I looked at his box score and wondered if he was deported prior to the game last night.
Most headlines I've seen for the last three months seem like they should be from the Onion because it's all been so damn stupid. Reality has become more outrageous than satire.

This will break down into a political discussion very quickly, and maybe you wanted it to, but some things are bigger than college sports -- unfortunate for the young man because he's probably a very decent kid (i dunno).
I mean this will just become a political shitshow, but not sure what OP is saying. We have laws, they should be enforced, and we shouldn't let literally everyone in the country. So that means some will be left out, and maybe that sucks and is unfair, but what is the alternative. Are you suggesting that because a kid goes to Duke and is good at throwing an orange ball through a hoop that he should get special treatment? With all that said, it would suck for the kid. But there are all kinds of shitty situations in the world.
For context, South Sudan is currently is still in a civil war with a transitional government making that kind of hard to do.

The proposed plan is to revoke those visas, regardless of how “completely legal and valid” they currently are. Not because those visa holders did anything wrong, but instead simply because they happened to be born in South Sudan.
I try to avoid getting too political here, but the policy as announced makes no sense. We’re supposedly sanctioning the government of South Sudan for not processing people getting sent back there quickly enough…. by revoking all the visas of people who are currently here completely legally and sending them back to South Sudan? That’s nonsensical as a policy, and is in fact unfair to people like Maluach who were here legally and living productive lives.
Yeah I mistakenly assumed there would be some carve outs but re-read. I’ll refrain from any other comments except to say I hope it works out for him I’m sure he’s a good kid.

There are 133 people from South Sudan in the US currently on temporary protective status due to the civil war in South Sudan. 133. That's it. The rest of the people here are on a valid visa and contributing to US society in some way. This is a net negative for the US if you're trying to attract people who contribute to and make the country better. South Sudanese immigrants are quite well educated, and have college degrees at about the same rate as US born citizens.

Why would you be sick of it? This is a legitimate basketball related question. How might this affect the ability for any university to recruit overseas talent? No matter where we are politically, I would hope we would keep our eye on the ball.

What if this was a young man from another country on our team? Would you be alright with the federal government sending him home, not because he did something wrong, but because his government did something that the current administration (left, right, whatever) did not like? He was born in what is now South Sudan, but he has lived in Uganda for most of his life. Even though he plays for the South Sudanese NT, his citizenship status as a refugee formerly living in Uganda is murky. I have only seen assumptions about his status and no official comment has been provided by anybody who would know.
Regardless, this action by the State Department isn't getting people immediately deported just for walking the street and then dropped into a warzone. South Sudan is not exactly war-torn again just yet, but it is heading that way.
Never been to South Sudan, but I have spent time in Uganda, and either way, I would much rather be in Durham than either other choice. I would hope that his only worry right now is getting caught up on classwork and perhaps if he should enter the portal.

Well when you went to both schools (undergrad and law), and your family is from central Ohio, and you grew up in Kentucky...it comes with the territory.
I grew up watching Buckeye football because of my family, and then fell in love with UK basketball living in the state. So although I follow all sports (especially at UK), I cheer for UK in basketball when they play OSU, and vice versa in football. But there would be an exception probably if UK somehow met OSU in the football playoffs and I thought UK had a genuine chance of winning the title. The same doesn't apply in basketball -- it would be UK all the way.
There's plenty of great pickup basketball leagues in Africa. Jimmy Dolan is a better end game coach than Scheyer, anyway. He'll be fine!
