I'm not expecting huge things from Newman next season. He's going to get a fair share of points and such, but he's going to lose a lot of games.
Impossible to ignore the sheer number of scouts, out of the NBA, mock draft sites, and college recruiting sites who compare Labissiere's game to Anthony Davis. Some minor differences size-wise (AD was 6'10 with a 7'5 wingspan, Skal Lab is 7'0 with a 7'2 wingspan, but both were/are 220# at the same point). Both are freak athletes, both have guard skills, both shoot it well, both have a pretty tall standing reach (9'0 for AD, 9'0.5 for Skal).
After watching Skal on the all-star circuit, I felt like he would definitely be special. A fair margin of his plays made were in transition (he exhibited his very good transition offense in the Hoop Summit, which probably tempts Calipari to be a fast paced team like he mentioned previously.
(9-15 fg) 21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 blocks in 27 minutes in the Hoop Summit game.
(8/11 fg) 16 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 2 fouls in the BallisLife All-American game.
(5-10 fg) 11 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 2 blocks in 19 minutes at the Jordan Brand Classic.
There are also a lot of skills that make me feel like Skal could contend for the Wooden award.
- Excellent jumpshot with a nearly unblockable release point
- Terrific perimeter defensive footwork/ability to close-out very well
- Very good timing on his blocks/natural shot-blocker
- Ability to handle the ball
- Probably has the most diverse post offensive skill set of any player at UK under Calipari coming in
- Remarkable body control
- WCS-type lateral quickness
- Very good second jump (with his length and athleticism, offensive rebounding off of his own missed shots comes with relative ease)
Pair that with Cal having not one, but two similar players (Anthony Davis, and Marcus Camby), I feel like Cal knows what he needs to do to win a title with a player like Skal on UK's team this season. I think the added pressure of getting Skal to be the top pick in the draft (much like Cal faced this past season with KAT) will not be there. Cal had to make KAT play in a way that was uncomfortable to him to get him to the #1 draft pick status. Skal is already there (much like Davis was), and he just needs to let Skal go out there and display his full skill-set, because Skal doesn't have to answer any of the questions that KAT did on the court, for the NBA scouts.
