I think Briscoe will be the SEC frshman of the year.

He has a smooth game, but I think Labissiere will be SEC freshman of the year, SEC player of the year, and potentially the Wooden award winner. High expectations for that kid. Uber talent.

IIRC you can't be both freshman of the year and player of the year. Skal for POY, Briscoe for FOY

It's gonna be hard to beat Ben Simmons and Newman, since neither guy will be expected to sacrifice much or have another talented freshman to split the spotlight with.

Some of the best Freshmen in the nation are going to be playing in the SEC this season.

Look at the likely All-Freshmen Team:

G Briscoe- UK
G Newman- MSU
G Blakeney- LSU
F Simmons- LSU
F Labissiere- UK

If we add Murray, put him place of Blakeney, IMHO.

A&M also has some good players coming in and Dozier could be a stud for South Carolina.

I do think Simmons will flourish next year but I fully expect Malik Newman to struggle all season. He has a serious lack of talent around him. Newman has never shown an ability to make his teammates better but will most likely handle PG duties. I actually see Newman staying at Miss St. for more than a year.

Newman might play out like josh Shelby. Like cal said, if you get double teamed and end up staying four years...sorry.

I'm not expecting huge things from Newman next season. He's going to get a fair share of points and such, but he's going to lose a lot of games.
Impossible to ignore the sheer number of scouts, out of the NBA, mock draft sites, and college recruiting sites who compare Labissiere's game to Anthony Davis. Some minor differences size-wise (AD was 6'10 with a 7'5 wingspan, Skal Lab is 7'0 with a 7'2 wingspan, but both were/are 220# at the same point). Both are freak athletes, both have guard skills, both shoot it well, both have a pretty tall standing reach (9'0 for AD, 9'0.5 for Skal).

After watching Skal on the all-star circuit, I felt like he would definitely be special. A fair margin of his plays made were in transition (he exhibited his very good transition offense in the Hoop Summit, which probably tempts Calipari to be a fast paced team like he mentioned previously.

(9-15 fg) 21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 blocks in 27 minutes in the Hoop Summit game.

(8/11 fg) 16 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 2 fouls in the BallisLife All-American game.

(5-10 fg) 11 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 2 blocks in 19 minutes at the Jordan Brand Classic.

There are also a lot of skills that make me feel like Skal could contend for the Wooden award.
- Excellent jumpshot with a nearly unblockable release point
- Terrific perimeter defensive footwork/ability to close-out very well
- Very good timing on his blocks/natural shot-blocker
- Ability to handle the ball
- Probably has the most diverse post offensive skill set of any player at UK under Calipari coming in
- Remarkable body control
- WCS-type lateral quickness
- Very good second jump (with his length and athleticism, offensive rebounding off of his own missed shots comes with relative ease)

Pair that with Cal having not one, but two similar players (Anthony Davis, and Marcus Camby), I feel like Cal knows what he needs to do to win a title with a player like Skal on UK's team this season. I think the added pressure of getting Skal to be the top pick in the draft (much like Cal faced this past season with KAT) will not be there. Cal had to make KAT play in a way that was uncomfortable to him to get him to the #1 draft pick status. Skal is already there (much like Davis was), and he just needs to let Skal go out there and display his full skill-set, because Skal doesn't have to answer any of the questions that KAT did on the court, for the NBA scouts.

Just my opinion. I love this kid game.
Not with Ben Simmons at LSU , I wish my Kentucky brothers would actually put a little thought into these kinds of quotes.

Murray over Blakeney......................not hardly.

You may be right about Murray vs. Blakeney.

This is my reasoning, though: Better coaching for Murray than Blakeney. Cal is a much better and more seasoned coach and will make Murray better by the end of the season. We know what Cal does with Freshmen and Jones is no where near as good at cultivating talent, especially in a short amount of time.

Blakeney is going to be pretty good and should be their second best player. He'll have to share shots and minutes on the perimeter with Hornsby and Quarterman, two seasoned veterans, though.

I like Briscoe's attitude. Both he and Ulis have an edge to their game that will serve this team well next March.

I think Ulis and Briscoe are complementary players. Ulis is a steadier, calmer player. Briscoe is more dynamic and thus more volatile. I think they should work well together.
