I saw willie mays play

Neat story as relayed to me by my coworker. Coworker is in his mid sixties. His dad played baseball at the AAA level and was about to be called up to the Mets in 1949 before he suffered a career ending injury when another player cleated his leg causing severe damage. He was replaced on the roster by none other than Willie Mays. The guy who cleated his Dad quit baseball after the incident over how devastated he was to end another players career. He said if there was such a thing as a DH back then his dad might have been able to keep playing but there was no way he had the mobility to play a position anymore.

A Mays story for you. They are playing the Cardinals and Bob Gibson is pitching. Bob is super serious and Willie is a fun loving talkative guy. Gibson is taking BP before the game. Willie comes up behind the screen and wants to chat. Bob tells Willie to shut up and leave him alone. Willie continues to jabber. Game time, first inning and Willie comes up to hit. Bob's first pitch breaks one of Willie's ribs.
