Hey folks, it's a crapshoot and a plea for help, I don't have the necessary contacts. My soon-to-be-fiance (same girl talked to you guys about ten months ago--i'm going to ask her to marry me), is applying for residency match programs. One of those places is at UK. Since much of this out of my control, I can only hope she matches to place near me (norcal at the moment), or I can try to find a job where she matches.

With that said, I want to apply for faculty positions at UK in applied physics, electrical engineering, or bioengineering. Would you guys be able to point me to the right people I need to talk to? Happy to provide letters of rec, cv, etc if needed. Thank you very much for any help.

This residency match process really screws up family life. I'm almost tempted to buy compute from AWS and break the stupid algorithm.

Check with the human resources department where your fiancée gets her match. Some places will help a trailing spouse find work in the area. Otherwise, for UK, I would checkout their jobs board on their website. Might want to think about other employers in the area too. It's been 20+ years since I lived in Lexington, but there were some places around that used electircal engineers (IBM/Lexmark).

Residencies where I work start July 1.

thank you! this is super useful. yeah, i can check with the HR department and see if that can help. my dad worked at the IBM before it Lexmarked, but I was under the assumption it's been pretty much downsized. Do you know if the hospitals consider the fact that other spouses may not be mobile when choosing applicants?

I'm not sure that a hospital would consider the spouse of a resident in making their choice. Once she has her residency complete and is looking to be a staff doc somewhere, that is when they will really help - if they want her. A residency is just considered to be another part of training.

You might check out other small colleges in the area that may need instructors. I'm sure with your background you could teach some undergrad courses. Also the big sites like Monster or Indeed.

Do you have kids? If not, you might consider getting temp work. My brother is an environmental engineer and worked some temp assignmets for a while. He would travel for a month or so at a time. A good way to check out other areas. It would suck to be away for a long period of time, but it will all be over in 4-5 years.

QFT. Friend of mine started doing the environmental engineer gig with temp assignments and has been doing really well with it.

Thanks for all the help guys. Yeah I'm certain I can teach most classes in physics, math, and EE. This match process is a bit scary since two bodies have to move to an unknown location. No kids, so at least this should be a bit easier (but no less life changing). Will they help us as a staff doc? They help the spouses with placement?
