's no question we need him to reach our potential.

Cal has hinted (with words and actions) lately that he may move Ashton off the ball on offense. I'll be the first to say, Maxey has come a long way as a playmaker. This could work. But ultimately, Cal knows best.

Player bashing needs to stop. No question Ashton needs to get out of the negative head space he is in currently, but some of the stuff I have been reading on here and on social media is just sick.

Couldn’t get through OP’s whole diatribe.

Cal’s refusal to give more of Hagan’s minutes away is why this team is going nowhere. Maxey looks great at lead guard. Juzang helps with spacing and is hitting more open shots. Hagans is detrimental to our offense.

Be stoked OP. Get excited. Your choice bro. But our coach isn’t making adjustments and he’s fielded another non-contender. Winning the SEC is like a team winning the church league in that nobody is amazed or the least bit interested in the feat.

This is a good post. Critiques Hagans play correctly...and gives a remedy for him to just slow down and get his head right. This is good support and I'm fine with this as you're being supportive.

I'm talking about claiming he is playing bad because he's selfish and hurting the team because Nick and Quickley are playing better. There were several players not playing well early on...but Ashton was the one keeping us in games until the other caught up...but they weren't treated with the same level of hate.

When EJ or Nick slide off...they're critiqued but not as harsh. There's not a level of hate for others as there is Ashton. Yes he's played bad...but this forum acts like he's playing bad on purpose and it's his choice he's playing bad. He's hit a rough spot...and when players hit a down spot they need our support.

I don't care if Hagans is benched or kicked off the team if Cal thinks its so..I didn't say anything about his play needing to be defended right now. I just said he's playing bad and maybe some support will get him through this rough time.

I'm just against our own fans attacking our player personally who is going through a tough time...I know I know...he needs to be tough and handle 20k plus and thousands more online calling him selfish and reminding him he played bad.

I support Ashton...from the bench or in the game. Him playing at his best is better for our Cats. He's not playing bad on purpose. There's a reason why Cal knows how to get the most out of his guys...

It's March. It's fine to critique a player, but stop insulting our guys

These guys have had an up and down year and they need our support NOW. hey had a bad game tonight...they lost to Evansville...ok fine. They clinched an SEC title with 1 week to go in the season. They're on the 2/3 seed line. We have the chance to make a run for a title.

Ashton Hagans is a KID. All of you can whine and moan about his "struggles", but most of you couldn't even get a walk-on spot at Asbury College....leave him alone. He plays his heart out every night and you can't question his heart. He chose to come back and play here...wasn't a kid that just wanted to jump to the NBA after a year...

He's hit a rough spot...but it's our job to get him through this spot. Because this forum and whiny babies on here don't have a good track record when putting down OUR GUYS

-You all just whined about Darius Miller being "soft" and never being able to step up in big moments...

-Terrence Jones was overrated and costing our team....yeah how'd that turn out?

-Poythress was soft too...really was never going to do anything big for us....

-The Harrison's were just looking for one year and to get out...they were just selfish and couldn't take our team anywhere?

-DeAndre Liggins was a team cancer....why was he even still on the roster?

-The 2014 team was the biggest waste of talent in history? How could they lose to a SC team with a losing record. Biggest bust recruiting class ever....

Hagans has hit a rough patch, but he will be fine and I trust Cal to get him through it....whiny babies can cry about those college kids not giving the effort that they see through their tv screens...but I'll be right here when Ashton turns it around!

Wiltjer was soft and ran off the first change he got.
Harrow was an actual cancer.
Quade Green leaving made our team way better.
Vanderbilt played like...3 games for us?

There are actually a lot of instances that go against your point.

It was just a rough patch. And I get it.

But in the Auburn game, he started forcing the offense. He was determined to get his. He was absolutely playing selfishly. It's one game though, he'll do better.

Then last night he refuses to go in and gets into it with his teammates and coaches?

It's time to be concerned.

Your starting PG, like a QB in football, has more responsibilities and has to be held to a higher standard. It might be fair but it’s a fact and just the way it is. That’s not going to change. You either embrace it or crumble.

But that’s the thing: he’s not at all getting the most out of Hagans. Dude has regressed two seasons in a row. Of course we all want the best version of Hagans. But Cal hasn’t shown the ability to produce that version in back to back years. There’s absolutely no reason to think he’s suddenly going to appear in March. To think so is to absolutely ignore basic logic.

Blame Cal for it...I will agree to that point because Cal is a grown man paid millions. This is his team and I agree.

But I saw what he did with the Harrison's in March. I saw him turn Liggins/Miller into an unstoppable force that gave 2011 the spark to the Final Four. The reason I can think it may appear is because March is different. You play harder and are more focused...it happens every year.

Maybe last night was what Ashton needed...to hit rock bottom and finally acknowledge the issues with his play and turn it around for the tournament.

Ashton had a chance to quit last year...he came back and embraced the challenge of year 2.

Other than last night, when has their been an instance of Ashton being a problem child? Being a bad teammate? Not giving effort? Yes he's played bad...but people are using last night as a reason to just say he's been a cancer all year...instead of just saying he's playing bad.

Wiltjer won a title...and saw Dakari Johnson, Julius Randle, Poythress, Willie, and MArcus Lee all on the team his Junior year. Left...improved. Had a good run at Gonzaga and played a bit in the NBA.

Harrow never proved he could play on the level of Ashton. Had family issues...etc. etc.

Vanderbilt early on wasn't going to play, but he had a legit injury in March that went into his first NBA season that kept him off the court. When he was healthy he was a monster.

We were better when Quade left...because??? ASHTON HAGANS became the full time point guard!

Not your best moment, Hoptown.

1. He has had a bunch of bad games and his attitude was awful
2. Ashton Hagans is going to be 21 in a few months; he is an adult. I was already starting a career at that age, as was many of us. Some of us even had children by that age. Maturity-wise, he might still be a kid, but that's his problem if so.
3. Whether or not we are able to get a spot on Asbury's team is irrelevant; most of us are not 6'3", nor did we win the genetic lottery like him
4. He didn't jump to the NBA because he couldn't. Plays his heart out? Sure, for himself.
5. It's not our job to get him through this rough spot; it's Cal's job. If he cares about what we are saying on this board, or any other platform, he has bigger problems.
6. Darius Miller WAS soft until his senior year
7. Terrance Jones was a selfish MF'er until he figured it out
8. Poythress was soft; this wasn't the best example
9. Harrisons were not NBA ready after one year either.
10. Liggins was a team cancer until 2011
11. The 2014 was a big bust until the tournament. Would the narrative have been different if VanVleet hits that three for Wichita?

We all want Hagans to do well; why wouldn't we? But his attitude and his play has been awful. Truth is, he does not want to be here; he wants to be in the NBA. With his lack of shooting, decision making skills, fundamentals, and even worse, his attitude, he won't get drafted without much improvement (most likely mid to late second round). I know the truth is hard for people who lead with their emotions as opposed to logic. I am going to continue to be a Kentucky fan, and will support them, but I will call things out (I really haven't much). I'm not going to be a blind sheep/Sunshine pumper.

I’m just saying. Every night is a bit of a stretch when I watch him jog back on turnovers and lay on the ground to pout and then run back. Hagans has great plays defensively sometimes. But those plays happen sparingly this year.
Um, all of our players do that. Especially Maxey.

Anyone who doesn't see the seriousness of the Cal Hagans deal is living in a alternate reality.

It's no coincidence that the moment the yelling match happened we had our largest lead, only to go quickly down him from that point. Cal put him in the game after this incident and did not take him back out the rest of the game.

Pumpers have been saying all year, "wait till March" "Cal always has the team ready in March". Guess what? It's March and the incident that happened last night that lead to a early season style loss is unacceptable.

What? Is Hagans a relative of yours? You sure act like it.
